I have made a commitment to a year on the ground. I have had good success in the past but keep climbing the trees. Thinking of a Waldrop Pac Seat. Any opinions on your experience?

I am an opportunist and take advantage of 'blinds' I find naturally. I shot at and missed a 6 pt from behind this rootwad last fall. Grunted him in to 18 yds, but deflected an arrow off an unseen twig. I have had good success at this kind of hunting - finding natural stands and calling in bucks. Its way more fun than waiting in a tree and shivering...to me anyway.

With the Pac Seat or with ground hunting in general?

I hunt from the ground about 100% of the time. As far as ground hunting there are pros and cons (but its funner IMO and much easier not to hang a stand or carry a climber for me )

In a tree you can see for a ways, on the ground a deer will appear in front of you like a ghost.

As far as a seat , try and get something comfortable. When you're uncomfortable you'll move around more.

When ground hunting try and keep the sun to your back for your set up.

Ive not used the seat you mentioned but have heard good things.

Been on the ground now since the mid 1980's. I don't carry a seat all the time since I want that ability to move quickly if needed. I don't think moving around is a disadvantage and is actually one reason I got out of the trees. Yes, normally you won't get as much shooting opportunity but that's part of the challenge that people propose they took up traditional archery for..at least that's what most say.

The biggest challenge it just letting the stands at home and getting past the notion that you have to kill something every time you go out. You'll never learn to be a good 'ground hunter' if you don't hunt from the ground.

Well I do a lot of ground hunting. I build a lot of natural blinds in the post season, its a lot of fun, and some I never get back to use.

I tried the WalDrop chair, it is nicely made, but not for me, too hard to shoot out of for me.............

I have never found the perfect chair, because some are still too heavy, to be effective, for the long hauls, but there have been a few threads just on the chairs.....

I love pit blinds, and old root wads, you can dig out some nice ones there............

There are times I will use a guile, but only put the top on, and only after I am set up.

again, I ground hunt a lot, but only if it is the most effective means,,,, depends on the situation

as advised prior, movement is your killer to your set up.....

I go in as light as possible, I bring nothing I will not use, I am not going on a camping trip I am going to hunt deer for a few hours............

I'd like to hear more on the Waldrop Pac Seat from them who use it. I may up grade from my camo five gallon bucket swivel seat.

I like a hammock seat for ground hunting. Doesn't work in every situation. Need a tree to attach it to, but very quick and easy to set up and very quiet (after broken in) and comfortable in use.

I like the idea of groundhunter seat that Big Jim sells. You need to have a tree to lean against, but you arent real low to the ground. Also there is room to move your legs. I agree there is no perfect seat out there.

Like bows,arrows,camo and broadheads...its a personal choice.

I have tried different seats including the hammock. So far my favorite, just hard to get out of for shots to my right. The Big Jim's is a good idea but even with a good cushion taped on, I just don't have enough meat on my butt for that seat.

I have killed several deer from the ground and out of a Waldrop pacseAt. The seat is very comfortable and easily transportable- and no tree necessary- it can stand on its own. Is it the “perfect” chair? To me is, but it’s not for everybody. I rarely go on a hunting/camping/whatever trip without it.

I have one of those NWTF vests with a padded seat cushion strapped onto the back, and I use it when I sit down to snack on lunch. You just unsnap the couplers on each side and it remains zippered to the bottom of the vest pouch, and sit on a rock or log, stump, etc. I only use it when its wet out or snowy. I rarely sit when actually hunting anyway, so mostly it remains attached. This reason is this: I was sitting flat on my can with my bow over my lap while calling at a bull in the buffer zone in YNP once. He wasn't really being responsive, or so I thought so I remained seated. Then I mewed once more, and all of a sudden, there ran up and stopped a decent but young 6x6, 15 ft in front of me, broadside. I was helpless, could not get my bow into position for a shot since I was sitting down. It was like I was sitting on steps too, but roots and a drop off. I slowly started to position my bow for a shot and he bolted off. I will NEVER again be seated again when actually hunting because of that day. Sorry, got no experience with a Waldrop seat.

And myself, just after the deer fell. I arrowed a spike as he quartered past me. The shot was good, he bolted away from me, then turned and walked right back. He fell less than 5 feet from where he met the arrow. Ground hunting is a lot more exiting to me. That pacseAt is quality piece of equipment!

I'd possibly give this one a try, esp if it pivots 360 degrees. More than likely just leave it out in my brush stand if I wanted to try it out some morning for a spell...not tote it around.

The seat I've used for quite a few years when hunting from the ground. My camo bucket seat with a padded top that spins around 360 degrees. I'll have to check out them Waldrop Pac Seats.

