September 1-2, 2018 This is a great event that needs more shooters. We have excellent facilities with RV hookups and an air conditioned building with showers. A small group of us usually come a day or 2 early to build bows...

"We have excellent facilities with RV hookups and an air conditioned building with showers. " what are the options if all the RV sites taken? can the sites be reserved?

From: BowAholic
Date: 01-Aug-18

the air conditioned building and showers are available to everyone, but I don't think RV sites are reserved...however I have never seen them full since 2 people can usually use each site as long as one is OK with 110v. I always use the 110v/20A for my truck camper since I never run my air.

looks like we will be having a fun Flight Shoot this year...just bring some 10gpp draw weight arrows...this was a big event at MoJam this year and it should be a great addition to our shoot.

From: Dave Lay Professional Bowhunters Society - Qualified Member Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 03-Aug-18

Bob what day is the flight shoot ?? And what are the requirements ?? Sounds fun

From: BowAholic
Date: 03-Aug-18

we haven't put an exact time on it but I would think we should designate an hour or two that it will be open for shooters. Maybe we need another 'phone conference' LOL. I will help measure the exact draw weight at anyone's preferred draw and they should have arrows that will weigh a minimum of 10 grains per pound of draw for that draw weight. We can easily put a small piece of blue painter's tape around the arrow to mark the draw length so that spotters can watch. We used a broadhead at MoJam that was mounted to act as a stop when it hit the riser...but that was scary. LOL It was an eye opener for lots of guys that found out the draw weight of their bow and/or their personal draw length was not what they thought. :) and it ALWAYS fun to watch arrows fly a long distance!

I’d love to make this shoot! If I make it back from my elk hunt in time I’ll be there

I'm looking forward to it. Several of us will be making bows Thursday and Friday too... I'm pretty sure Jim said he would bring a load of staves.

I saw your bow before he finished it, really nice piece of zebra wood you had.. it made a very nice bow. I’m still shooting one of his from a lot of years ago, they are nice bows for sure

Bob, I'd love to come over and fling arrows with you guys. However, you do know what you scheduled it against, don't you? ;o)

Have a great time. With any luck we'll have some stickbow elk steak at MOJAM in '19

Is Dick Palmer, of Fayetteville, still active in archery?

From: Uncle Lijiah
Date: 08-Aug-18

I remember Mr. Palmer used to be involved with this event.

From: stkbow
Date: 09-Aug-18

Sad to say I haven't asked about Mr Palmer in years,, used to stop and see him from time to time as we traveled to see Debbie's Mother,,, Dick really has a long history in Arkansas archery,, his strength to pull heavy bows far outlasted mine for sure,,

Actually I don't recall he ever visited the Longbow Championship,,, my recall doesn't work as good as it once did so I could be wrong,,

Hey Bob,,, ifigured it out,,,,

From: Uncle Lijiah
Date: 09-Aug-18

I only know Dick Palmer from my occasional visits to his archery shop in Fayetteville, but I haven't been there in along time. I believe he'd be about 84-85 years young, so maybe he's retired by now.

From: BowAholic
Date: 09-Aug-18

well I posted this on the wrong thread... but he is still in business I see... someone PLEASE invite him to the shoot!

Wondering if any of you folks in NW Arkansas could talk to Dick about our Longbow shoot,, I'm betting at 85 he doesn't venture off to far without a friend to help,,, we need to remember our heritage and where it comes from,,, we always need to help a friend in Archery,, particularly the older ones,,, they are what got us here,,

Robert, Roy will be on a cruise that weekend and I am 4 weeks into a new knee, a little soon for me to be walking a course. We had a great time last year and hope to make it again. Bill

From: Uncle Lijiah

Mr. Palmer was/is a bodybuilder and into health foods and natural supplements. He may be like Jack Lalane.

From: stkbow
Date: 09-Aug-18

Hey Bill,, hope the knees goes well,,, is it the left one,,, from holding up them bikes to much.. sure wish you could make it ,,, we really enjoyed seeing you and Roy. Heal quickly,,

we'll miss you 2 Bill... If holding up a Harley requires a new knee... I will be getting one in the future as well. :) Bob

From: Tradarcherychamp

do you have a women's selfbow class?

