Good day! I would welcome some advice. My wife ahoots a shallow rd longbow. She draws 23 inches, 30lb draw at that dl.Sight window 1/8 outside center. I mistakenly bought 35-40 spine woodies in 5/16 for her. They are way too stiff.Even if I leave the arrows overly long.
My question is, would 25-30 spined woods work, cut to 25 inches,100gr points? Are the 25-30lbs 5/16's durable and keep their straightness?I live in South Africa and ordering from 3 rivers, dont want to make a mistake again.
Kindly Hunt

That's a pretty short power stroke so I think the 25/30 would work but I would start them out about 28" rather than cut them off right away, especially with 100 grain tips. I have old 30# Bear wood target arrows from the mid 60's that are straight and shoot fine from lighter bows.

I tend to agree with George, but it's going to be hard to find 5/16 wood arrows spined less than 30#. Lots in the 30#-40# range, but less than 30# is quite rare. You might need to sand them down a bit or go to 1/4-inch.
Could try even heavier points on your existing shafts. Of course, that's going to slow them down quite a bit and increase the arc of the trajectory..

Hunt: AMO spine gives you the spine for a 28" arrow, if you cut them to 25" they will spine 15# heavier, so a 25/30 will spine 40/45. For every inch shorter than 28" the spine increase is 5#.
I think I would do as Orion said and get some 1/4 dowels from Lowes. They will straighten nicely with heat, I've made hundreds of them for kids at 24".

Check with The Footed Shaft. He just got a large amount of 5/16 old stock cedar shafts. He may have what you want.

Great folks at Wapiti archery should be able to help you. Begin by not cutting the shafts at all, just taper and install nock and point and see how they fly. You can then trim as you tune. Best of luck.

Been my experience over the years that under 30# spine shafts are so limber that just lowering the 2# weight on them while spinning bends them. For women/kids with short draws/short arrows I used nothing less than 30-34# spine, made them a couple inches longer and they all shot fine. Yes, they are stiff but all bows/archers should be able to shoot a variety of spines in an given bow weight at least 15-20#.

Ok. Thanks so much for the advice guys.Kelly, thats what I was afraid of. That 25-30 spines wont keep their straightness and will bend easily. I think I will go with 30-35s then.
