Hey gang, I know there has no doubt been plenty of conversation about crowning paints but I did a quick search and didn't find what I was looking for. My question: I have a young guy wanting to learn how to make arrows and we're starting tomorrow so I have to get some paint now. I have always used Bohning products but need to find an alternative. I went to Ace Hardware and found a Hi-Gloss Enamel. Will it be fairly fast drying and compatible with Fletch-Tite Platinum? I saw a post not long ago where some folks don't like the Platinum, but that aside, should they be compatible? Thanks!

Paint them first then put your finish on and you should be fine with the glue because it's on the finish and not the paint.

I generally just do my crown paint and then use a stain wax on the lower part of the shaft. I don't dip the whole arrow in a finish. So I typically glue to the Bohning paint.

Did you get oil based or waterbased paint? I know the glue should stick to waterbased as Bohning is offering waterbased paints these days. Never had luck with that glue on oil based even before Bohning changed to the Platinum glue.

I've had good luck with Rustoleam Fusion for plastic. Hold up really well on carbon. Then seal (Wipe on Poly), then fletch.

What would be a “stain-wax”?

I use Rustoleum spray paint on both wood and aluminum arrows. Spray a light coat, let dry and then another coat. Let dry according to directions on can. Then I use a polyurethane spray to protect the paint.

I have used both Fletchtite glue and fletching tape and never had any problems with feathers coming off arrows.

I got a water based enamel and am hoping the Platinum will stick ok.

GF, I stain the lower part of the shaft and then give it a couple coats of Min-Wax (or I think that's what it is, I'm not home at the moment to look). A friend turned me onto this many years ago and I'm still using the same can from back then. It's always treated me well.

I always used Duco on paint, was told a long time ago that Duco worked and Fletch-Tite wouldn't.
