What is your favorite backyard 3D target considering price and durability?

From: Turkeyman

I like the GlenDel Targets.

Old beer cans I shoot with flu flus

Rinehart has a new 'Woodland Boar' that is fairly cheap, decent size and the core can be replaced. We used one at a recent 3D shoot and it looked fine after nearly 200 shots.

I would not use just a 3D without a cube or block target for sighting, form work etc. Unless I was made of money ;-)

DanaC just checked it out. Not a bad looking target,

From: DanaC

Very deceptive on a 3D course, some high-level wheelbow guys actually mistook it for the 'Hogzilla' target and really blew their yardage estimates ;-) Others took it for the regular boar target and were off somewhat also. Lots of fun for about $120

Yes I agree for 120 can't beat it.

Hadn't thought of shrink wrap as a target for a very long time. I used to go around town scavenging old shrink wrap, and then stuff it into large burlap bags and crudely sew them up. Awesome targets for a couple of bucks.

I am going to check out that Rineheart Boar too.

HH How about some instructions for the 3D targets. I have only used shrink wrap to stuff feed sacks. Thanks guys,>>>----> Ken

At the house. Best 3d there is.

I can buy a big bale from the neighbor for about $20.00 and it lasts three years of constant shooting. Other than that I shoot at stumps.

I mix it up. I use bag targets, 3D targets, and stump shoot. I like the bag targets and 3D targets because they can be moved around to different positions and angles. Keeps me from getting bored. My favorite 3D target is a McKenzie deer target I've had a long time that I keep patching up.

This is the only one I use. I like it because I can move it anywhere I want. Last years target I use for shooting in my broadheads.

The question was about 3-D targets. We all have bags and bales and know their benefits.

My favorite 3-D's are the throw aways from archery clubs. The compounders whine when they can't see their blessed scoring rings so they get tossed. Currently, I have a boar and a strutting turkey. I once had a mid section from a mt goat, it lasted many years.

From: DanaC
Date: 15-Oct-18

Yeah, cores that are not 'competition' quality may still have a lot of life left in them. Make good stumping targets too.

A bale is 3D Dave. ;)

From: Nemophilist
Date: 15-Oct-18

If bales are 3D then bags and stumps are to. "LOL"

From: George D. Stout Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 15-Oct-18

Yessir, that be true.

From: Red Beastmaster
Date: 15-Oct-18

But there's no scoring rings on a bale or stump. Why shoot at something if you can't win a trophy?

I actually heard that during a meeting at the local club.

I believe it Dave. Funny how some folks think.

Rhinehart But there pricey as all get out Mama got me a Glen Del for Christmas and it’s nice target for the money Doesn’t put up with the 11/32 and 23/64 woodies like a Rhinehart But for under $200 instead of round $500 well worth the price to play

From: George D. Stout Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

"Critters have no rings." No, but they have a vital area that needs to be hit, just like any other target....and half-assed shooting won't get it done.

From: George D. Stout Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 15-Oct-18

H.H., yeah....I don't even know where they put most rings on 3D targets anyway, so when I do shoot them, I shoot to kill the animal. That doesn't always align with the rings...but is usually close.

I have or have shot almost every entry level target out there. The best quality target I think i have Is the Yo Buddy Turkey I picked up at a outdoor store that was going out of business. It’s light enough to haul around but doesn’t shift when you hit it. It can be a little hard to pull your arrows out at first, but I’ve had it for a year, and there is no missing spots. My favorite part is the handle on top, my brother and I throw a rope over a low limb and make a swinging target out of it. Talk about some lost arrows lol.

There is also a antelope target on cabelas website for $160. Hadn’t tried but I’d like to know if it’s any good. Anybody used it?

$6 turkey decoy. Filled with newspaper and then a $3 can of expanding foam.

Laserman, can you post a photo of the turkey decoy done that way? I have thought about doing that, but was concerned the foam might distort the shape.

Thanks for the input everyone. I love the cheap 3D targets for broadheads sight picture this time of year, but they don't last long.

Cant beat Rinehart foam. I have one of their 3D deer. In a size that matches the average body size of deer on my area. Practicing on what you are hunting is a big plus in my humble opinion.

1). I use a bale of hay ( straw). Use two nylon strap ratcheted tightened, and compress the bale. I used 3 pieces of leftover synthetic rope along the major axis of the bale, tighten. Then remove the strap-ratchets. Put the compressed bale in a heavy duty trash bag ( ie 55 gal drum liner), use some packing tape to tighten up the saggy bag. It’s good for a year for me. Bale of straw costs $3 from a horse owning neighbor.

2). Cardboard box of your size. Stuff with plastic wrap ( shrink wrap from pallets, old dog food bags etc). Tape box closed. Put it ina heavy duty plastic bag, and tape the fat to fit snugly. I put legs on the box with old arrow shafts, or ~1/2” thick branches. Poke /cut a hole the a bottom corner, and poke the stick until it is diagonal across to the opposite top corner. Keeps the box off the ground. Cost is for tape and a large lawn bag. Very durable. Can’t get any lower cost.
