Longer top bow is a Penobscot.Made from Ash, and Oak. Bottom bow is all Hickory. Both these bow will adjust draw weight up 15 lbs by twisting, and untwisting the back strings.Invented be Big Chief Thunder. Original bow was made from American Hornbeam in around 1900.Before that no real evidence of the double bow. Many myths have been written about these bows.A well made self bow will give the same performance. The big advantage of these bows is that you can adjust draw weight. They make a great conversation piece also.Made these two about 8 years ago.Fun bows to shoot, but sort of bulky.

Fine looking bows!!! Did you build them?

The Mic Mac bows are pretty cool. I've never actually seen one other than in pictures, but understand that the pull weight can be adjusted. I'd love to know who made those! I found out in my adult life that my great grandmother was Mic Mac.

Guys I do things Ass backwards when I am posting. I made the bows about 8 years ago. When I made them I was awed by the design back then.I made one from a Ben Pearson Spectre by adding the second limb on it.Worked out Ok.You can also adjust tiller with the 2 back strings. Algonquin tribe of natives, and their typical bows were simple D shaped bows.I have a book on Indigenous people of north America on page 225 that shows Mic Mac Indian drawing that D shape bow with a pipe in his mouth in 1873.They liked their tobacco.

Bassman, for another bow that is draw weight adjustable build a regular single stave bow and use silk or something similar to make a cable back. As wit the Penobscot. the draw weight can be adjusted by twisting the cable.

Great looking bows there.

fdp , I have made a few that way with nylon string, and twisted them really tight with a small lever stick sort of like Eskimos made their bows.Back in the day I played with a lot of different designs. I have slowed to a crawl now making bows.Got old fast.

I have a Pebenscot I bought last year. It’s too short 52”, but is still fun to shoot. I will get another longer, non-recurve soon. Arrowchucker

I see you make them both Penobscot ,and Mic Mac style.I made one from all bamboo, and gifted it to my friend who left it in his camp above the fire place, and sold the camp. Wished I had that one back.Yours look good. When I show guys my bows they always ask first about these bows. When I show them draw weight can be adjusted they are amazed. Fun bows to build and shoot.

I use Hop Hornbeam when I can get it and also White Ash makes a good MiKmaw. Some woods dont seem to do as well Like Yellow Birch and Maple those woods dont like to bend and shorten at the same time. Its good to see some bowyers making these bows, not many do. Nice bows Bassman.

Nice bows, and therein lies the irony of calling traditional archery 'single string'. I was always intrigued by some of the early design in bows. Nice work Bob.