I only bow hunt from the ground and 3 of my natural setups I can use my Torges seat.

Don't know about the seat you mentioned, but I have used a nif-t-seat for years. Best thing I ever used.

I bought two for christmas. LOVE IT! So good I am leaving my folding camp chairs and pack frame at hoem for my upcoming elk hunt. I will use it as a stool in camp. Carry it around with my day pack so I can sit comfortably during meals and anywhere while glassing, and pack out a full load on th first trip to the truck. I used it in Texas on a movement to contact hog hunt and now I do not even remember how I lived without it. I have had a BUNCH of offers to buy it. I recommend you buy two, just in case he quits making them.

This year will use it and my ghillie to hunt areas without a good tree of so steep that treestand are either eye level with deer at 10 yards or so steep downhill there is no ethical shot.

The best purchase item for hunting public land since the climbing treestand IMHO.

I really like my Millennium tree seat. Most comfortable seat I ever used and it's easy to transport and set up. You gotta have a tree to hang it onto though, it's only con.........Nimrod

I use a quality three-legged Walkstool...it is made in Sweden.

They have an accessory that stops the legs from sinking into soft ground.

I can set it up so I am able to lean against a tree...it is super light and very easy to carry in my pack and takes up very little room.

I practice shooting from it sitting down as that is necessary in many cases.

A couple of the natural ground blinds I use my camo bucket seat in.

I have to second the Millennium tree seat. That thing is sooo comfy for a long sit. Yes a tree is needed but you can set it at just the right height for you.

Man was not intended to be perched in trees. If he was, we would have wings. Personally, I just dont enjoy being in a tree. I like trees, just not with me in one. I have not seen any more deer while in a tree than I have while on the ground.

I tried using an original Sabor climber. My son called it 'the widow maker'. the first thing I usually did was to dang near fall off trying to the seat into position. The second thing i did most of the time was throw my back quiver to the ground. The third thing i usually did was pee on my boots while hoping the band strap that was connected to the seat part wouldn't strangle me if I fell off while peeing on my boots. One day when I went into town for lunch some kind person stole my seat part and cut the strap off making it no longer usable. I have killed 49 or 50 Iowa deer, all from the ground, sometimes breaking every stealth rule possible. I have a Huntmor chair, a Grizzly strap on seat, a snap to my belt soft butt pad, and a Nifty Seat. About half the deer I get, I am just sneaking around brush lines along the creeks with the snap on butt pad dangling from my belt. I concentrate on areas away from where others like to hang tree stands. Our deer can pattern hunters better than our hunters can paternity deer.

I've tried a Pacseat. Didn't care for it at all. Sits too low to the ground for me to get out of easily. The Millennium tree seat is amazing. So light you won't feel it's weight. Very quite and easy to shoot out of. Yeah, you need a tree but, where I hunt there are plenty of them around in the right place. Takes 30 seconds or less to set up as high or as low as you need. Only drawback is it's so comfortable you want to fall asleep. :^)

I LOVE my Waldrop, Monkeyball told me about it and he was spot on. Hunting on the ground is fun, I have learned to try and have some big trees in area so when the critters head goes behind the tree, I can make my move. A learning curve cuz you will get close but making your move is difficult.

Took this deer at 12 yards while hiding behind a fallen tree with a big root ball and small holly tree. I was sitting in my Huntmore 360 chair.

First thing I saw was how Big his nose was before his antlers.

I carry a hunters specialties inflatable cushion, very lite, rolls up small can use it on a rock, log or just plain sitting on the ground. I practice regularly with bow horizontal to the ground for when I'm sitting with back to a tree and legs flat.

In over 40 years of bowhunting I've hunted from a tree stand exactly 3 times. Not my thing.

I have been using the millennium chairs for years now. They are by far the most comfortable chair out there.

They rotate silently and break down in to a small easy to carry 3lb package.

It is what we sit on for all those long days at the archery events and what I choose to sit on when ground hunting in Kansas ..day light to dark.

I have all the other seats somewhere, but the millennium free standing chair is the only one I use.. I do occasionally use the tree seat.

Big Jim,,,, what am I missing.... it shows on line that it comes in at 7.5 pounds, and does not look that portable. Looks like a great blind chair, but not for run and gun.....

I quit going into trees years ago. I have hunted not the ground for about 20 years. I make blinds out of what is out there or use existing blinds like root balls etc.

Still looking for a good chair/seat that sits higher than most on the market. Most of the places I hunt do not have trees so a seat/chair that needs a tree isn't an option. Considering a Chama Chair but its a bit pricey.

