I'm always curious on what arrows choices everyone sets their bow up with so I thought I would start this topic. What is your arrow set up and what is the poundage of the bow you are shooting it out of? Wood, Carbon, Aluminum. What is the make of the arrow if it has one? Feathers or vanes? How long is the arrow? Are you adding any weight up front? Whats the weight of the field point/Broadhead? What is the total weight of the arrow? Attach pic if you have one. Thx Just curious. Always love cool looking arrows.

All arrows are spined checked to the the bow I used whether it be a self bow, long bow or recurve. The point end.

Cedar arrows with glue-on points of 125 to 145 grain...28". 2016 aluminum arrows, 29" with 145 to 160 grains up front. I don't bother with crazy heavy weights out front as the best indicator of future performance is past performance, and what I've used for over fifty years still works now.

My arrows are rather plain and I've showed them here now and again. Total weight varies from 9 to 12 grains per pound, depending on the bow and arrow setup.

I shoot nothing but wood,,,I prefer cedar but will use any wood that flys right I prefer breasted shafts with rear tapper second choice I shoot Hill style swing draw so my draw length is 26.5 so I cut my arrows to 27.5 I use 4-5” shield or parabolic fletchings,,Turkey feathers,I set 5” off set and 4” helical either RW or LW 11/32 mostly and some 23/64ths on heavier weight spine,,I shoot ASL’s only, 75#,68# for hunting big game but got a gem of a 65# resently that might just take the first place for all my hunting,,I am hunter not a target archer Any field point will do depending on arrow spine and weight to match the bow I shoot 100grns to 160grns Broadheads I mostly shoot Howard Hill 2 blade 160’s and 145grn,,but will also use Zwickey Eskimos 145grn and I use Bear greenies for small game I also use 357 cases with #4 shot lead for added weight to match arrow spine

I am changing my idea of arrows right now so I don't have a perfect set-up yet.

I will tell you what I am shooting now that is working perfect for me.

Like Mountain Man I shoot strictly the Howard Hill Method. With canted bow, swing draw, open glove. I shoot nothing but wood from my self-bows, all I have are self-bows.

I just made up an arrow that is 28.5 BOP POC 45 Spine with a 190 gr. point and tru-flight 5.5" feathers trimmed to my specs.

The bow is a Yew that I crudely carved out about 35 years ago. 40lb. @ 27.5 draw 68" NTN, fast flight string 12 strand two bundle.

This is my first shot of the day with this arrow, I shot many more with it at 21 yards with similar results....fly's beautifully. I will show more later.

95-100 spine cedars, three left wing natural barred feathers and Howard Hill broadheads.

From: Mountain Man

Steve you like Helical fletching on your hunting arrows I know your shooting heavyer draw weight then myself so I’m sure your arrows are quicker and I know enough to know you have more range hunting then me

I just find them noiser over off set but I hunt in the 30yrd range and usually much closer where noise is more prevalent especially with a slower arrow Just wondering could be me to

From: Steve turay Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 06-Dec-18

You are right Scott, they are a bit noisier than an off set. I shoot a 5 3/4" feather fletched on a bitzenbeger. In order to be sure the quill is square to the shaft I wind up with a lot of helical.

I haven't made any new arrows of late for me .99% of all my arrows are footed homemade .A few are 4 fletch but most are 3 fletch.Just basic cresting done without a cresting machine. Some are barreled or 10" end tapered I use no commercial knocks just reinforced self knocks and occasionally individually made hardwood knocks The hunting arrow has a trade point 4 fletch and no cresting but still footed All those arrows are well used and some 10 or more years old.3 pictures business end
