I teach, so once I did a lesson of scents. Deer can awake and process seven different smells with in a fraction of a second. Such amazing abilities. So, they sleep for fours, wake, eat and keep intestinal biofauna alive, and sleep again.

Joe drives fast he drives over them when they are asleep I think too.

I thought I would address this, before someone else did. YES, they do sleep, BUT...........don't even THINK you can slip up on one while they are doing it!!!!!

Earlier. This year I seen some deer sprawled out on the ground with head down and feet sticking out like a dog, mean while some was bedded and some more were standing. Really caught me of guard, but was nice seeing them.

This doe has been around here for 3 or 4 years. She has fawns every year. She will touch her nose to my hand at times and she ignores my dog. Of course, her name is Floppy.

There are few things as challenging for me as stalking a bedded mule deer buck. If you count a kill as success, mine is exactly zero. The last four-point I worked did sleep, but fitfully. He would stand up about every 40 minutes or so, look around, then lay down and sleep on his side at the base of a pine. He went from dozing to a dead run in one second when a dry huckleberry branch snapped the longbow when crawling forward. Just once you would think one would stand up broadside and look the other way for a few seconds. Just once.

Yes they do. Slipped up on one like Raghorn's photo to within 10 yards but didn't have a tag for the area. Stood and watched her and then rustled the leaves. She took off in high gear when she saw me.

Yes, and if it's during the rut or during gun season when they are being pushed a lot they can sleep very soundly. My brother walked up on a very large buck in the snow during gun season years back. He thought it was already dead until he finally saw an ear twitch. He shot it and it was one of the largest bucks he ever got, all while it slept.

Everything sleeps, even sharks they go catatonic and glide to keep water flowing over there gills. Deer sleep several hours a day.

I've put a few deer into a real deep sleep.

The deer that I talked to said he could process 8 different smells, unless his allergies were acting up.

They also dream, just like when a dog lays on his side sound asleep and his feet are twitching like he's running, I suppose he's dreaming of chasing a rabbit. One of my friends had a nice buck (but not a shooter) lay down on his side right under the treestand. It closed its eyes and the feet were twitching just like a sleeping dog. This was during the heat of the rut so I assume he was dreaming of chasing does. He was totally out for a few minutes, then snapped awake, jumped up and started cruising for does again. Interesting critters. bw

I had a yearling whitetail doe bed under my treestand one time on a beautiful, warm October afternoon. She had he head down, eyes closed and she was even snoring a bit. I envied her!!!

I've found their beds in the grass several times. Never seen one in one, though.

Little story... The deer in my area get heavy, heavy pressure during our annual week long statewide firearm season. Most places they run from one land/farm and groups of hunters to another back and forth or keep running until they are no longer shot at... Anyhow one year was group hunting with buddies and on Thursday, after 4 days of gun pressure I happened to be on stand and above me I hear one of my driver buddies say over to another driver, "Hey, there's a doe laying here"... "Is it dead, no it's breathing" The loud conversation goes on for a couple minutes until finally my buddy standing a few feet away walks over and nudges her rump... Up pops her wide eyed head and zoom, busted up and exploded out of there gone... What a hoot, we laughed about it for days...8^)

She must have been so exhausted that she was in a deep deep sleep...
