Just starting to play around with a Montana long bow. What brace height does yours like? I am used to my recurves being 7-8. This bow seems to like 6 3/4. Do you using any type of silencers? I have asked for this to be debate-free.

You need to use what your bow likes when you shoot it. 6 3/4 is likely just fine. It's part of the tuning dynamics so find where it works best for you...doesn't matter about us.

8" brace height, 1 pair of catwhiskers (48 strands, 1" long) inserted and served in, 14 strand B50 flemish string at 13.5" from top and 20" from bottom.
55# old model Montana, 3 under.

7” for me. I have fur silencers on my Montana. Lik e George said though fool around with brace for your arrow. I like lower brace heights. My Montana is very quiet and shoots great.

You can see with the responses that there's a lot of different between users. I think 8" is high, but it works for those guys, so it's not too high. There you go.

And there is the correct answer. Brace height is an arbitrary number.

Thank you kginrick. Wasn’t asking what it should be. I already found that out. I never tried anything close to 8 though. It shoots much better as far as noise and hand shock at 6 3/4 then 7 1/2. That was as far as I tried.

I think much of what makes the "right" brace ht. is arrow spine. If you are spined a bit heavy then shortening the brace will shoot better. Spined to light and raising the brace with help. Bows don't really have a magic brace that's why we get competent shooters that like the same bow braced differently.

I like the feel of mine at 7 3/4"....one pair of cat whiskers and its the quietest bow I own. A real pleasure set up this way.

Well, my memory is bad. I had not shot either of my montana bows for a while. I checked the brace and it was 7 3/4" on both, not 8" as I had previously posted. I shot some arrows today and actually liked it at 7 5/8" the best. That's all.

There is a reason multiple fine shooting people come up with a different brace for the same bow. It has more to do with arrow spine than you think. If your bow is spined too stiff lower the brace. (Stiff for a right hander is arrow nock kicking right). If the arrow nock is kicking weak (left for a right hander) raise the brace a bit. This only works if you are already pretty close to the correct spine but it will really help you fine tune.

7-1/4"- beaver balls - for the money Montanas can't be beat! Shoot as good or better than most! And really quiet! Shot the largest WT of my stik career w/ it, 2016.
