Nothing, other than shooting the bow, is more relaxing than reading or looking at photos. So, let's show some photos/pictures of your own doing of equipment and clothing, etc., you use during the year. We see plenty of dead animals so lets make this just a bit different.

Most photos tell a story, or have the potential to do that, depending on the imagination of the one looking. I'll start.

From: George D. Stout Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 13-Feb-19

The bow is relatively new, an Osage selfbow from Brad Smith, Santa Fe, NM. Neet shooting glove is about six years old. The arrow with the old Ace broadhead is from the 50's and still in great shootable shape but has newer feathers. The old file and piece of whetstone is from my father-in-laws old shop and probably 1950's or even earlier. Knife and sheath were made by Knifeguy, Lance Grimsby.

My 1954 quadruplets- Kodiak II, 2- 60", (38#@28" and 46#@28") 1- 64", 42@#28" and the KING of all my Kodiaks, the 68", 49#@28" K II I just got from Tom Baldwin! Shoots like a dream (good dream, not a nightmre).

But the best of the four is still unquestionably the 46# -60" one that was repaired and improved by our own Yorktown, Rick Rapp. smoother, faster, quieter by far than any others or before I sent it to him.

Was at the Black Rhino Private Lodge in the Pilanesberg National Forest private reserve in South Africa last week and had a lion pass within bow shooting distance to the fence.

Our guide was lucky enough to get us on The BigFive in less than 30 hours (Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Black Rhino, and Water Buffalo), plus we saw some wild dogs (very rare) and hippos too.

Like said above, saw several types of wilderbeasts, lots of impalas, a leopard dragging fresh kill over a large rock, a huge single bull elephant (probably old but strong enough to survive) and many wild animals and elepahnts, some of which were just outside the prvate lodege's slanted electric fence. This was a guided trip with a private lodge, cabins, guide, and chef, for two days (last Friday and Saturday morning). Was working on a sod farm and they paid for the trip and lodge etc.

Most animals except a few of the "Big Five" we saw, were within bow shooting distance and many in the road. Very lucky to even see the leopard, but especially lucky to have the wild dogs next to the lodge, which are rarely ever seen.

The wild dogs, next to the water buffalo, are savage killers who don't like anybody or living thing. They are brutal killers who run down anything, including lions and other large predators (man too) with great endurance and eat them alive. Never thought wild dogs were so dangerous or rare, so glad we saw them from just outside the lodge fence.

Oh, above is a wilderbeast roadblock.

Had a hair raising encounter with this yote Sat. This is the pack leader that has been around our area for several years. Had a couple run ins with him before. He's older now and holder. Would not leave, just kelt barking at me and Trapper. He even approached in our direction. Had to 'heal' Trap so he would not get in a fight with it. I don't know where the rest of the pack was. He barked (not a yipping, an actual barking) and stayed just out of bow range for over 20 min.

Had to keep Trap next to me. No matter how much I yelled and threw stuff at him he would not leave. I started getting concerned knowing two rabid animals have been confirmed within ten miles of home this past week: A skunk that bit a dog in Vernon and fox that bit two people in New Hartford.

From: TrapperKayak
Date: 03-Mar-19

TrapperKayak's embedded Photo

I found out why a little while later. I didnt have a weapon with me so or else he would be on a stretcher right now. I can't have him leading his family unit around our place every night like he has been all winter, barking and yipping out back. Trap is cautious when he goes out at night but I am not taking any more chances. This week Im going after him. Would have been a quick shot with the .22 mag Sat. if I'd had it.

From: TrapperKayak

Except for his skinny tail I think he'd make a nice tanned pelt. He is getting old, but is well fed and has a pack to carry on where he leaves off. I'm gonna guess he goes 60# with that full belly. Its time he goes, he is way too bold.

Went to check out the annual Steelhead run on the Willoughby River in NE VT on Saturday. A few guys were working the approach to the Willoughby Falls at Orleans.

Series of pictures showing the progression up the falls the Steelhead have to clear to get to the spawning grounds in small tributaries about 3 miles further upstream. The fish have about a 10 mile journey to the falls from Lake Memphremagog a 30 mile long lake that is partly in VT with and most of it in Quebec.

Water level is unusually high this year from the excessive snowfall so the Steelhead can get up the falls without having to jump - no show so far anyway.

Unlike Salmon these Steelhead will return to the lake after spawning giving anglers another shot at them. The young trout will spend 2-3 years in the river before heading to the lake and returning to take on the falls when mature. It is amazing how Mother Nature can program these fish to repeat this run year after year.

An old lion in bow range just outside our lodge electric fence last year on a safari in South Africa. Had a great guide and saw the Big Five in less than 2 1//2 days. Saw hippos, white rhinos (in addition to a black), wild dogs up close, which are extremely rare to observe, and lots of other big dangerous critters.

Here's the wild dogs from that trip. Next to a black buffalo, think they would be the critters to stay away from. They run down their pray, which can be any animal, any size, incljuding humans, 'till they tire out, and eat'um up and drink'um dry right then and there.

Fun. Here’s one of mine I don’t think I’ve ever posted before….

I carved this from a bit of antler; it’s resting up against a .58 cal conical that my brother put through the shoulder, spine and off shoulder of a cow Elk at about 18 yards.. about 3 minutes after a 7X8 had stood in that very spot. A cow tag for ML is both a blessing AND a curse some days….

Pheasant flew into our blind in an effort to escape a falcon. We were happy to release it through a small window…. Neither of the men in the photo knew that the bird had less than ten seconds to live. The falcon smashed the pheasant the instant it was released! We were left with feathers floating around the blind.
