Folks, the IBO Mid America will also be going on along with the Howard Hill Classic.

The place is Tannehill Historical State Park in McCalla, AL. www.tannehill.org

Keep watch this "Thread" as well as the Howard Hill Classic "Thread" here on "Leatherwall".

Folks, all in all, there will be 15 classes for competition at this year's Howard Hill Classic.

FIVE of these have never been here before. As I said earlier, if the IBO has it, I'm trying to coincide so when you come and have a class that hasn't been here before, it will be here now.

I'll also be displaying the newly designed Howard Hill Classic plaque pretty soon, I believe you will really like it.

I'll also be displaying a photo of the 1st Place Belt Buckles.

Awesome!

For the of you that have never been to the Howard Hill Classic, I feel you're in for a tremendous time shooting your bow.

On my Howard Hill Classic course, I've always tried to set up a challenging, yet fun course. Good hunting shots, set up for left & right handed archers. I also try and make sure that the limbs on that archers bow won't be striking anything in it's way.

NOW, you might come up to a stake on a few targets and look down to the target and say, "part of the kill zone is covered". Don't worry, with a foot on the shooting stake, you might have to adjust or lean over just a little, but I always have the entire kill zone wide open. TAHT'S WHAT REAL HUNTING SHOTS LOOK LIKE, RIGHT!?

Come, you'll not regret it.

Levy Bryant as well as Shana Wilson are really getting pumped about holding the IBO Mid America here in Alabama, along with the Howard Hill Classic.

I'm kinda getting excited myself.

Terry Harris

From: THarris
Date: 07-Feb-19

This is what Ms Shana said about the IBO course which I think everyone will enjoy.

"Along with the Howard Hill Classic course, the IBO will set up a 30 target course with a shotgun start, shooting with your peers. We will have the IBO Showcase Shootdown on Saturday evening, with the top 15 men from the white stakes, the top 15 men from the orange stakes, and the top 15 women, by the first round scores off the Howard Hill Classic range. The IBO is very excited about partnering with the Howard Hill Classic."

Im excited as well and think this event will be a tremendous event.

Wow Mark, are you so upset that you stuttered.

Terry Harris

From: Jim Casto Jr
Date: 07-Feb-19

Looks to me like the IBO just changed the venue, not the name of the event. Doesn't seem like a big deal to me. I don't think the participation has been stellar the past few years.

This may have the potential to help both the IBO and the Classic with attendance. I hope it does.

From: JusPassin Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

Agreed, hardly mid america.

From: Bownana
Date: 07-Feb-19

It is not the Mid West Championship. Maybe you misread the title. It is the Mid-America Championship. The term Mid America is a large consolidated region that makes up almost 2/3 of the U.S. total land area. It consists of the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. It is the region which lies between the east and west coasts. If the IBO wants to change the venue location to any of these states, the term "Mid-America" fits. Thanks IBO, Thanks Terry for partnering to make this a bigger and better event. I appreciate the effort and the hard work.

From: THarris
Date: 07-Feb-19

Thank you Bownana, for your superb explanation about Mid America.

Well Bruce and Mark, all I can say, as we say down here in Alabama, "Bless Your Hearts".

I don't know if either of you has attended the Howard Hill Classic, but it has been one of the largest archery events in the Southeastern United States for many years now.

Now, with that said, I don't know what either of you have contributed to Traditional Archery, other than shooting or just trying to pass on unwanted negative attitudes. I may not have done much for Traditional Archery myself, but what I can say is that my events have been able to help some great organizations. To date, I've been able to raise and donate over $50,000.00 to these organizations, not to mention, providing what I consider a fun time for thousands of people over the past 14 years.

I suggest to put down your negative inputs and pick up a bow and have some fun.

Good post Bowmania...looking forward to this.I have only been able to shoot the Classic once and it was great. Tannehill is an awesome venue and the addition of the IBO shoot will make this an even greater event. Thanks in advance to all involved, it's alot of work! See you this summer.

From: Grumpy Jim
Date: 07-Feb-19

I am very interested in attending this event. I haven't shot 3d the last couple of years and am ready to get back into it. I'll be coming from Indiana. Spent 30 years in the south and I'm looking forward to the hospitality.

