I been thinking of trying contact cement for gluing on feathers.How well does it work,and how do you guys apply it? I'm all ears for good advice.

It works just fine, on any shaft. I use Weldwood that comes in a bottle with a brush applicator. You don't need much, just a thin skin on the base. Jay Massey talked about using it decades ago.

I have used it, i find fletch tape faster and way less messy.

After trying other methods I have settled on Super Glue.

side note. I did a few carbons useing duco cement & feathers the other day & so far it's holding good but haven't got wet

Fletching with a jig or by hand i use super glue gel, The green cap stuff from gorilla glue. I do prefer the tape tho. I have to patch/replace feathers pretty often, tape makes it so much easier, with 3 dots of glue.

Can feathers be replaced easily on wood when using contact cement? Should be able to just pull the old feather and rub the cement off the shaft and start again, correct? Isn't that one of the properties of contact cement?

My understanding from Jay’s book he used contact cement because of the very wet conditions where he lived and hunted. At least he had first hand experience with that glue.

One of the most effective things to do when one has a question such as this is to try it for themselves. Then they know for sure.

Like George, I've used contact cemnet of one type or another for a long time. It works as well as anything, and better than a lot of things. Cold doesn't affect it, heat doesn't affect it, and wet weather doesn't affect it.

Krag, yes, all you have to do is slide a knife blade under them and apply steady pressure lifting them off the shaft.

Jay didn't make any reference of using contact cemnet because of where he lived, he said he used it because it worked better than anything he had used to date. I also suspect since he was pretty practical guy that he used it because you can buy it nearly anywhere as well.

Krag...Contact cement doesn't come off easy. What you describe is true of rubber cement. If you like things quick and dirty contact is a wonderful friend.

twostrings, DAP Weldwood Contact Cement will indeed roll off with the thumb pressure. Barge contact cement also will roll off with steady pressure. Not sure what brand you're using but I have had great luck with Weldwood Contact cement on both feathers and leather against wood. Easiest cleanup there is.

I am using the Dap, I don't clean up after fletching, the glue I was talking about was on an arrow I feathered over a year ago. Used the back of a knife to get it off, will try rolling next time. Thank you.