Stick I just sold a Black Out chair,,,, you might want to check them out,,,, sold thru Bass Pro, redhead line. The chair is 79.00 the legs which there are 3, will adjust from 2 to 19 inches. each leg will adjust and lock in, individually.

The seat has a back, and does swivel 360, and is dead quiet.

The legs have goose feet, to avoid sticking in mud, or being able to level on rocks and loose material

It comes in a carrying case, one strap style. I shot some deer out of it,,,, however it comes in at 8.5lbs, too heavy for me,,,,

I tryed the 3 legged stools. I hate them. Only ok for 5 minutes, then everything below your waist goes numb. I would like to try the Waldrop seat. I found out with the tree seats is you do need to practice pulling your bow because sometimes your elbow will bump the tree. You need to be conscious of the tree behind you.

Another one that's not a fan of 3 legged stools.I use a turkey vest with a thick padded cushion,for my sitting.Plus many pockets and compartments for whatever you want to carry.

I dont hunt alot from the ground but when i do i use The Hunters Seat. Its also sold by Big Jim.

Some of the 3 legged stools made my legs go Numb as well and then I had back surgery and invested in a well built Huntmore 360 seat and can sit from Sun up to sun down and have done it often. I'm certain it isn't the seat for everyone and have heard everything from how much it cost when they were being made to how much it weighs etc But for me I absolutely Love it and My money was well spent and ain't looked back. A buddy of mine had a 3 legged one I sat in while Turkey hunting this year and it had this Big plastic knob you would adjust and with in a 1/2 hour I couldn't stand it no more. Next time I'll make sure my Huntmore go's with me .

76 and bad knees so i use a millenium fold up seat that is absolutely comfortable , swivels 360 and folds up into a nice package to carry in and out! which isn't very far for me! it is a little on the heavy side tho.

I have the Waldrop chair, very comfortable and sets up fast. used mine about 7-8 hunts last year. thinking about selling, going back to my three leg stool, or a pad to sit on. Peter.

Yup, the best hunting seat out there and I have owned most of the big name ones.

I attached a military molle frame including the straps and hip belt for easy transport. Works well for me.

Here's the one I use. The best part is that I don't have to carry it because they are all over the woods!

Yes, but they don't have that nice bum fitting shape very often no can holders.

No swiveling, either and I can never find them in the exact spot I need one!

There ain't anything better to find the game and stalk up to it and shoot it.Biggest sense if achievement I have ever had.It is probably one of the hardest ways to hunt but I just love it.You just have to admire the skill and talent of the natives in the past who regularly did that for their survival.It is really of no consequence to us as we ain't about to starve if we fail.OSR

I have hunted on the ground with both the Huntmore 360 and the Waldrop Pac seat for several years. The Pack Seat is far more versatile. Last year I purchase one of the upgrades that David Waldrop is offering, plus a kit to upgrade my older model. My hunting bud will be using one of mine this season. Try it, you'll like it.

I often will hide cheap three legged stools in the woods I hunt. when I need them Ill get them. saves packing in an out

I like a taller three legged stool, but they are harder to find.When sitting I like my waist higher than my knees

Padded knees are a help as you can kneel at times extra iron-on knee patches are a help (and can be found in camo)

I'm sure some of those seats are very comfortable, but some look like a pain in the a$$ to carry over a long walk. It's nice to be unencumbered with just the bow, arrows and a small pack. No tree seat unless someone goes along to carry it. I hear about how easy it is, but I'm not seeing that in the pictures.

Years ago I made one of the Torges seats and I hated that thing too. Maybe if I made it half the size it would have been okay. May have to carry one though when I get old...knees bitch about every bend nowadays. ;)

I take it that fellows that like to go light are not sitting much. If I'm going to hunt on the ground here in WV I'm at least going to have to sit still . Our deer will not allow you to move around or walk about like a stump shoot. They simply won't tolerate it.

Ground Hunter, I missed the weight. I looked at the site and saw that it is advertised at 8.5 lbs too. I couldn't believe it so I just weighed one thinking ..NO way is 8.5lbs. 4 or 5 maybe, but the scale said 8.5.

Everyone that I have shown them to are amazed by how light they are and how well the pack/port.

I have 7 or 8 of my own now. We have extras for the guys that come and hunt pig blinds. My wife has confiscated one for the front porch of the office and those are the chairs that we sit on all day when doing archery events.

And you would take that wrong Babysaph. Many of my hunts are stillhunts between fallen logs that I've enhanced beforehand with brush/branches to further break up my outline. When and where I go depends on the weather/wind/deer movement/my mood.

I carry as little as absolutely possible. And you can "move still" as well as "sit still". Those who hunt this way will know exactly what I mean.

years ago you didn't have the choices you have now. Many of us "learned" to hunt from the ground.
