Took this desert mule deer on public lands in AZ...buck is bigger than the video suggests, just a monster body size. 23 yd. shot, called him in using my own voice and very satisfying to also use my own shooting method. Link to video: https://youtu.be/ugkEhSr-b_0

He took a dive thru a large cactus clump and I didn't have time to get him properly cleaned up. Very heavy buck and it took a lot of effort to haul him out...

Great buck, I grew up between Orical and Florence chasing mulies that looked just like that. I've got 1 on the wall that looks like his grandpa. Great job, I think that the desert mulies are the most difficult to hunt, because they don't migrate for the two seasons. Again great job!!!

Really nice buck. I was hoping the video would have more details on the hunt itself. It did show a more typical mule deer antler on the right side...the left side looks like a whitetail or Coues deer is in the family tree.

I don't want hijack this thread but that's a very large desert mulie, an extremely large couse deer is less than half the size of this buck. Couse live at a higher elevation. I took this one in 1980 in the Tom Mix wash area (low sonoran desert) look at the similarity of the racks, almost 40 years apart.

From: David A.
Date: 12-Jan-19

60 Cowboy, I know the area you are talking about and I still try to get out there a bit. Took one 4x4 some years ago. Very low deer population but I have seen some real dandys.

Al, ya' it is possible he has some whitetail genes, but everything else was mule deer. We find this rack type now and then in southern Arizona and also in SW New Mexico mule deer.

From: David A.
Date: 12-Jan-19

60 Cowboy, very similar and btw, did you hunt on east or west side of the hwy. I preferred west side, but have been disappointed in recent years by the low deer population and too many motor bike desert off roaders/racers....lots of country on east side I never explored. Very tough bow hunt with such low deer populations. That's one of the hardest things about desert mulies, they are rarely abundant...if you have a shot opportunity "don't miss!"

From: 60 Cowboy
Date: 12-Jan-19

Dave, again congratulations that's one helluva buck

From: 60 Cowboy
Date: 12-Jan-19

I always hunted the east side, kinda between Tom Mix and the Big Sandy and the washes going toward the Gila. I know guy's that hunted the open deserts south of Coolage adjacent to the farm fields that got some great bucks also. I moved from the Florence area back in 05. The deserts were getting quite crowded then, I couldn't imagine what it's like now. Great job Dave, January is a special time in the desert.

David strikes again. You definitely find the big ones and don't blow the rare opportunities. What you do works. Can't argue with your success. Way to start the new year my friend.>>>>----> Ken

You have quite the deer there and a wonderful story to match!

From: David A.

Kelly, it's a Bob Lee TD longbow with all micarta riser. 57# and 58". I hadn't taken a desert mule deer with a longbow in quite awhile so opted for the longbow on this hunt. It's pretty much a full out hybrid longbow with recurve type of riser.

Wayne temperature can get up to the mid 80s around noon time. But it just depends, we recently had a snowfall and usually temperature are high 30s to mid 40s at night with shirt sleeve temperatures mid day. Very pleasant for the most part.

nice, very nice. Grunting by hand just makes the deer all the better. I live in AZ, and I concur that there are low densities in 37A and 37B. You have pulled some good sized deer out of the desert. Impressive.

Very nice buck David!

60 Cowboy I did a combo hunt for coues, javelina and Mt lion NE of Oricle a number of years ago. Beautiful country! We did hunt one day in the desert closer to Oricle but the only mule deer we saw were at a distance.

JK, thanks for the memory jog. The problem was I couldn't shoot trad. bows worth a darn back then (nor could most others, IMO). That's about when I started to experiment, thinking outside the box. Never ever ever give up...!

Dandy buck David. And congrats on filling a tag on desert muleys. I've hunted them in the late Az season and prairie muleys in Montana. Any open country muley buck is a trophy. I'll stick with mountain muleys. Less tag soup that way, lol.

Great buck David altho doesn't surprise me as you are on to those Desert mule deer big time. Did you get him close to where we scouted when I was down there a couple years ago. Great job! Joel
