Bought it new in 2007 and still going strong. My wife and son keep trying to get me to trade it in but it ain't happening.

I've dragged a few deer out of the woods with her. I hunt on private property that has some nice trails so I usually can get within 100 yards of any deer I kill. Put a deer hauler on the back and good to go. Any More hunting vehicles out there. I love them Jeeps, this is my 4th one.

A jeep is good for getting around on forest trails and such, but it’s not big enough to pull my camper or bass boat. For that, I have a 2014 Silverado Z71. My wife drives the Jeep.

Not to drag the post off in the bushes, but I need advice from the Jeep lovers. I ain't getting any younger and I'm toying with the idea of creating my "bucket vehicle" with an older Wrangler when I retire in a couple. My wife has a '99 Cherokee Laredo with less than 100K actual miles on it (my same year Tacoma has 2.5 times that). Nothing wrong with her Cherokee as is, but I haven't told her it figures into my plans so she doesn't start whining for something newer. When she finally can't drive a 20+ year old vehicle that is barely "broke in", I'm really interested in the engine.... the AMC based inline 4.0 liter, 6-cylinder that I think was one of the best engines they every put in them. So if it becomes the power plant of my "silver years" Wrangler, which series is the favorite and will accept this engine with minimum hassle, CJ, TJ, YJ,JK, JL? I know there are a lot of fans of Dana 44 front and rear axle models so it would be a plus if the model year came with them, but not a show stopper. I'm in 4WD where I hunt, but not climbing cliffs. Big wheels would be nice and they make me sorta want to paw the ground and butt my head against trees! What's your thoughts?

Love that vehicle Thumper. I love these trad hunting vehicle threads. My favorite vehicle was a 99 Toyota Tacoma. Would go anywhere. Had 470,000 miles on it when frame split in two. Just bought a 2002 toyoya tacoma for my new hunting vehicle.

I had a 99 Jeep Cherokee Laredo and the gas tank straps rusted off. That was/is common on those so make sure you check that good if you plant to keep it. Not fun when the tank drops smack on to the ground as you're driving.

I had a 96 Cherokee with the 4.0 engine. I probally would still have it but my son took it to Montana when he moved out there. It's probally still running. Never understood why they stopped putting those engines in the Jeeps. I'm pretty sure they stopped using the 4.0 in 2006.

Will tell, that sounds correct....that's why I figure my options are limited. The Jeep junkie sites concur, the 4.0L inline 6 wouldn't win any gas mileage awards, but was pretty much a bomb proof legend. It's just sacrilegious to get rid of one with <100K. You can't tell my wife anything....and I live a lot easier when I don't even bother to try! My other concern is a desire to go back to a manual transmission. I had a left knee replacement that will forever hurt, but an auto is just not trad, lol!

Ambleman, That goofy dog goes everywhere with me. He lets me drive every now and then. The canoe was an eight month project...turned out great, but unfortunately sucks on the river. 19'6" is to long for the North Branch of the Au Sable. It hangs in the shed and we take the 15 footer.

My wife likes Jeeps, and has owned a few of them. The 4 liter straight 6 is a much better engine than the V6 that is in her 2009 Grand Cherokee.

I bought this 6 banger jeep new in 74 (I think), plain jane, didn't even have a radio. There were holes in the floorboard from the factory to let the water out when you got in too deep.

I put big 16" Grip Spur tires from the Co-op on it, if it didn't bottom out it was unstoppable.

I got divorced in 78, drove away from my marriage in this jeep with a B&W TV I had to change channels on with a pair of pliers and little else.

I moved into an apartment, seldom drove the jeep. One day I decided to charge the very dead battery and crank the motor. The motor still ran like a sewing machine.

That evening I went to work on the midnight shift, when I came home the next morning some low life had stolen my jeep, I never saw it again. I picked the wrong day to charge the battery.

The deer was my first bow kill, the year was 74-75, I don't remember exactly.

Besides my 55 CJ I also had a 55 Willys pickup, I bought it in 1974 at a junk yard and rebuilt the whole thing and put a stake body on it that I got at a different junk yard It had a 6 cylinder flathead Super Hurricane motor. I loaded it up with all my belongings in 75 and moved to our 47 acres in western Montana we had bought the year before. We lived in a cabin tent for a year while I built a cabin on our land. I loved that little truck and it had it's share of game in the back over the years. It never let me down.

From: RonG

There is a big V-8 under that hood with a lot of goodies, in reality I do use it for hauling, just have to be very careful of the paint...…..Nice rigs guys

I may add back in the day I found out that a model T with its original power plant, strip off the fenders and put larger (balloon type tires) on it and it would go places that a jeep couldn't, I know, I pulled out a few jeeps.

In Florida too much horsepower and aggressive tires will get you into trouble, we have no base you just keep sinking.

Anywhere else they work fine.

Seeing all those jeeps brought back some memories, not all of them fond ones. Had ‘69 Jeepster Commando (Kaiser). Had a Buick V6, small 2 seat cab, with a 4’X4’ open back. Good for carrying water or fuel jugs, or cord wood. I think there was about 2 5 gallon buckets of Bondo holding the bottom quarter panels together, and always carried 2 extra clutch cables with me. Funny that the only time the cables broke was on icy or snowy roads, so I’d have to lie on the cold ground to change it. The day I sold it, the new owner drove off, and a bolt rattled around, and fell on the ground. I now drive pretty comfy GMC Sierra 4X4. Gets me where I need to get to, and dependable. Just not so great on narrow goat trails.

