Small game hunters don't mind this at all, and since deer season is over till the 26th, we will be able to track those rabbits and pheasants pretty well.

Don't give up Richard, there's some in Mississippi. ;) Never can tell with the rain pattern staying with us and the cold coming in. We have 8" in the front yard, still snowing but not as heavily as before. Probably have 10 by AM.
I love it. It insulates the ground from drying out so quickly and provides slow absorbing moisture.

You can have it down there George. We only got an inch or so today. It's been mostly sleet and freezing rain but before to long the lake effect will turn on and we'll get buried.

George, you still have small game hunters around you? They're almost extinct in my neck of Pa. Once they shoot the 3 pheasants they stock on the game lands the few small gamers that were left go home.

8" or so total, with about 2 hours worth of sleet making this stuff really heavy. It was a blast to shovel esp. after hunting and spooking bedded deer before daylight.

Snow is great as long as it's not drifting and deep, or if ice freezes on top of it.When it rains and it's frozen that makes it tough for everybody and everything. But snow Is cool to look at when it 1st starts covering the ground.

Snow is extremely beneficial for the land. Nowadays the roads aren't much an issue as there are plenty of state trucks out there when it hits. By 10 AM this morning, the rural roads around here were all plowed and treated. As long as there isn't a thick coat of ice on top, the animals will actually benefit as well.
It is a good insulator for the ground when the air temp gets cold as well. The ground will stay around 32 and not be leached of it's moisture and rarely will even freeze with a good cover. Not everyone likes it, no doubt. I'm not too happy either when it gets waist deep, but this one stopped at 8" here where we live.

Ours got wet this afternoon which made for very quiet stalking. I jumped five out of their beds on the way in this afternoon so I followd them. One was a buck judging by the track. Perfect tracking conditions. I followed for over an hour until I,got into them, now feeding. Snow is my friend for this reason. They were in the blackberries, but just as I spotted one she also did me. Was within range so I kicked myself for not seeing her first. She blew and blew them all out. I circled and got looks at two more. One a small buck, but they were out of there as soon as I saw them in the now dim light. The door on reg. Bow season has closed. Late season in Dec. for a week. Gunners start tomorrow. Not as much fun, but maybe a big one will show up.

Some fun photos above. Tracking those rabbits sounds great George. Used to hunt them on the coldest days.
Came out of the Adriodnacks mid-week with 6-inches and 11 degree lows chasing us down US 81, or the "Snowbird's Trail". Lots of New York and Quebec license tags traveling along with us. Seems early this year for those first snows.

Looks a little different here. Went from rain to freezing rain to snow. Everything is covered with a thick layer of ice. Not good for critters. My fruit trees' branches went from pointing skyward to pointing toward the ground overnight. Many, many trees and electric lines down, no electricity since thursday night, heard reports of 30,000 to 40,000 folks without power in our county. It's 3 am, I'm going out to fire up the generator to take the chill off.
