I need advice for repairing a friend's bow. I've shrunk the picture until it's really small but still get the internal server error message. It's the top glass lamination on the back of the limb coming loose for an inch or so where it meets with the riser. Looks like a clean separation. Any advice will be appreciated. Wish I could post the picture.

Thanks

Open the separation a bit, blow out any dust, pieces of wood etc with compresed air. Apply epoxy into seperated area. Clamp enough to bring glass and wood together but not too much or all the glue will squeeze out and you end up with a starved joint. Wait a couple days, then clean up and apply finish as needed.

Tape off the area with painter tape. Save yourself a TON of finicky clean up work.

That's fixable, you just need to make sure everything (surfaces) get coated well with glue. Maybe use some gentle pressure and see if it wants to loosen any further before cleaning and gluing.

Thank you for the advice.

You MIGHT get that to hold...or not. I'm guessing that since that bow was probably glued up with Smoot-On, there is a dry glue joint there. Is that the glass that runs in t the limbs?

That looks like it is in the overlay of the riser. There is no flexing there, so the only real explanation is a dry glue joint. I'm guessing you can probably pop that lamination off with little effort.

It's not an overlay, it's a limb lamination.

Then it is on the belly side it appears.

If the lamination doesn't seem to be loose, then tape up the wood areas to keep them clean as suggested.

Take some good epoxy (Smoot-On, T-88, G-2, West Systems, something of that type) and aplly the epoxy to both the lamination, and the wooden core. Work in as much as you can up close to the area that is coming loose. You'll have to use something very thin. Too much glue won't hurt.

When you get the glue in place, apply a couple of spring clamps. Wipe ofd the excess glue, and let it dry for at least 24 hours. Then remove the clamps, start cleaning it up if you want to, but let it sit another 24 hours before you string it.
