Been a while since I have been active here due to computer issues. Now that I have that fixed I am back!

It's been two years since my last bbi and am wondering what you guys are using to finish ipe. In the past I have used True Oil but that can take up to a week before it cures. I am in the experimenting process of using Minwax Helmans spar urethane but waiting on results. Any good sealants for oily woods like ipe? Thanks Tim

about 4 light coats of true oil I find works great and does set up fast if at least at room temperatures.

If you're Tru-oil sits around too long it may take weeks to dry! Mine always does that before I use it all.....and I've tried every way of storing it once opened!

I have different colored ipe from very dark to medium brown. The lighter brown cures normal but the dark seems to take much longer.

These two pieces were sprayed with Helmsman spar urethane last night. The light piece was cured in a couple of hours. The dark piece has sat overnight and is still tacky.

I guess my issue lies more in the ipe than the true oil.

Rub or spray a coat of shellac on first. It sticks and dries on everything. Then use whatever sealer you choose. I use Helmsman only, in a spray can.

Thanks for the replies! I really like using True oil but was holding off from buying any more. I will give it a go and try these recommendations. Thanks again Tim

This is also very true. Old Tru oil seems to take a lot longer to dry.

Never used it on an oily wood but in general if you cut the Tru-Oil with mineral sprits anywhere from 25% spirits to 50/50 it not only dries quicker but lays down a thinner coat that doesn't need to be worked between applications and is a lot more subdued finish than the glossy finish when used full strength. Takes more coats for the same protection but dries a lot faster so overall time is a wash. Solves the problem with the Tru-oil getting thicker on you too.
