I was given over 100 brand-new aluminum arrows, all uncut NOS. A variety of sizes, ranging from 2213 to the smallest, to 2314, 2315, 2317 (I killed my first deer this year with a 2317). AND, I've got quite a few 2413, some 2419 (15gr/inch!), and even some 2512 and 2514s. Wow, these are some fat arrows!

So my question is, are there any of you out there that shoot or especially hunt with arrows than are 24/64, 25/64, or even fatter? Are these arrows still in common use, or has everyone gone to skinny carbon? If anyone uses these, has the durability of an aluminum shaft with walls as thin as 12 or 15 thousanths been an issue?

Some of those fat-boys make awesome footings for woodies. Use an insert and you get woodies with screw-in head convenience.....

Otherwise...

If they’ll tune for you, use ‘em! If you won’t use ‘em, pass ‘em forward to someone who will.

I shoot some XX78 2312 out of my Border Black Douglas and X7 2312 Cobalt with 4" Quick spin vanes out of my Morrison metal ILF.I had a bunch of 2317,they were too stiff for my trad bow so I made them into Flu flu's.

Used a lot of 24 and 25"s still have a bunch in autumn orange. Never hunted with them but they caught a few lines in competition. They do look huge compared to the new carbons. >>>----> Ken

I somehow got a bunch of 2315, 34" long. Seem to be awesome for overdraw practice. (I'm playing with Asiatic style floating anchor, drawing past the head with a long Ming Dynasty style reproduction bow). Tons of fun, and at 17 yards disturbingly accurate.

Also, at my archery range I have three very tall dudes with albatross wingspans. These guys HAVE to use 34" arrows, and at that length the stiff spine mellows out totally- even from 29#@28" bows. which of course stack up in addition to the long power stroke.

Don't know about the hunting application, but the flight from a 33"-34" draw & release is kind of scary express train impressive at our range, out to 45 yards.

The average person has little use for them unless your bow is cut well past center. Those things are pretty stiff spine. I remember guys shooting the full length 2419 barebow indoors back in the day to get them closer to a point-on at 20 yards. That was in the bowhunter barebow class where you couldn't string walk and the index finger had to touch the nock at all times. 20/64 is about as fat as I can go with my bows, but I do have some 23/64 cedar that shoots just fine at the correct spine.

Yeah at one time I though large marge arrows were cool especially when i need then on paper targets and on the line a fat arrow might nick it and get you in.LOL

After you get used to shooting the knitting needles I now prefer them over Marge.

Looking at the spine charts, it looks like the 2413 spines just a tad stiffer than the 2216s that I use, I'd just have to cut them 0.75" longer to exactly match the dynamic spine of my current tuned 2216 arrows. AND, the 2413 would make for a 50g lighter arrow. Would be fun to show up at my indoor Traditional 3D league with those telephone poles! I could probably make the 2512 work, but the finished arrow would probably be near full-length, maybe 33" or so...

This year, while shooting with the boys, I was shooting my 2317 arrows - had one of the guys, shooting a skinny carbon arrow, put his arrow right into my 2317, just about swallowed up that skinny carbon, were in not for the fletching I think his arrow would have completely disappeared into mine!

2413's were great for speed and line cutting. I still have a couple dozen XX75 33" orange ones. >>>>-----> ken

Never used anything bigger than 23/64ths. All of my POC are 65 to 70 spine at that size, and I have 11 perfect AO 2317s that I don’t shoot anymore. Also have a couple doz 2315s that I can shoot from several bows.
