The Paul Schafer book that has been carefully crafted by Bob Windauer is close to being finished. The text is done and Bob is working diligently on the cover along with other images that are being integrated throughout the book. Bob gave me the green light to share this update just this morning and I can tell you the Schafer book will be well worth the wait. I have had the opportunity to read through it, it's truly an amazing read. Bob has done an incredible job writing this book, stand by for a release date!

WOW !! Can't wait till I can buy it!

Who gets the proceeds?

From: BigOzzie
Date: 10-Sep-18

Assuming it is self published, there won't be much for proceeds, from what I hear that is an expensive process.

(nothing implied) I didnt know if he has family etc participating.Yes you are right-probably not a big money maker.

Online publishing is actually cheaper, depending on what you want as a final product. Be good to see the content of that book and who all contributed to it. I know the Wensel guys hunted with Paul and knew him well. I'll be watching to see the reviews.

Looking forward to it

looking forward to this, count me in fer a copy...

As for proceeds I would hope they can at least cover their expenses. As we all know this is a niche market at best.

I'm looking forward to it.

Yes count me in. I have one of the last bows he completed. Love it. I remember hearing about him as a kid. This is awesome that a book will be coming out

Been waiting for a long time on this one.

I spent a couple hour listening to the Wensels during an afternoon where I should have been chasing pigs during one of their pig gigs. They told me some incredible stories about Paul and other some other well known bowhunters. Some of those stories about Paul will never make it to any books. Nothing bad really, just some some stories about his nature.

Is Bob Windauer David's brother. I had a longbow made by Dave that was 62 inches long. Dave never made a 62 inch longbow except for one time someone talked him into making about a half dozen. Dave is a very accomplished longbow builder.

Wanted to take this thread to the top with another update! I spoke to Bob Windauer this evening and he informed me that the Paul Schafer book is near completion. The cover has been carefully designed and images have been placed throughout the book of Paul and many of his hunts.

I fully expect the book to be available in the next month or two. Check back here for the release date and links to where it can be purchased.

I created a Schafer SIlvertip Fan Club page on facebook a few years ago, it's a page filled with SIlvertip owners that have shared their hunting stories while hunting with a SIlvertip bow. Updates and links will also be posted there. Here is a link, copy and paste into your browser. https://www.facebook.com/groups/965825693508855/

looks like a good read, so I am going to get a book since I love books,,, what about his friend Bart,,, how could you disappear from this world penniless, from what this guy had going for him, and the world he was allowed to live in.....

I only say this from what I have read about the guy, with all the advantages that guy had, and his degrees, and I look at myself, that was on his own at 15, and what it took me to get thru school and beyond.....

something wrong there

Ground Hunter, are you referring to Bart or Paul? Either way, not sure what you’re getting at.

Not sure what number order I am but looking forward to reading the book. Should be a great read.

From: Nemophilist

md5252, I believe ground hunter is refering to Bart Schleyer.

The book is great, does anyone know if the footage for any of Paul's hunts is still available?

From: Bowlim

Not that unusual, particularly not for the post war generation, the boomers. Anyone remember Hippies? Often people to whom a lot is given search out the things that are not given. So if you are alone in the world at 15, you strive for success, academic and/or financial. There are always those born with a silver spoon in their mouths who try for the opposite lifestyle out of challenge or attraction.

The fact he hunted Africa as a teen could also be part of it. I know a few people who had major adventures as teens like sailing around the world, who never managed to pick up regular lives. Like people who fight in wars and find regular life is too ordinary. If you read adventure stories post WWII. Survivors attempt all kinds of loony things. My favorite for nuttyness were these guys who drove around the world in an amphibious jeep. The Jeep wasn't really up to the ocean crossings so they built a superstructure on the jeep which almost had them baked to death in the middle east. There was a lot of restlessness at that time.

You can't be a full time adventurer and also be deep in a career, though career is adventure enough for many.

On the negative, there are also people who throw themselves deeply into certain activities, because they left conventional success too late, and they have no choice but some kind of sideline most never pursue. I guess that can be the "something wrong" part, along with even worse alternatives.

At my stage in life, I can only dream of going to and living in some of the places Paul and Bart did.

I truly am regretful that I was not able to meet Mr. Schafer. Just finished "Silvertip" and this book has effected me more than any that I can remember. Like many I have read some of the articles, and tributes over the years, but this book is an exceptional remembrance of the man and a life well lived.
