I went back to hunting with traditional equipement several years ago. I will never go back to a compound. I have to admit that I have not had the success harvesting game that I once did. But truly love the way I hunt now. My wife told me to go buy a new compound because she loves venison and wants me to be more succesful. Only option is more time in the woods I told her, she said ok. God I love her.

Trad is more satisfying by far, but an empty freezer is no fun at all. I will do anything legal to put venison in the freezer if the season starts to get a little long in the tooth. I had over fifty hunts in October and early November, absolutely covered up in deer, and couldn't get the bow drawn. So I backed off and put one down in a less traditional manner, then resumed hunting with the stick. It only hurt my pride for a little while. We are having venison for supper this evening.

Sounds like you a have a great wife. I've always pulled out the flint lock if I struck out with the bow. It's fun and pretty "traditional" to me at least. I don't like not having venison in the freezer and neither does my wife or son.

I started traditional in 1996. My success rate actually got better. I was shooting instinctive with a compound and the bows were getting so short I was forced to switch. Going to a traditional bow was an easy transition. I think it made me hunt better. My shots tend to be under ten yards....I just hunt better....sorta like when a guy picks up a rifle and thinks he can walk.....give him a bow and he will slow down....give him a sharp stick and he will set over a game trail... It makes you a better hunter

Not much I'd rather do than hunt with a bow. I'll spend the whole month of Sept. bow hunting elk but if I'm not successful I have no problem taking a rifle or muzzleloader out for the late season and filling the freezer. Winter meat is just as important to me as my passion for bow hunting.

You are blessed indeed! I truly love hunting with the longbow & recurve, but if the freezer is still empty come December, I will hunt a few days with the flintlock. Usually able to kill a doe that was feeding on a harvested corn field. Then finish the season again with the bow.

I would never trade down to compound. Yesterday I went to freinds house who just bought a bowtec with everything on it. $2500. Those arrows were blazing and out of the blue he was shooting like magic at 20 yards. Last Elk season he hit a perfect shot from 20 on a nice bull. His bow a BW @50lbs 28. 475grn arrown. He took out one lung and never found the Bull. So now this new magic will solve his pentration issue. Wait till he sees my new SR spinning a 650gr shat at 180-185FPS. He will be back. I could barley hold the compound as so heavy

this will be the first year in 37 since I started bowhunting that I did not kill a deer with a bow. not that I didn't have the opportunity I did at several small buck's & fawns no mature does but the muzzleloader & long range gun did their job. for what it's worth & this is just how I feel. I absolutely love bow hunting & there is no more rewarding way to kill deer (BUT) ultimately a freezer full of venison is more important to me than what weapon I killed the venison with. & my wife doesn't like beef she says it's to greasy

Yes, a compound isn't Trad, but so is a rifle or smoke pole.

I’m dif I guess. Too hard headed and I don’t like anyone demanding I change. I know that’s not your issue but it reminds me of some girl I once dated. She said the back seat on my hog was too small. Traditional equipment is just as accurate as a compound bow. You simply need to learn to shoot better and that will come around with good form and good practice. My average deer kills over 50 + years has been under 20 yards...closer to 15 actually. I expect to hit a certain hair at that distance. If I don't, I'm pretty close.

Great wife, but like some others, if it's just about putting meat in the freezer a less then traditional means is perfectly okay with me. I hunt with the longbow as much as possible because I enjoy the time with it. I use other methods when it comes to putting a few in the freezer soon. In parts of my state we can ONLY shoot doe during archery season. If it gets close to the end and I have not put a couple up for the year, I use what it takes, then resume my interest. George is right about them being just as accurate, but I am not as good.. Yet.. :D

Stupid to say you are as accurate as a compound but hunt in situation that gives you an advantage with the equipment you use. Woodsmanship and experience will eventually come. Don't think you will drop animals as readily with modern equipment but that is the point! To believe differently is futile.

However you want to do it is your business. Most here hunt from tree stands and admittedly never shoot over twenty yards. In that distance you should be able to do pretty much as well with a traditional bow. If you can't, then you can go by other means; a sight on the traditional bow, or a closer in aiming style. A compound is not inherently more accurate. And I never said I would personally use just a traditional bow or go without. Where'd that come from?

Who wears the pants in that family?
Listen there now woman hold up I gots to go out and wrassle me up a grizzly.LOL
I'm not saying to pull a John wayne on her but comes a time when a man has to be a man and not let his doe dictate to him especially during hunting seasons. She needs to realize this and give you some freedom as long as your not being abusive and taking away from them and hurting them. Its a control thing they might have learned from their mothers.
Yup hunting seasons 24 x 7 times 360 and then when foggy comes to dodge in leap year a few days more.LOL
Yup 16 the first and 7 the 2nd and then I got free. They all tried to trap the Cat too so don't get me wrong. They all tried to come back also but well I'll try to hold up there.
Sounds to me you got to get your head right or get good and go shoot and get home. Yes it is that easy there's nothing to it. Anything else is in your head and you hold yourself back so don't blame it on her either and tell us what she is saying.LOL
Now there's a little more to the Pope and Youngs though. Wait till they get into your head then she better look out.LOL

Sounds like you have a good marriage. As for me I'm with the archery-followed-by-rifle crowd. If I don't fill my tag during archery season (stickbow, personal limit 20 yds), then I go back in November with my hi power rifle (dial-in scope, personal limit 800 yds). Pretty extreme differences in hunting "standards"?
I truly admire you good stickbow hunters, I hope I can become one . . . No question archery is better and more challenging, and what I would rather take my animal with, but that doesn't mean I give up legal meat for the season.

Can you help me or I need this or that or your kids need you around more or they need shoes.
Some just don't want you to stay over they want their beds all to themselves.LOL
So before you change out you better think about what might come next. The next one might take all your stuff and sell it and you to get whatever it is your taking out and where is it? LOL
Work it out with her or get her a dog or a hobby or give her children to keep her busy.LOL
As long as you get one that helps you and doesn't take from you work it out.
If she follows you around then you need to get to shoot and be your buddy.
