I am replacing the chains on all my LocOn tree stands with Amsteel rope. I have been using the Whoopee sling knot system. The Amsteel I have been using is overkill and enough to strength to operate a Crane. Anyone know the best diameter to use? When LocOn was making their stands they calle it the "Speed Hitch" which is really a Whoopee sling!. And "Whoopee" the temperatures and humidity have finally dropped! Thanks TLM

I'd ask the folks that material what they suggest for the application and knot you are using.

Thanks FDP. Amsteel is tough stuff. Must be made with same material as Braid and FF bowstrings! TLM

What's a whoopee knot? Do you have a picture?

Here it is. works better than chain and quieter. I take my stands down at seasons end, so the critters don't chew on the rope. TLM

5/16 here. It’s way over. I experimented with 7/32 and it was plenty strong. But, Amstel is so abrasion resident, I was afraid it’d end up cutting through the eye bolts or shearing off the bolts altogether. It’ll cut through a tree really quick to in the 7/32 size.

Amsteel blue is a 12 strand single braids made by Sampson from Dyneema fibers, I believe SK65. I use 1/8" for my hammock suspensions. 1/8" has a minimum break strength of 2300lb.

By way of comparison 1/8" galvanized 7x19 steel cable has a minimum break strength of 2000lb. Amsteel is awesome stuff.

Just remember rope fibers break down faster than chain. Weather, knots, and rubbing on things such as bark weaken and deteriorate it quicker. I have went through a little rope in my life as a Tree Trimmer/Climber. With that said, it'll be fine, just remember to clean and dry it every now and then. You can coil it and throw it in the wash machine and hang dry. Good luck, Good hunt'n, and God Bless ya!

I use 1/4 inch on everything - I do replace it on my sticks every year - saddles and stands every 2-3 years just depends on wear. Yes it frays but it still is strong even when completed frayed up as the core fibers are still unfrayed.
