I have been making my flemish strings four my longbows with 16 strands of d97. My bows are 47-50#. What stand count would you guys suggest for this set up. All my bows have phenolic reinforced tips

You don't need more than 12 strands in the body, you can put sixteen in the loops for a little more padding if you want. You could tow a boat with 16 strands of D97.

Yes Sir 12 is plenty. For my personal bows I only use 12 with B 55. I will got to 14 for other folks. >>>-----> Ken

I shoot 8 strands of BCY D-10 up to 59# and 10 strands for 60# and up. I do remember from my Black Widow days that their 14 strands of D97 was like a winch cable compared to what I was making from Ultra-Cam.

If you get good nock fit there is nothing wrong with 16 if that is what you want to use, defiantly a strong string. I use for that weight bow I use a 12 strand using 0.24 serving material, heavier bow up into the 70# plus range 14 strand using 0.21 serving. I pad using two strands of B50 per bundle end. You could go even to a lower strand count as mentioned, you may need to go to a larger serving diameter than 0.24 to get a good arrow nock fit, depending on what kind of arrow nock you are using. How much speed you will pick up from what you are using, "Maybe" 2-3fps. DANNY

A 12 strand D97 is strong enough for a 100# bow,I shot a 12 strand D97 on my Dan Quillian Bamboo longhunter at 83#.

You seem to be the odd man out hereā¦ Just wondering why your preference is for the higher count?

14 is good, serving diameter is more concern for proper nock fit.
I run 20 strands of X with 21 thou serving.
On 12 strand D-97 I ran 26 thou serving.

First reason is nock fit. I don't like bothering with padding loops or stocking multiple serving sizes.
14 strands + #4 Nylon = a small groove G nock or 1/4 - 9/32" glue on nock.
16 strands ((>45/50#) + #4 Nylon = large groove G nock or 5/16" Glue on.
I also shoot more arrows at longer distances than most here, and string stability can become a factor. D97, is one of the softer of the newer materials. A few extra strands, helps more than hurts across the board in IMHO.

In fact, 14 is as low as I go, regardless of the draw weight.

Fewer strands will also stretch more. I really doubt there is much to be gained with fewer strands.