Best part about old jeeps is anyone can drive them. A 97 Cherokee with a straight 6 a couplhundred k and running strong. Warm heat cold ac and Carla you door locks. We drove it 4 hours one way on this trip. Picked it up from a guy for $1200 put a few hundred into the mechanicals and stopping some leaks and it runs like a top. I promise it will go places you won’t take a newer/nicer ride and still get ya home.

I've got a 2017 ram now which is a great family truck but I sure miss my 87 YJ I had way back. That thing never had a top on it or doors unless it was below 45 degrees. Had a lot of fun in that thing. One day I'll have a new 4dr jk for the family

Guys I love seeing all these rigs that are used !! I too have soft spot for older Jeeps [I had a CJ3] but the long outback distances in Australia were killing my little mountain goat. The Ford Ute in pic is a 4 Litre six engine but with a factory locking rear diff that is nice for when situation gets sticky The camp set up is pretty typical of a WA outback hunt that works for me.

Love the pics, especially of Thumper's early Ford Bronco. I have one of those but it's not for hunting, just cruising. When I go hunting I drive my 2015 F-150 Supercrew 4x4. Here is a pic of my Bronco to go with Thumper's.

no pictures, my Jeeps were long go. I had a bunch (either 8 or 9) of the old '40s & '50s CJ-2A & the like, a FORD GPW with bullet holes in body & air snorkel up the windshield frame, and frame tow strap loops, and a '74 CJ-5, a '73 CJ-5, and an '83 CJ-7. People ask how many and I tell them maybe 27 Jeeps. It's not that far of aa stretch. Old square Broncos are cool, a buddy of mine had one with the half- cab many years. This makes me want to get another old JEEP. My shop buildings are full though, would have to add on.

CRAIG you sold my Jeep. haha. MOAB: I rented a junky CJ-7 a week while vacationing in MOAB in ? 1983 or so. My '74 had the 232 if I recall it right, had a couple CJs with the 258, and my '73 had the revvy Buick v-6. BEST old driver ws my '83 CJ-7 with 258 and 4-speed. The old 258s I had all had tons of torque, would lug like crazy, it really did not matter a lot what gear you were in, just driving around slow-like. ALL my 258s have leaked oil out the rear mains.......a little. A friend of mine & I built his house hauling all the limber (except trusses) from Des Moines to here using a trailer & his '74 CJ-5 258 & 3-speed.

LOL Craig on the gas tank. I forgot about the 2010 Robicon. The 64 cj5 and 78 CJ7 about 14mpg. The 2010 Robicon 16 mpg. Not much fuel improvement in 46 years. All pretty much mud/snow stock tires. The 64 maxed out about 58mph and that was down hill.

Craig, both my old '74 232-6 and '83 258-6 got 20-21-22 mpg at 55 after I put the tall skinnys on. is the Moab 4.0 you had a Dodge v-6 or the old Rambler inline 6? I lose track of when they became Chrysler.

HAd a 63 utility wagon. It just kept on going. It had Typhoon or Tornado in it and it would climb a tree with right tires. It was a beast and took anything I could dish out. Dating a Northwest stewardess who said she was an avid outdoors woman.

After an especially nice ride into a lost lake she said “I wasn’t expecting John Wayne in a Jeep.” She left and the Jeep stayed. Don’t miss her but I do miss the rig.

I had a 1990 Jeep Comanche pickup. I loved that little truck but traded it away for a Silverado in the mid-90s. It had the 4.0 liter straight 6 with a 5 speed. That truck had some giddyup. Sadly I don't even have a picture of it. What a bummer.

From: hawkeye in PA
Date: 15-Jun-22

Jim that looks like my 64, paid 100 dollars for it because the farmer put in a new radiator. Lol. The kid's told me it was to far gone for off roading, so I fixed it up and drove it on the road for ten years while still off roading. Learnt alot about welding! BTW that cam only has one bearing at the water pump end every other journel is lube by oil in a groove. That's the reason they locked up when over heated but could be broke loose again. Minus a few more HP's. :(

I have a stable of Isuzu troopers I use. Two for driving and three for parts as parts are hard to come by in Michigan. The two we drive were bough in Pennsylvania for $800 for the pair. I drove one home and trailered the other because I wasn't sure how durable they would be. Put 50k on them and they go anywhere. The three spares I have about $1000 into. Five speed, 4 cylinder. I will be using one here in a few weeks hauling Oak tops out of my woodlot. My son won Coolest Vehicle in High School driving the one shown here to school every day his Senior year. Good Day

I don't own a Jeep. But my family and friends do, some have several each. Our town, Butler Pa was the birthplace of the Jeep. They're everywhere here. We have Jeep festivals and such. It's like a cult here. I wouldn't mind getting an old cj5 or 7 one day, or a Harley, but I've been thinking that for 40 years, so...

Besides, I kinda like my truck. Can't haul much in a Jeep.
