I'm making a new 12-strand B50 string for a 5o# ASL. Was going to make it 14/12... 2 extra strands of B50 in each loop. Does anyone have an opinion on reasons to, or not to, pad 12 to 14 (other than for filling nock) in this case? Thank you.

I don't see the need for padding 12 strands of B50, but it won't hurt anything, so do it if it will make you more confident in/feel better about the string on the bow.

If I were you, I'd do 9 strands and pad to 12 or 15. Faster string. But you'll need 0.026 serving for good nock fit.

10 strands of b55 with no pads works good for me, and has 25% less stretch than b50.

String Loop padding didn't start till High Performance String Material started being used. To increase the diameter of the loop for a larger load bearing surface. 18 strand Brownell Fast Flight made a string diameter about the same as aa 12-13 strand B50, you need to use 0.24-0.25 serving material to get a good nock fit for 11/32 nocks, so it is pretty thin material. We (Traditional shooters as a whole) were shooting pretty heavy bows when it came out and limb tips weren't reinforced with micarta then. Fast flight with its lack of stretch compared to B50 needed the loop diameter increased. This was done to reduce potential limb tip shear, or the string pulling through the limbs if strings were made with even fewer strands, if shooting light weight arrows, or a dry fire situation. Prior to that "as far as I know" string loops were never padded using B50, no matter how many strand. Now it seems because the High Performance Material strings need padded, many think EVERYTHING needs padded. I do have a few spools of an old High Performance Material that I don't pad, 12 strands of it makes a string as thick, or maybe slightly thicker than a 16 strand B50. I use 0.18 serving material on it (same as I use on B50) for a 11/32 nock, it is S4. "I think" that material is a little thicker per strand than D97 is. I have had Dry Fire situations on my 60#@28" Martin Hatfield my draw is 30 inches and no problem using that material. DANNY

I shoot 12 strand d97 out of all my bows up to 58lb with no padding. I've been shooting them for years with no problems.

Padded loops on all my skinny strings I get done. I have some 6 strands but really like 8 and no more than 10. Fast on any bow young or old she boogies.

You will make any old bow run like on CBD oil. LOL
