So I'm wanting to start building wood arrows again after years of shooting carbons. Which taper tool do you all recommend? I was kind of interested in a Woodchuck but don't see them for sale anymore. I used to use one of the old Tru-Center with OK results. Are the new ones better?

My Bear Paw works great , a nicely crafted tool the weight feels good in the hand.

The V2 Tru Centers are great. I have ran dozens and dozens of arrows through mine, still sharp and accurate.

I think that the Footed Shaft has the Woodchuck

FS Discount archery also for Woodchuck

I checked the Footed shaft and FS Discount Archery and neither had the Woodchuck.

I have a Woodchuck but there is a lot of horizontal play in the shaft causing unevenness in the taper. Now I use a disc sander by clamping a wooden guide on the table with the correct taper, and every shaft is perfect. Richard

Disc sander with Tim’s Taper tool. The Woodchuck is no longer being produced.

I have the cheap Bearpaw taper tool, works fine even on Douglas fit. Did not buy the new Tru Center tool because I am annoyed the stopped selling replacement blades for their original tool that I already have.

Simple, cheap, and bulletproof.

Another option is the Top Hat screw on system. Isn’t cheap but no taper needed. I am anther who an’it happy about no replacement blades. I bought extra but they won’t last forever. I also invested in a couple drill motor adapters. You can do a doz in about 5minutes and no sore fingers.

There's a Woodchuck for sale on the TG classifieds page for arrow stuff. Send me a PM if you're interested and don't hace access to that.

Disk sander with a guide for point and nock tapers. A cheap combo belt/disk sander is cheaper than a Woodchuck, And then you own a sander!

Andy Ponce from addictive archery has some great tutorial s on YouTube about arrow building. He also sells taper tools from his web sight.

I use the Woodchuck, not sure you will still find one and a bearpaw metal one, both work well

As has already been pointed out, if you have a disk sander, it's very easy too make a taper board with a stop block on the end. A table saw will also work. Just replace the saw blade with a disk sander.

Short of disc sander a "jig" to set the angles correctly, Woodchuck for sure.

I too noticed the end play in the motor shaft. Fixed it by fitting some washers onto the shaft and in between the motor housing and the disc fixture. Took some diddling but got end play down to a couple thousandths of an inch.

I used some silicone based grease in there with that fix because it doesn't creep and get around like the petroleum based greases do.

Yes, it is stupid & disappointing that such a pricey tool should need fiddling like that. But was a done deal, and I needed to do something about it.

If you make a lot of woodies like I do, you really should get something a Woodchuck or the sanding disc. Any of the pencil sharpener type no matter how nice and/or accurate the cut is, will seriously wear you out in pretty short order.

I just recently got a table saw. I need to look into setting that up for taper grinding.

But why, if I've already got a Woodchuck? Ah, yes, but why not? :)

I sold my Woodchuck years ago and bought both parts of Tim's Taper Tool...I do my point and nock ends and put a 10" tail taper on my shafting...Love the results.

Look it up on YouTube...

Happy hunting, Jason
