Very cool!

Rick.....that is one of the coolest shots I've seen in a while.

From: GF
Date: 11-Oct-18

How did you build that bottle bomb??

We have GOT to have one of those at our next Trad shoot!

I gotta say, Rick... I don’t know if I’m more impressed by the shooting, or by how fast you can walk!

From: cobra
Date: 11-Oct-18

That is beyond impressive

From: Rick Barbee

I'm not going to lie. I practiced this shot on an empty uncharged bottle for 3 afternoons about an hour each. I had a lot of misses, but they were near misses, and I beat the snot out of that bottle on a lot of the shots, but could not puncture it due to the field point shoulders, and the angle the arrows were coming in. The bottle is just to light weight to keep from pushing away.

I'm pretty good at holding a vertical line, and have always been good at envisioning an imaginary spot to shoot at.

Once I figured out the particulars (including using different points), I knew I could get it done in just a few shots, and even my misses would be close & in the video, so I charged up a new bottle, and gave er a go.

Very cool! So awesome! Thanks for sharing!

When I used my MegaBoom bottle charger a couple years ago (not at 100yds of course!) the arrows were usually destroyed. Even my carbons. :(

I guess I've gotta try it again! I forgot how fun it was seeing and hearing the explosions! Keeps my neighbors on their toes too!

Awesome shooting !

Too bad arrows don’t go fast enough to detonate tannerite. :^)

Rick,great vid.

From: David McLendon

What was in that bottle???

From: Rick Barbee
Date: 11-Oct-18

GF, that was a 2 liter coke bottle with blue pop line chalk, and 90 PSI of air pressure in it.

Makes a nice little pop when you puncture it. 8^)

So how did you pressurize it? Looks like maybe a valve stem anchored in the bottle cap?

From: Rick Barbee

@ GF - Yep, valve stem in the cap.

I won one of those gizmo's at a shoot about 4 years ago but a little hesitant on using it. I know they make a loud noise when the bottle is struck.

That's Purdy slick Rick. Was wondering what target you had in mind when you cut out for a 100 yard. Wouldn't guessed that in a million years !

From: cobra
Date: 12-Oct-18

I might be able to make the shot. Heres the problem: No way I could see that bottle at 100 yds upon raising a bow. I would need to have something the size of a trash can hanging from a tree to aim at (off Camera) that corresponded to dropping an arrow into the bottle. You know, a little bigger aiming aid. And, lots of arrows and lots of time, and lots of editing.

From: Ihunts2much

Not sure its ethical to take a 100 yard shot at a bottle, but you killed it clean.;) Nice Shooting!

Slick trick Rick! Fun, breaks up the monotony. And you get to here it go BANG!

From: carter
Date: 12-Oct-18

Should also warn if your not going to do this at home, then definatly don't use a can of electronics duster and spray into a bottle with the can upside down for a few seconds cap the bottle and as that super cold gas warms up the bottle will become very pressurized. for sure don't do something like that

From: MCNSC
Date: 12-Oct-18

Heck I’d be afraid to pump up a bottle to 90 lbs after seeing that! Course I’m getting a little soft these days. Great shot and video. Enjoyed it.

From: GF
Date: 12-Oct-18

I just wanna know how to install the stem. Thinking I might be able to glue in a valve from a bicycle tube.

But I might just dial down the PSI to where it’s less likely to blow up my arrow..

There has been a few folks asking just exactly how I aimed for this shot.

In this picture, the blue dot represents the level the bottle was setting in my vision, and the green dot represents where I was looking, and pointing/aiming the arrow. Yep, way up there.

Like I said in an earlier post, I practiced the shot on three different afternoons for about one hour each.

On the first afternoon I tried several different aiming methods:
I started with Gaping off the riser, and switched my 3 under hold anchor from index finger at corner of mouth to an under the chin anchor, and even shot split finger that way some.

It didn't take me long (first afternoon) to realize I was most confident, comfortable, and consistently accurate with my normal 3 under hold, and anchoring index finger at the corner of my mouth/nose on the fletch, and simply aiming with the arrow tip, and aiming it high.

At that point it was only a matter of figuring out how high to hold, and practice steadily holding that vertical line at that height.

There's nothing to reference in that sky, so it all boiled down to seeing the vertical line in my imagination, and seeing an imaginary spot in the sky to aim at along that vertical line.

It was fun (very fun) to do from the start of the practicing/learning all the way to the conclusion. I can tell already, that my shooting has improved at the closer distances a little bit.

Don’t know for sure how Rick did this, but there is a gizmo sold for about 25 or 30 bucks that uses a bike tire pump to pressurize a bottle like this. But I think the bottle remains attached to the gizmo.

you can easily drill a hole in the cap of a 2 liter and pull a valve stem thru it. (videos on you tube) Pump bottle to 90 PSI and shoot

Recommend tying a string to the valve stem so you can find it after the boom. Have fun

From: Ken Williams
Date: 14-Oct-18

And please wear safety glasses while pumping up bottle !

From: Renewed Archer
Date: 14-Oct-18

That's inspiring, Rick. I've been trying to figure out how to aim at longer distances. When I raise the bow the arrow obscures the point I'm aiming at, so I can't focus on the spot I'm trying to hit. I tried canting the bow a lot and holding it lower, that helped some but still not a good solution. I think you showed me what to do. Don't try to focus on the target, focus on a spot above it!

Thanks.

That's some very impressive shooting Rick! I'm not even sure I'd be able to see a small bottle 100 yards away lol. Good stuff, enjoyed the video!

After losing my youtube account, I no longer had this video hosted online anywhere.

A few days ago I had several requests to resurrect it here, so he it is.

Enjoy.

I'm anxious to do it again with my new super hook limbs when I get them here.

Rick

From: Corax_latrans

I should get/whip up one of those pressurization thingies… seems like it oughtta be possible to make one from a bike tube and a little silicone caulk/adhesive…. Or maybe that’s already in this thread and I’m remembering what I read but not recalling where I read it. That seems to happen to me pretty regularly….

I’m not sure I have a place to stand that’s 100, but I can definitely get to 80.

Don’t imagine I’ll get there in as few shots, but it seems like I oughtta be able to connect within the first dozen….

Ends….

Of however many arrows I can stuff into the quiver….

From: Corax_latrans
Date: 07-May-22

OK, yup. I definitely heard it here first…

[[[ Odd how the arrow stopped right there. ]]]

Only thing I can figure is the concussion from the explosion stole any trajectory it had left in it.

Did you notice how it wrinkled up the vanes? They were straight & smooth before the shot.

Rick
