I have made and will be running the Hudson Valley 3D Archery Championship Series this year. My goals are simple: 1)Help local clubs with sagging attendance 2)Increase exposure for those clubs, local archers and 3D Archery in the area 3)Give local archers a series they can compete in without having to travel and take days off from work 4)Make it different 5)Keep it simple
What I came up with is a five shoot series format with a Championship shoot off. How is it different? For starters men and women compete together. Instead of divisions that use names and bow styles, ours is based on what you can use with your bow and instead of names, we have groups. Here are the groups:
Group A – Crossbows No Tripods, Bi Pods or Mono Pods
Group B – Any style of bow (No Cross Bows)
Group C – Any style of bow (No Cross Bows) Only one stabilizer to the front that is no more than 12”,
Group D - Any style of bow (No Cross Bows) No Sights No Stabilizers No mechanical releases Thumb Rings allowed Thumb Gloves allowed Finger Tabs allowed Finger Gloves allowed
Group E - One Piece & Take Down Wooden and Fiberglass bows only No adjustable rest No Sights No attachments to the riser or limbs allowed (expect a quiver) No stabilizers No added weights No mechanical releases allowed String is to be released by either fingers or thumb Thumb Rings allowed Thumb Gloves allowed Finger Tabs allowed Finger Gloves allowed No Range Finders
Here is how it works:
The cost is $20 (all money goes to the clubs). The shoots (we will have five this year, all at different clubs), it will be run like most shoots. As another way to make our shoots different, when scoring, the majority of the arrow must be inside the scoring ring to be awarded that point value. If it is not, then you get the lower value. This is done to reward quality shots.
Only one person can win the event and that will be the person with the highest score (and they can come from any group). Besides the overall winner, there will also be the winners of each group. So, we have five competitions, within a competition.
The winners of each group will qualify for the opportunity to compete in the year end Championship Shoot off.
In the Championship Shoot Off (In August), the winners of each group, from the five events, will face off and shoot together to see who the series champion is for that group.
To help promote it I have made a YouTube channel and will film the shoots and hopefully interview the winners of each group. I’m also in talks with local public access to air the episodes on that also. Press releases will be made to radio, newspapers and cable news. I have also have a website up for it and will post the results there too.

I do want to compete with the IBO, ASA and others. I feel there is a void in our area, one that we can fill if we work together. It is about local archers and clubs, It is about those archers who do not want to or cannot travel to compete at those events (FYI, we have only one shoot the whole year in our area run by the IBO, all others are hours away).
If you have the time, I would love to see you at one of the events and to get your feedback on it.