From: AdAstra
Date: 08-Feb-19

The United States Census Bureau's definition of Mid-America consists of 12 states in the north central United States: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

Hi Jim, there are nearly 300 camp siesta the park for RV's. At the front of the Park there a few with sewer hook-up.

There are several with power & water right at registration, get here early for those. No reservations, first come basis.

There is also pretty much unlimited primitive camping and three bathhouses in the Park as well.

Here's a couple of photos at the registration area with campsite hook-ups.

IBO rules state that you have to set up the shot to give the shooters the entire 8 ring. You can do a lot within that limitation. Sounds like you're gonna do it up awesome.

From: THarris
Date: 10-Feb-19

THarris's embedded Photo

Dana, you've just told on yourself, LOL. When I set a course, you'll see several shots that are challenging yet fun, just like you're talking about. The entire kill zone can be seen, BUT, sometimes you might have to lean a little (not be a contortionist) but just enough to make it a challenge. PLUS, LOOK OUT FOR THE ROCKS!

You need to try and come dow, a little far, but I think it will be worth the trip. Great folks and lots of southern hospitality.

Terry Harris

From: Clydebow

Terry, Don't forget people that shoot left handed! Tall people and short! LOL!

From: DanaC
Date: 10-Feb-19

Cool looking shot! Last year IBO Connecticut they made good use of all the old stone walls to intimidate ya ;-). In Rhode Island we all visited a shot against a stone wall, a hundred arrows 'planted' in the dirt and a sign proclaiming it 'The Arrows' Graveyard'. Danged peccary looked like a mouse...

Whoever goes, bring your cameras.

From: THarris
Date: 10-Feb-19

Hi Clyde, I actually do check for left, right handed as I set the shooting stakes, I check the perimeter to see if one's bow has good clearance as not to whack their bow limbs.

I don't think I've ever had anyone complain about these thing mentioned.

Terry Harris

From: THarris

Now Dana, if you leaned a little to the left, the right side of the 8 ring is exposed.

You IBO competitors, when you're trying to qualify for Saturday's Championship Shoot Down, you'll have to shoot the Howard Hill Classic course. In doing so, you'll automatically qualify for the Howard Hill Classic.

NOW, if you only want to shoot for the day, or all weekend, you can. The difference is that if your 1st round is beaten by a higher score on the HH Classic course, you can turn that score card in to help you hopefully win your class in the Howard Hill Classic

Tal, there will be one course for this IBO event and I'm sure more info will come here fairly soon.

Folks, let me clarify something. There will be TWO separate events, TWO separate courses for ONE OUTSTANDING TIME!!!

Utilizing both Tannehill State Park and a beautiful Boy Scout Camp that sits adjacent to the Park.

You can shoot one or the other or BOTH.

Awards for both.

BTW, there's plenty of parking available, this is just part of it.

Folks, I now have FIVE bows to raffle off at this year's Howard Hill Classic/IBO Mid America Traditional Archery event.

A DAS Bow from 3Rivers Archery ~ a Big Jim's Custom Longbow ~ a Recurve & Longbow from Bear Archery and: A "One of a Kind" Longbow being built just for this event from Acadian Woods Bows.

Bring your money folks, unbelievable bows being raffled off.

Terry Harris

From: THarris
Date: 18-Feb-19

Folks, I believe I said earlier there would be 30 targets for the IBO course. There will be two 20 target courses for the IBO.

NOW, let me clarify in case there was some confusion about qualifying for the Championship Shoot Down..

At some other IBO events, there has been what is called a "Hunters Challenge" course you'd have to shoot if you wanted to qualify for the Saturday Championship Shoot Down.

There won't be a "Hunters Challenge" course, the "Howard Hill Classic" course will be THAT course one will have to shoot to qualify for the Shoot Down.

So, every class will be represented at the Howard Hill Classic, your 1st round automatically puts you into the competition to see if you qualify for the Shoot Down, as well as enters for into the Howard Hill Classic competition.

