Lookin' for a Yew stave. Want to build an English LB, at least 70", or longer. Anyone have a crooked, lousy, ugly old Yew stave they want to get rid of?;^) Or maybe even a decent one! Wyatt

Them Yew staves sure can be pricey. I was able to trade a good Osage stave for Yew a few year back to James Remp. After sending him pics of the growth rings, I sent my stave first just so he could see the quality of it. He told me that he actually got two bows from it. I had told him the same thing in our correspondence. You might try to work a similar deal with someone. All I had in my Osage was a little blood and sweat lol.

Yew is expensive, doesn't matter where you buy it. Is it worth it? If you want a yew bow I suppose it is.

Yew is nice, but Osage is way better...

You can indent a piece of yew just by pressing your thumbnail on it.

Thanks guys, guess I'll stick w/ Osage, maybe!;^)

Wyatt,

I have a yew bow that I have been using off and on for 35 years, mostly for fishing in the early days, now for shooting game.

I also had a Craig Akin built special edition longbow which was made from yew and bamboo.

I never had an Osage, but the Yew bows worked very well.

I think of it this way, why is Yew so expensive????

Must be pretty darn good bow wood.!!!!!

Ron I believe yew is costly due to the lore that seems to follow it everywhere it goes. In my opinion osage is far superior in nearly every aspect aside from physical weight, and sometimes cast based off the bows design. Don't get me wrong, I love yew wood, but its far from worth what is charged for both staves and finished bows. I have never paid for it myself, only traded with good friends.

Bahhh, it's all junk. Too soft. Best send it to me for proper disposal ;^)

Ok Jeff I don't want to mess up, all the yew that I come across I will send to you for proper disposal, I am so glad we have folks like you who care about our environment.

Joking aside, it is extremely light, maybe that is why it feels so powerful because you don't expect that performance out of something that you can hardly feel in your hand.

Yew is slightly more elastic than osage so you can get a bit more weight per ounce out of a bow. I think purple plum may even be more elastic than yew.

I would not start off with an expensive yew stave if I were building my first elbs. I think I would start off with some bow lumber just to get a feel for the design. I make a lot of boo backed ipe elbs. They are great shooters.
