While moving mom out of her house (lived there since 1946) I came across some of dad’s Do It Yourself books. Here, in Popular Mechanics paperbound 1948 issue are a few helpful nuggets. Enjoy, and be sure to nail your homemade arrow rest on that classic bow.

1948 was the year I built my first bow.

I have about 7 of the old Popular Mechanics, prewar and through WWII. The amount of interesting articles in each issue is astounding. Always thorough and enough so you could duplicate whatever they presented. Reading recent issues is a disappointment, they have opted to give a weblike overview. I pick those up when I can find them. Often they will also include old Archery Ads

Well, up till now, I bet we all thought that neatly drilled holes in the risers of countless bows was primitive and unspeakable. I did shoot a very old longbow last week (no shelf). Shot a feathered arrow off my bowhand forefinger and relived the dreaded bleeding hand with feather quills. Funny how some things take you back..

Ron ... I think in today's parlance "Camp Archery Association" has a whole new meaning

I am amazed at the lasting ignorance about feather cuts. Saxton Pope gave the prevention in Hunting with the Bow and Arrow in (was it 1929?)
Taper the quill at the front and add a drop of glue. No cuts, ever. No rest needed.

Great post here--- no whining, chest beating or bragging. Just some neat old stuff.

LOL, I still have a vivid recollection of half a feather going into my bow hand shooting off the hand years ago.