When you register at the HH Classic table, there will be an all day shooting fee (if you just want to shoot one day) or special weekend rates for singles and families. These rates entitle you to shoot either all day or all weekend.

After your 1st round, you don't have to stop there. You can continue to shoot the Howard Hill Classic to improve your HH Classic score if you'd like or just shoot for fun, YOUR CHOICE.

From: Bownana
Date: 19-Feb-19

IBO membership is not required to shoot the Mid-America Championship. Of course the IBO would love for everyone to become members to support and protect our right to bowhunt.

Wow, GREAT NEWS for you men & women self bow shooters. Even though I've always had those two self bow classes at the HH Classic, The IBO has not, especially for the women. But maybe in the future for both, in the meantime, here's a pretty good idea. Levy Bryant with the IBO, has just let me know that there will be a men and women's self bow shoot down on Saturday afternoon, time yet to be announced. There will also be some sort of 1st place prize, also yet to be determined.

NOW, you don't have to turn in any kind of score, JUST BRING YOUR SELF BOWS and you're in, EXCITING!!!

Arvin Weaver is once again offered to sponsor the Self Bow Shootout at the IBO Mid-America / Howard Hill Classic! $250 cash with an Arvin Weaver custom self bow to be raffled. Folks, as I mentioned earlier, the IBO is having a Men's & Women's Self Bow Shoot Down on Saturday afternoon.

The 1st Place shooters will be splitting $250.00 to start but Arvin Weaver has generously donated one of his outstanding self bows to be raffled off and the proceeds from the raffle will also be added to the 4250.00.

NOW, will all that being said, there is a woman competitor, can really shoot, has informed Levy Bryant, that she can get as many as TWENTY WOMEN self bow shooters to compete. Sh'e been trying to get the IBO to have a Women's Self Bow class in the IBO for years.

I know who she is and I must say the ball is in her court. Let's show Levy that YOU CAN BRING IT GIRL, LOL.

Some seem to shy away from the IBO for some reason but the cool part about this event is you can do Howard Hill or the IBO or both. What every you prefer. Something for everyone. Pappy

From: THarris
Date: 05-Mar-19

You are right Pappy, when I first came to an IBO event, it was at Twin Oaks. I had a blast shooting with and getting to know new and outstanding competitors.

I never felt out of place, we all have the same goals, shoot and have fun, SOME JUST SHOOT BETTER, LOL.

Even the most hard core competitors never made me feel I shouldn't unwelcome, now that I think about it, I might have been the comedy relief, LOL.

Kidding of course, we are all part of the Traditional Archery family, beginner or expert.

Terry Harris

From: Bownana
Date: 05-Mar-19

Yes Pappy, there may be some confusion about the IBO courses being too difficult, and this is far from the truth. It is a true competitive event, testing your abilities to judge yardage, and make the shot, in a structured environment, while standing alongside some of the best shooters in the U.S. What a great opportunity to receive tips and ideas from other traditional archers who excel in the sport. The shots on the IBO course are realistic, with a variety of true hunting distances, and special care given to ensure all skill levels are comfortable and have a positive experience. The goal being for everyone to have fun and enjoy themselves. As always, the IBO will preserve the integrity of competitive traditional archery. I, myself, cannot wait.

From: Grumpy Jim
Date: 05-Mar-19

My only complaint with the IBO is that the entry fees are getting a little salty. I'm an IBO member and think they do a hell of a job. Hey, I have an idea; how about giving IBO members a discount at traditional events!!!

From: THarris
Date: 05-Mar-19

Jim, if I'm not mistaken, it's $30.00 for 40 targets, then a chance if qualified, 20 more on Sunday.

Not to mention the chance at several shoot-downs for other prizes or cash.

Now, if you shoot the HH Classic (25 targets), the fees are a little different. There's a $25 all day fee (as many rounds as you can get in a day). There's a single weekend rate for $35.00 and $60.00 weekend rate of a family up to four. Again, these rates allow you to shoot as many rounds as you can get in, with your highest score counting in the HH Classic competition.

If you really think about it, even if you shoot both competitions, and I hope all do, it's really cheap entertainment for a three day weekend, IMO.

