Thought I would share some pictures of a Staghorn T-60. I have owned a lot of bows but this is my first Staghorn. I am impressed by the design and performance.

It is 60" long and 52# @ 28". Draw is as marked.

Because it has phenolic overlays I decided to use a string made from Rampage. Bow is a very quiet and steady in the hand. I am using 28" 2114's with 145 grain heads.

I am hoping someone like casekiska will have some knowledge of the serial digits and how that can be deciphered.

I think the combo of zebra wood and the curved stripe is quite fetching!!

Thanks..

Interesting you should ask. I was shooting three bows today. A Tri-State Jaguar that is 60" and 46#, a 1964 Red Wing Hunter that is 50" and 58" and this bow.

The RWH also has a string made from Rampage with padded loops.

I was using 1816's in the 56# bow and 1916's in the 50# Hunter. My foam target is getting shot up a bit on the centre and the arrows from those two bows were penetrating about 2/3 of the way through the foam.

I was surprised when the first arrow from the Staghorn disappeared with just the nock visible! The next now went halfway up the fletch. I shot the other two on the edges but they went deep as well.

Those arrows were 2114's and the Staghorn is only 2# more than the RWH so it is very quick indeed!

Can't make out the serial number, what is it?

Staghorn was 15 miles from my house plus I used to sell them when I first started an archery shop in the late 1960's.

That is the Tempest model, which is what the T stands for.

Really nice looking bow.

I had one in the mid 80's except mine had been flocked. I also had a 60" 1 piece Silvertip. They were both 64lbs and there was only 1fps difference in their average speed.Yes the 60" Staghorns were very fast. The 64" not so much in my experience.

Peter, what a beauty and shooter! It has a good home. Lance

Thanks for all the great info.

Serial digits are JG9404T

About what year would it be and was this wood combo common for the Tempest?

Sorry...I just saw a typo in my post above.

I meant to write I was using 1816's in the 46# bow and 1916's in the 50# bow.

The shafts from the two other bows were narrower than the 2114's but did not penetrate anywhere near the depth of the thicker arrows. Pretty impressive.

Old bows interest me so when I see one I've not heard of I have to go looking. What I found about this bow definitely has me interested. The first site gives a bit of history and early prices and a little explanation about the speed and penetration. According to the second site prices have gone up a bit. At he bottom of the page it says all prices are USD 2018.

Really nice bow.Like the riser ,and tip over lays. If it shoots as good as it looks it is a keeper for sure.

Yes, zebrawood was the main handle wood for the Tempest. XP’s were Rosewood. Main difference between these two models was more deflection to XP riser than that of the Tempest.

The other difference was the dual wedge tapers in the XP, Staghorns top of the line hunting bow, which was available in 60 & 64” lengths only. Tempest was available in lengths from 58” all the way up to 69”. Keep in mind these are not AMO lengths so a 60” bow was really 58” AMO.

I’m guessing 1969 for the year.

Pretty bow and in Friskies favorite color, too! Ben

I found this on how to age a Staghorn.

First letter is the year, second letter is the month, next numbers are number of bows made in that series and the last letter is the model.

Production started in 1957 with the letter "A" so B would be 1958 and so on.

Month A is January, B is February and so on , like Roots and Shakespeare's.

So my Staghorn's serial digits are JG 9404 T. So that would mean my bow was built in July 1966 and is the 9404th Tempest made.

I will measure it tonight but I know the string I put on it came from a bow that was less than 60" AMO.

Frisky drools like a bloodhound when he sees that glass!

He lusts after all of my green glass bows, especially this one!

I want to thank everyone who responded on the thread or by PM for helping me to find out about this Staghorn.

Much appreciated!

Most of you know that I love Howatt's but this Tempest is impressive! Bill Pyle put a great deal of thought into his bow design and his lam designs were impressive.

At some point I'll jump in my old clunker with a half-dozen bows, including this one, and make the eight hour trip to spend some time with crookedstix in Maine on the Field of Glory and do some flight shooting and get into some other mischief, as we are inclined to do!!

The nock-to-nock measurement of the Tempest is 58.5", as HH suspected.

Sorry my mistake. Mine was an xp60, completely different riser.