From: BowAholic
Date: 15-Aug-18

I just cleared it with our president and he says that if 3 or more show up, we will make a class... will that work? :)

From: BowAholic
Date: 16-Aug-18

We have officially prepared for a women's selfbow class in anticipation of contestants. :) It use to be a class but we ended up with only one shooter and so we just had the 'selfbow' class. So...any women that want a chance at becoming the Arkansas State Selfbow Champion... we are ready. !

I'm having trouble posting a picture this morning...lots of rain here... finally! It should be awesome for the shoot.

From: Dave Lay Professional Bowhunters Society - Qualified Member Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

We’re getting closer Bob.. your right this is the wettest August I think I’ve seen in a lot of years

From: BowAholic
Date: 18-Aug-18

and the coolest!

From: BowAholic
Date: 18-Aug-18

I was asked about the picture with the t/d risers in it...that's from a different shoot that we held. This shoot is fashioned after the Texas State longbow shoot and is limited to longbows without massive or weighted risers. Information is on the flyer above.

From: Altek
Date: 18-Aug-18

The rules look very reasonable but some of the 'longbows' leaning against trees in the pics above look to be more 'recurve-like' than the guidelines seem to allow. Is there a recurve division as well?

From: BowAholic
Date: 18-Aug-18

as I said in my last post... :) the pictures are from various shoots that we hold...the longbow shoot has it's own rules and we only shoot longbows that meet the guidelines on the flyer... HOWEVER we have been know to loan bows to anyone that needs one. :)

From: Dave Lay Professional Bowhunters Society - Qualified Member Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 18-Aug-18

I think the blanket shoot is more open to equipment isn’t it Bob? Maybe Stykbow ( Robert) will chime in

From: BowAholic
Date: 19-Aug-18

Since the Blanket Shoot is all about having fun, most trad bows are OK.

From: stkbow
Date: 19-Aug-18

As was mentioned, all trad bows are welcome for the blanket shoot,, recurves and three piece bows are part of the mix,, Over the years we were approached requesting these inclusions,,,

The Longbow competition will be held Saturday with a shotgun start about 9:00,,

After the scores are tallied and awards are given out, the range will be opened again for the fun rounds, Not sure but I believe these will be at a cost of ten dollars a round,,, if anyone wishes a bit of competition they are welcome to initiate a challenge and begin the blanket shoots at this time,,

Sunday will also be open to all traditional equipment, again with a shotgun start shortly after nine,, again with an entry fee of $10. And an item for the blanket shoot,, Mike had talked of drawing for the prizes rather than selecting by highest score, This seemed to be a fair way to give everyone a chance to be a winner..

I know Mike had talked about an all round champion award for the competition on Saturday as well as the first place awards.. I believe this will involve a shoot off of the leaders in each class,, I don't know the particulars on this so not sure of the time line,,, as I said before,,, the fun rounds will begin After the Championship competition and awards are completed..

Just to be clear,,,, Sat,,, Longbow Championship,,, Longbows and selfbows,, wood arrows only untill this competition and business has been completed,,,,

Saturday afternoon,, come one come all trad shooters,,

Sunday ,, Blanket shoot to include any and all traditional shooters and equipment,,

Sorry I've been off site,, will try to keep up a bit better,,,

From: BowAholic
Date: 20-Aug-18

thanks Roberto. :)

From: Dave Lay Professional Bowhunters Society - Qualified Member Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 20-Aug-18

So Saturday afternoon is shoot for fun , then the blanket shoot is on Sunday is that correct ?

From: BowAholic
Date: 20-Aug-18

That is what Robert told me... I had planned on shooting a round with my longbow and a round with my selfbow, but he said there is only the one round Saturday morning for the Championship title. I do know that winners will receive a trophy arrows as well as the buckle.

From: Dave Lay Professional Bowhunters Society - Qualified Member Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 20-Aug-18

Robert, if we’re going to draw for blanket items so everyone wins how bout drawing for buckles ? It’s been a while since I won one :)

From: stkbow
Date: 21-Aug-18

Dave Lay,,,, I still think there were some funny stuff happened when you won your first buckle,,, that's when you and Zander were real tite and y'all shot together,,,,,, not sure if that was about the same time y'all were campin on humpback mountain or when that all started,,,,,

With that in mind,,, had some input from one of our visitors that we mix the ground rather than letting buds shoot together,,, y'all need to have some input???