Terry Harris

From: Grumpy Jim
Date: 05-Mar-19

That's not bad. I thought they were 55.00. I'm going to a mixed event this weekend and it's 55.00. Gotta pay if you want to dance. Thanks for clarification.

Terry Harris

From: THarris

Jim, let me correct what I misspoke about, the IBO is only 40 Targets and not a finals on Sunday.

They can shoot Sunday but just 40 targets from Friday & Saturday to get a score for awards. There is no extra 20 targets shot at regional events, only at the world shoot.

The IBO doesn't want people have to stay til Sunday at the regional events.

But, at the Howard Hill Classic, you can still compete until the last shooter goes out on Sunday.

Terry Harris

From: THarris
Date: 07-Mar-19

Alright everybody, I've explained that the HH Classic is a multi round event with the highest score you turn in counts, no matter if it is your 1st round or your last.

NOW, I'm gonna try and explain a little about how the IBO rounds are to be shot.

There will be FIVE times that IBO shooters can go out to shoot 40 targets.

There will be two times on Friday and it will be shot gun starts: First time will be 8:00am and 11:00am. Saturday will be the same, 8:00am and 11:00am.

On Sunday you can start at 8:00am, but it will not be a shotgun start.

THIS IS IMPORTANT!! As long as you get 40 targets shot, you are finished with the IBO round. You can shoot all 40 on Friday same on Saturday, if you can get them in..

Or you can shoot 20 on Friday & 20 on Saturday.

Or you can shoot 20 Targets on Friday or Saturday and finish your 20 targets on Sunday. AS LONG AS YOU GET 40 TARGETS IN.

All other time can be spent shooting the Howard Hill Classic range if you'd like. WHEW!!!

If you have any questions, please feel free to write here, email me or call me.

Terry Harris [email protected] 205-822-3563

From: Bownana
Date: 07-Mar-19

All IBO times are shotgun starts. You will be assigned a stake with your peers. Shotgun starts for the IBO are Friday & Saturday 8am & 11am, and Sunday 8am.

You must shoot 40 targets, however you get them in. I suggest shooting all 40, or 20 and 20. IBO course has A & B ranges made up of 20 targets each. It will be a weekend full of shooting our bows. Can't wait.

From: THarris
Date: 07-Mar-19

Thanks Shana, folks, bring plenty of band aids, you'll be able to shoot till your fingers hurt, LOL.

Terry Harris

Speaking of set-ups, bows many of you may have and other things. Let me remind you of the SIX bows that will be raffled off over the weekend.

Arvin Weaver has donated one of his beautiful Self Bows to be raffled off with the proceeds from that to be added with the $250.00 to be split with the Men & Women winners of the Self Bow shoot-down.

Now, the other FIVE to be raffled.

Big Jim has been so generous over many years by donating one of his Custom Longbows.

Bear Archery, another tremendous contributor to the Howard Hill Classic by donating bows for years as well. This year Bear Archery has donated a Bear Montana Longbow and a Bear Super Grizzly Recurve.

Johnathan Karch with 3Rivers has supported me from day one and again he has done so. Johnathan has donated a DAS Recurve.

NOW, I come to my friend Tim Mullins with Acadian Woods Bows. This year, Tim offered to build a "One of a Kind" bow to raffle of at the Howard Hill Classic. I've seen a rough cut video of this bow, all I can say is WOW!!!

Folks, together these bow are worth, not hundreds, BUT THOUSANDS of dollars.

Let me also add, there will only be a limited number of chances for the five bows I have. Each chance is $20.00 and one will be given away at different time TBA during Friday & Saturday.

Folks, I may be wrong but I don't think I've ever heard of this many bows being raffled at Traditional Archery event ANYWHERE!!!

The one I'm most interested is the "Last Man Standing" event.

I, myself, am not sure how it works but what little was explained to me was that all participants are welcome to participate and will have a blast.

OK, my wife says I'm horrible a giving driving directions, let me see if I can make your experience shooting the IBO/HH Classic easy than I do for driving, LOL.

First, you don't have to join the IBO to shoot the IBO Mid America.

