Possibility I will be moving to Henderson from Pa soon. Interested in opinions based on experience regarding the whitetail and black bear hunting in this part of the world. Is there plenty of opportunity? Plain and simple. Thanks for all input. Chris

In Henderson County you'll have the Pisgah National Forest in your back yard. Get Game lands permit with your N.C. hunting license. Archery season opened Sep. 08-30, Oct.14-Nov18, Dec. 09-Jan.01. You can bow hunt during Black Power and gun season. Trout fishing is also very good. Go online to ncwildlife.org

Hendersonville is in Henderson County (Western NC). The city of Henderson is in N.E.- N.C.

Sorry if any confusion. The place is actually Flat Rock, which is in the Henderson vicinity, in Henderson County. The place will have enough private ground to hunt. So my question is about the general opinion on the herd ( as well as any thoughts on bear hunting). How's the hunting there?

Hendersonville vicinity, rather.

I've never deer hunted that far east. The bear population is good in Buncombe County (next door to Henderson county)

on private & pulpwood land you'll probably have to deal with dog hunters. a lot of guys from nc come here to run dogs ??? not sure why but it's not really a problem except for the few without any respect that put out on others property. I used to live in Andy mans neck of the woods & that's dog hunting country & I was very successful still hunting tracts after they ran the dogs the deer would be stirred up & moving everywhere. just something to keep in mind

No dog hunting in the west end of the state, which is where Henderson County is.

That area is just outside the Nantahala National Forest, and not too far south of Pisgah National Forest. There should be plenty of access to public lands.

I have not hunted that far west in NC. But I have trad friends from Liecester, just north of Asheville. They tell me that the deer herd in that area is thin, but recovering slowly. I am told the biggest difficulty is finding access to land that isn't under a lot of hunting pressure. Lots of private land in that area. They aren't bear hunters, so I have no idea in that regard.

It’s a pretty part of the state but it’s definitely tough hunting. Not nearly as many deer or bears as eastern NC. The Pisgah National Forest can be really steep terrain and tough to access for hunting. If you are a bowhunter you are probably better off concentrating on the Piedmont or eastern NC...

The northern part of Henderson County offers some reasonable opportunities in the valley along the river, pretty flat with some crop land. Eastern Henderson County has a lot of apple orchards but not as many deer as you'd think.
