Here it is, my first bow-kill deer! It's a 4x1 mule deer, killed on the Book Cliffs in Utah. I'm pretty excited, it's so tough to get a shot on these things....shot him with my Wes Wallace Mentor, 57 lb at my draw, 2317 arrow (old autumn orange!), Bear super razorhead. Arrow entered in the rear of the abdomen, exited on the other side of the deer through the chest, complete pass-through on a buck quartering away at a 45 deg. angle or so.... amazing.

Getting ready for the pack-out, the buck all quartered and ready to go (not that far to my ATV really.....). Right side is a rather crabby 4-points (at least by Book Cliffs standards), the left side is a freakish single prong that terminates in three wicked-looking points, sort-of like an evil wizard's staff. By the looks of the antlers, it must have just rubbed a day or two ago, there was some velvet scraps still hanging on one of the bases.... should make a neat Euro mount!

David, way to go man! Congratulations. That is an outstanding buck, it sounds like you had that Razorhead scary sharp. Give me a call when you can. I want to hear the full story. I am proud that you had the Wallace with you, that made it even more special.

Talk soon. God Bless.

Here's some pics of the country I was in - we are maybe 50 to 80 miles north of Moab. We are in the mountains, but still relatively dry up here. There are pines and aspens in some of the steeper canyons, but up on top or where exposed it's mostly sage brush or junipers. A bit hot during the day.

This is the pond I was sitting on - a man-made pond used to water cattle, but of course the wildlife comes in to drink too. One night I saw a coyote come charging in while some does and fawns and a small buck was drinking - the deer panicked and ran in all directions, until one doe stopped and realized it was bigger than the coyote, and then the doe chased the coyote away! That was fun to watch... another night, a badger came in... the deer did not like that one bit, but the badger ignored the deer....

In the canyons, a bit more 'forested'. Although, the deer tended to the more open country when feeding. In the pine canyons, that is where you found the elk.... I did miss a shot at a spike, heartbreaking....

Pack is a Mystery Ranch 'Crew Cab'

FYI, I've been shooting a recurve since 1980, bowhunted causally in California with no success, moved to Utah in 2006 and been bowhunting seriously for deer since then - my 12th season trying to get a deer with a recurve, and it finally happened.... wow, I thought I was going to go to my grave without getting a deer with a recurve! Just can't give up..... got to keep trying....

David, you say he should make a nice Euro mount. While I agree, I also think he could make a fine traditional mount as well. Most folks tend to mount only the very symmetrical looking racks. I prefer the ones like this buck which are unusual. Those kinds of mounts are the ones that stick out in my mind. Whatever you do, congratulations on your buck!