Dang it man,,, even if we draw for buckles I couldn't win one,,,,

From: stkbow
Date: 21-Aug-18

" mix the groups "

From: BowAholic
Date: 21-Aug-18

if new people attend mixing the groups might be a good thing...as long as I'm in a group with someone that will keep score for me. I have never filled out my own score card... LOL :)

From: stkbow
Date: 21-Aug-18

I'm all for mixing the groups,,, have met some long time friends when thrown together with a bunch of folks I had not met before,, this is the norm at the Texas Longbow shoot,, have not been around to many other shoots so not sure how common it is,,,,

It's a pretty big hassle for thos managing the shoot in some ways and of course there is always those that want to gripe about the mix,,,

Have ing all the girls shoot together has always made for some good times,,, when we held this shoot out at Lone Pine you could always tell which side of the holler the ladies group was on,, They always had a good time,,,,,

Robert, you know the deal ...ya have campers and then you have hunters lol...on mixing groups I know you did it at lone pine with good results. Personally I prefer to shoot with buds but you know me and how that works. Mixing groups and the shot gun start would work pretty well overall

From: stkbow
Date: 23-Aug-18

Dlay,,, I'm gonna leave it up to Middlebrook and the other officers,, I'm intrigued in seeing how they set it up this year,,, sounds like we will be working from the building and porch,, not sure if they will set the novelty shoots there or around camp,,

I'm really interested in seeing the response for the Selfbow flight shoot,,, hope a lot of folks want to play,,, if you still had your Terry Hughes stick you could probably win that deal,,,,

From: Dave Lay Professional Bowhunters Society - Qualified Member Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 23-Aug-18

Is the flight competition for selfbows only ?

From: Dave Lay Professional Bowhunters Society - Qualified Member Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 23-Aug-18

One more question the wife wants to know about what time the potluck dinner is on Saturday? She won’t be able to shoot but was going to visit and bring something . Love the family atmosphere of this shoot

From: BowAholic
Date: 23-Aug-18

We can shoot any bow to see how far it will send a 10gpp arrow, but the National Primitive Flight shoot is just for selfbows, single backed composite bows, and complex composite bows (like my bamboo back and belly bow). I have actually been shooting my Albright bow for distance...it does "OK"... (sorry Dave, just kidding) I'm not that good at a flight release but have made a 213 yard shot with it using a 10gpp arrow. You have to love watching arrows fly a long distance!

From: Dave Lay Professional Bowhunters Society - Qualified Member Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 24-Aug-18

“National primitive flight shoot” ? Dang !

From: BowAholic
Date: 24-Aug-18

I will have certificates for anyone that shoots a qualifying arrow over 170 yards. I may also have an award arrow for the one that makes the longest qualified shot.

From: Dave Lay Professional Bowhunters Society - Qualified Member Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 25-Aug-18

Ya know Bob this makes me wish I still had my old 60 lb Terry Hughes selfbow id love to see its cast

From: BowAholic
Date: 25-Aug-18

Terry makes great bows. I miss one I had many years ago as well. It was amazing to watch him make and shoot an osage bow in one hour while at the June shoot.

From: stkbow
Date: 25-Aug-18

Dlay. The potluck is usually six or six thirty,, usually depends on the weather and who is cooking or what,,,,, been known to be at seven because of other activities,,, just be sure she comes cause I sure like her cooking,,,

From: BowAholic
Date: 26-Aug-18

It's awesome that we have a big new air conditioned building for the Potluck dinner. :)

From: stkbow
Date: 26-Aug-18

It's just a shame we have so many good cooks,,, I always feel obligated to sample everything and end up stuffed,,, oh well. I'll just take a nap on the porch under the fans,,, ,,

From: BowAholic
Date: 27-Aug-18

I looks like things are coming together nicely. I even heard that the hot dog/polish sausage wagon might be there... yummy!

From: BowAholic
Date: 28-Aug-18

nothing like discovering that your camper has a big leak and you need to tear it apart to repair it 3 days before the shoot... oh well...it may be duct taped together, but I'll be there.

From: BowAholic
Date: 29-Aug-18

just a few more things to do (I hope) and the camper will be ready to roll. I never thought I would look forward to loading stuff for the trip. LOL. It looks like it will be pretty warm the next few days...everyone bring plenty of water/cool-aide/whatever... :)

From: BowAholic
