First let me say I have always wanted to do this and finally am trying. I using a stave of black locust (at least I think it is).
It was a small tree when I cut it and it has been air drying to two years in my barn.
I started on it two days ago after watching a bunch of Clay Hayes videos.
1. I noticed it's super notty which is cool but It peeled back some serious wood as I chased down a ring.
2. Piece is 66 or 67 inches but one of the ends was sprouting a branch. (see pic)
3. Should I bother continuing? Or just make it a walking stick. I know locust probably isn't the best to start with but it was there and available.
Sorry for all the pictures but would appreciate any thoughts.

Most of the knots are in the middle of the bow.

Black Locust can be tricky. I just finished an edge grain up with bad knots on the back. The knots were running horizontal across the back of the bow. Not good. The bow shot good, but with those knots I have to back it so it doesn,t blow. You need to go over to the Primitive archer sight ,and sign in. There you will get all kind of guidance from some very good bowyers.Never go over a knot with a draw knife. Use a rasp, and a curved shaver so you don,t get those rips in the wood. If you have violated a ring you will have to chase it down past the rips, and get a clean chased ring.Tiller must be near perfect or the belly will check.Hickory, White or Red Oak or Walnut would be better wood to start with, but done right Black Locust makes a fine bow.bob

Thanks. Figured I might be over my ski's on this first one. I am gonna cut some hickory up and make some staves after deer season is over in OH. Have some good friends around that might have a stave they'd part with as well. :)

With locust you don't need to chase rings. The wood under the bark is the back of your bow.

Locust is better with a heartwood ring on the back. You really should rip[ off the sapwood chase a clean ring. That being said, your piece is firewood and beyond your current skill set. Maybe 20-30 bows from now you can tackle a piece like that.

Thanks for being honest Pearl. A bow starts with a piece of bow wood. Not all wood is bow wood.

I too have found my best osage in Ohio. It's better than what grows here, less than an hour away, and there's a lot more of it.
Go gitcha some.
