Hey guy's, got a new to me Super Diablo from Trout Outdoors in Newton Pennsylvania, owned by Ken and i dont remember his last name but a great guy to deal with. Anyhow I have been researching it and I believe it was made in the late 80s to early 90s? Also i think it was made for Gander Mountain to sell? Any help and nore info would be mmuch appreciated.

Grizbow:::I bought a Damon Howatt Super Diablo at the Gander Mountain Store in Gander Mountain, Wisconsin sometime in the early 90's.Both riser and limbs were zebrawood. It was 60" 60#@28. ser# ESD 4297

Hey Duker, i meant to post a picture of the bow to lol i wonder does the 4297 on your bow and 9153 on mine denote their production number? Mine has a zebrawood riser and i don't think the limbs are zwbrawood, they don't look the same to me

Those are good looking bows. I remember the first time I shot mine. It is a very comfortable forgiving bow to shoot. And, it seems to me, sends a heavy arrow with a resounding THWAACK!

Yessir, it shoots really really well and im not just saying that. My favorite thing about it is the grip, fits me so well i wanted it on the spot

Nice find Grizbow! Ken Trout is a super good guy to deal with. Nice shop with lots of goodies for the traditional bowhunter. Makes some of the best strings around. Shop is in West Newton, PA. I can only dream of shooting 65# but you got a sweet one. Best of luck this season! Scott <')))><

Zebra SD were made early '80s until '94 if I am remembering right. I have one as well and it is a sweet shooter. Mine sends a 590 gr arrow with 172fps average. For a B50 string and 30years old bow is quite respectable.

That’s a really nice lookin bow

They weren't made for Gander Mountain. That was a staple in the DH line.

From: Grizbow
Date: 01-Sep-18

Huh, i saw pn another forum that they had made some for Gander Mountain. I believe they were ordered for them but yes i know that they were a staple in Damom Howatt

From: fdp

They may have made some for Gander at some point, but I don't know what would have been different about them. That Zebrawood Super D is a very sough after bow.

Larry Hatfield or PDiddly can tell us for sure.

Yea i wouldn't know im just curious about it more so now lol hopefully one of those guys will let us know

Grizbow...it's a 1989 Super Diablo, as is Draven's. Duker's is a 1994.

They weren't made for GM...the zebrawood riser with the laminated maple actionwood insert was the design of the SD from 1985 to 1994.

As of 1972 the first number in the serial digits of any Howatt is the year the bow was built. The numbers that follow the build year are the number of bows built by model. So yours was the 153rd SD made in 1989 and Draven's was the 241st.

Here's my 1991...

In 1995 the Super Diablo looked like this.

ESD stands for Eldorado Super Diablo. Eldorado was a line of bows that also included the Palomar, Catalina, Monterey and Grenada. The "Mamba" and "Deluxe" were other lines.

The Super Diablo evolved from the plain Diablo that was first made in 1958 and continued to 1963. In 1966 Larry designed and made the first Super Diablo's. The SD was produced until the Dreamcatcher succeeded it.

Trout Outdoors is a great traditional archery shop, And Ken is a great guy. He really takes the time, and listens to ya. I get all of my strings from him now. Great strings at a great price. I hope he is there for many more years.

Thanks for the detailed response Pdiddly, so you determine my bow, your's, Draven's and Dukers by the maple actionwood insert and zebrawood riser for the years it was built, along with the serial number to tell it's number off the factory floor. How do you find out bows built from other years say 1980 to 84 just with other riser wood combos? and knowing the years they were built? Thanks!!

From: Pdiddly
Date: 02-Sep-18

Grizbow...that is right. From 1972 on you need to know the wood combinations in the riser for each model.

That information was provided by Larry Hatfield's descriptions of when each model was made and the wood being used. That is the key.

Pre-1972 is a lot trickier as there were certain letters and numbers that designated various types of info...that is what took quite a bit of figuring out but myself and a few other curious sorts finally figured it out.

Very cool thanks Pdiddly, i was just thinking i wish there was a book out like Jorge Coppens for Howatts as well as Bear archery lol. Thank you for the answers!!

There’s just nothin’ like a young man with an old dog...

Too bad I can’t tell you that an old fart like you has no business shooting #65 and that you should send it to me so it won’t die of neglect!

From: Grizbow
Date: 17-Oct-18

Lol oh it might get worn out before it dies of neglect, that dogs name was Stella and she was awesome!!