The IBO has two 20 target ranges, Course A & Course B. If you shoot in the IBO competition, you must shoot BOTH COURSES, 40 target total for the IBO competition. The cost is $30.00.

You have 5 different times you can do this. On Friday, the times are 8:00 AM and 12:00 Noon. On Saturday, the times are 8:00 AM and 12:00 Noon. On Sunday, only at 8:00 AM. All times are a shot gun start.

As long as you shoot both courses, it doesn't matter the times YOU choose.

The Howard Hill Classic has 25 targets and the Course opens at 7:00 AM Friday, Saturday & Sunday. If you can only shoot one day, there is an all day fee of $25.00 and you can shoot as many rounds as you can get in. There are special weekend rates for Singles & Families. Fee's for a Single weekend rate are $35.00 and Family rates are $60.00 for a family up to four, living at home. These rates entitle you to shoot as many rounds as you can get in. FOLKS the HH Classic is a multi- round shoot with you highest score you shoot over the course of the weekend counting for your competition.

NOW, if you like to compete with multiple bows, you only have to pay an extra $20.00 per bow, and you can also shoot the different bow as much as you want.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me by phone or email.

Folks, there are some good traditional archery events still coming up before the IBO Mid America / Howard Hill Classic dual event.

In two days the Alabama Society of Traditional Bowmen' "Children's Hospital Benefit at Brierfield State Park here in Alabama. This is a good event and raises money for a GREAT cause.

Then, the first weekend in May, 3, 4 & 5, the Twin Oaks Classic. This event is a can't miss event. Not only is this a great event but you can also build that Self Bow you've always wanted (more on that in minute).

On Memorial Day weekend, May 25 & 26, is the Texas Longbow Championship. And for those of that want to REALLY show your skills with a Howard Hill style longbow, THAT'S where you want to be.

NOW, on to the HH Classic / IBO Mid America, May 31, June 1 & 2 at Tannehill State Park in McCalla, AL. Folks, we have so much going on, you don't want to sleep in, rest when ya get home, LOL.

Notwithstanding the magazine subscription, this is posted on the IBO "ABOUT US" page:

"About Us

The International Bowhunting Organization (IBO) was created in 1984 by a dedicated group of bowhunters who shared the desire to ensure that bowhunting and the ideals of wildlife conservation survive, expand and flourish to be shared, enjoyed and passed on to future generations.

By its charter, the International Bowhunting Organization’s purpose is “To promote, encourage and foster the sport of bowhunting; further bowhunter education; act as a political coordinator and liaison for the protection and advancement of bowhunting; -- function as a clearinghouse for essential bowhunter information; and -- adhere to the basic ideal of the unification of bowhunters.”

Soon after its inception, the IBO launched the Triple Crown of Bowhunting, consisting of three national tournaments hosted in separate states. Utilizing identical rules and classes, the Triple Crown culminates with the crowning of national champions of various age, gender and equipment classes. The series continues to expand each year and has become the undisputed indicator of the best individual performers and equipment in the sport of 3-D archery and bowhunting.

In 1989, the IBO established a series of sanctioned tournaments worldwide in which participants may qualify to compete in an annual finale to be held in a large and accommodating, destination-type venue. Presently, hundreds of local and regional bowhunting clubs host qualifying events for the opportunity to participate in 3-D Archery’s largest and most prestigious event – The IBO World Championship.

As part of the Triple Crown and World events, competitors regularly participate in a unique tradition, shooting the IBO Bowhunter Defense Fund Range. Fees collected from those who shoot these recreational ranges are earmarked for the IBO Bowhunter Defense Fund. To date, this fund has disbursed in excess of $700,000 to help ensure a strong and lasting future for bowhunting. As state game agencies are increasingly recognizing that bowhunting can play an important part in modern suburban American deer management, the IBO is prepared to play a pro- active role in the process and providing the best-trained, best prepared and most ethical bowhunters to take part in forthcoming programs and efforts. The IBO was one of the first groups to publicly recognize the growing need for urban whitetail management--and the integral part which bowhunting can play in this effort.

