Jon it's great therapy. Hope you start making some flakes again soon.
Stoner I think Frank called it Milk Glass but he always has some name for everything. I know it was a countertop. It was probably close to inch thick and broken into pieces. Outback said it looked like Carra Glass? It knapped pretty good. Better than TV Glass. It seems stronger. Had to hit it pretty hard to get flakes to release and Edge was pretty strong. I got some other stuff to.

Did't know you are from Michigan. You look on the map and go north of Petoskey to the town of Norwood. We walked about 1 1/2 miles up the Lake Michigan beach to the rock source spot. I found about 2 gallon bucket of Petoskey stones also.

You sure do a nice job making those bodymanbowyer.
I wish I was at Flint Ridge but alas my son needs my help right now. I had to use my telepathic knapping skill to knap with you all from home. Must have helped cause it turned out pretty nice. Have fun everyone and I'd love to see some pictures.

Thanks bodymanbowyer. I really do like how you make your wooden points. They look quite realistic. That's not easy to pull off

Knapped a point out of Norwood chert while at Flintridge this past weekend. First point since last November when my Chris got sick.
The point was knapped out of the same material as the larger rock shown. Gathered all the material at the same time. I soaked the material over night in water which made it easier to knapped. A Mike Cook trick.

Well it certainly looks like you still got the touch Jon.
Not familiar with Norwood chert. Is it a petrified wood? Does Mike soak all his material overnight? Or just this stuff?

Norwood is chert along the shores of Lake Michigan in Norwood Michigan. We went up there 3 weeks ago for a rock run. I soaked it over night. Going to have some red on that point this fall.

Should have read your posted better. He doesn't soak any rock he cooks. I may soak some uncooked Texas rock to see how it knaps.

Thanks Jon. I remember your rock hunting trip up north post from a few weeks ago. Guess I didn't put the names together.
At any rate looks like you still have the touch and look forward to seeing that point again with a red tone on it.

Thanks Jon, I have some cholla saved from AZ, just haven't figured that configuration out just yet. I also want to try pine cones.
As much as I like jaw bones and antler. Trying to use up some scrap that I just can't get myself to throw away. John

Stoner the cholla is actually pretty decent to work with. It can be shaped and worked like regular wood, at least any that I had .

Wow fooled me John. That looks great.
TK it is a fascinating craft. It can take awhile to figure it out. Even after I've been working at it for several years I still break points or end up with clunkers. I still find it relaxing but I have to be in the right mood. Most people say they wouldn't have the patience for it. Honestly. When I'm in the right mind set, it's very relaxing and amazing how fast time goes by.

No problem John anytime. I enjoy seeing what you make. That celt is looking really good. They tapered them like that so when they used them the celt worked it's way tighter into the handle.

Thanks John. It was a slab given to me from a very dear friend. He also gave me some cholla. I'm working on it now. Posting it on PA Flint knapping section. I think it's called first pass. So far I been posting the progress from first pass flaking the slab. To making and halvting the blade to it. It's gonna look pretty sweet if I do say so myself
Here's the handle with one thin coat of tru oil

Looks like it'd be a great place to knap 9/10 broke. I'd like to learn how to do that. I have a cousin that did the whole front of his house. In his spare time. Took him a couple years but it turned out great. He has lots of stuff in there when you really look at it 4 guitars. A sunrise. I can't even remember all the stuff that's hidden in it, but I'm jealous.
I found a piece of driftwood from my special place. Cut a couple antlers just right. I think it's gonna look something like this.

This is what I ended up with. I'm not sure but this might be my last point of 2019. I kinda screwed up my thumb trying to get a steer back in and it just hurts to much to knap right now. Oh well I'm pretty sure it'll get better in 2020. Merry Christmas everyone.

Thanks Jon, couldn't have done it without you sir. Thanks for everything. I usually don't name my knives, but this one seems to have one central thing that people seem to see in this stand. I showed it to my buddy Randy this morning. He really liked it. After awhile he was sitting there watching me work on something else and he says. I'm not trying to put it down, or take anything away from it. But sitting here looking at it it looks so cool. It kinda looks like a petrified Buffalo Turd. I had to laugh as I've had people tell me it looks like a Petrified woolly mammoths foot and a hippopotamus.lol.
I think I'm going to name it "Buffalo Chip"

PS thanks for looking and as my buddy Randy said. It looks so cool, like something you wouldn't want to step in though.lol