With the continuing support of the industry’s leading manufacturers, a network of dedicated clubs and groups, and tens of thousands of individual bowhunters, the IBO is prepared to meet the important challenges which will face bowhunting -- today and in the decades to come."

OK, there's gonna be FOUR Shoot Downs at the Howard Hill Classic / IBO Mid America.

What's everyone shooting for?

On Friday, the 1st at 4 PM, is the team shoot with some Lady picking her partner, could be one or more Men. The winning team splits a Cash Prize.

The 2nd at 4:30 PM, is the Last Man Standing, the Winner also gets a Cash Prize and from what I've heard, a pretty cool Trophy.

On Saturday, the 1st is at 4 PM, the Men's & Women's Self Bow Shoot-Down. The two winners split a Cash Prize.

The 2nd is the ShowCase Shoot Down Championship at 4:30 PM. The top 15 Men from the Orange Stake, the Top 15 Men from the White Stake and the Top 15 Women from the White Stake all compete and each have a !st, 2nd & 3rd Place Winner from those three competitions.

NOW, I haven't been told what the 1st Place Winners will receive, but I do know what the 2nd & 3rd will receive. The 2nd Place Winner will have His or Her choice of either a Block Target from Bass Pro Shops, valued at $80.00 or $50.00 donated from American Traditional Archer. These guys were gettin' ready to get it on, LOL.

Start practicing y'all.

Don't forget to sign up for the women's team event when you get to tourney. Ladies are the captains, and they draw names out of a hat the men to make up the teams. It is so much fun and all skill levels are encouraged to enter. No one cares if you miss targets, shoot the tail, or get the center circle. It is all fun, and exciting to meet new people you might not otherwise meet. And, you just might win.

Now, since all those great folks that attended the outstanding Twin Oaks Classic, REST UP FOR MORE FUN & COMPETITION!!!

Rub those sore arms down and ice down those fingers from a wonderful traditional archery event this past weekend.

I hate to have missed it, but a little medical scare kept me home, but everything worked out fine.

THREE WEEKS FROM TODAY!!! Folks, this will be my 15th year for the Howard Hill Classic. When I started, my goal was to only do this FIVE YEARS.

Wow, how time flies.

I hope everyone has enjoyed attending as much as I've enjoyed doing the HH Classic over these many years.

I am also hoping you all will help me make this Classic, one of the best.

Re. the earlier question about IBO membership - you can shoot at most IBO shoots as a non-member 'walk-on' BUT your score will not count as qualification to shoot the World shoot - not to be confused with the -Traditional- World Shoot.

The same holds for state and regional IBO shoots. For instance, to qualify for the New England Championship I need to shoot/compete in at least two NE State shoots. (I shot Mass., plan to hit CT and NH.)

All that being said, it's an organization that works to promote and defend bowhunting, as was pointed out above. I'm proud to be a member and I hope others will join as well.

Terry, thanks for the work you're doing, along with all the workers at this huge two-for-one event.

Folks, I felt the need to share this with everyone.

I’ve heard of the IBO for years, but it was only recently that I found out that the IBO was a lot more than just an organization involved in putting on archery events where outstanding archers come together for the love of archery.

The IBO stands for the International Bowhunting Organization and is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting Bowhunting rights. The IBO distributes tens of thousands of dollars per year to fulfill their mission, to support many like-minded organizations that share the same values and goals. Just recently, the IBO surpassed $250,000 in donations to the Sportsmen’s Alliance who is a great partner in the efforts to protect our way of life.

So, as a reminder, you don’t have to join the IBO to shoot the Mid America or some of their other events, but when you do, you’re helping to protect your own rights.

I'm proud to have the IBO joining me in an effort to bring everyone a truly wonderful opportunity to attend what I think will be an epic event.

Now, with all that said:

GET YER BUTTS IN GEAR AND COME HAVE A GREAT TIME!!!

BUT, in a few days, we'll start placing our targets for some challenging, yet fun arrow flinging.

Nows the time to get someone started in the sport we all love so much.

Bring those friends who haven't been at an archery event for a while, I have no doubt, this event will rekindle that archery fire.
