Just wondering.I know there was debate on whether you need to shoot wood arrows in the finalsI. know you could qualify with whatever you wanted to shoot, but then had to go to wood in the finals..Did that change? thanks Tom

No it didn't change. I hope it never will. You have to understand the reason and history for this competition. For those who don't like the rules, they don't have to play. Not trying to be nasty, it is just no body is forced to compete in this. The rules are very simple, plain, and it is the same for everyone, no matter the equipment being shot. DANNY

I'm with Danny on this. Follow the rules...they are the same for everyone and keep a level playing field. Fussing over it is a quick way to end it.

I probably wouldn't bother with wood arrows if it wasn't for that dang shoot! Yet here I am... just built a dozen for myself, a dozen for my wife, another dozen for my daughter, and 2 more dozen for friends that are going. It must keep their vendors busy.
I've wondered if bamboo arrows would be considered wood, because I like them better than cedar, fir, or hardwood.

For me personally, I would like to see that rule changed, I hate wood arrows. I won the Eagle Eye a couple of years ago with the help of some Canadian friends who are very good with wood arrows. They got mine straight and that helped. I would prefer to shoot my carbons and not have to ask for help getting the woodies straight.

Guys will do anything to get an advantage over another, it is how it's always been....especially when money is involved. I would like to see all of the money go to charity rather than a 50/50 split. That would take away 30% of the ones even shooting it, and give more to the charity, which is hunts for disabled veterans.

I like it the way it is. I wish it was all wood from the beginning, I would be meticulously matching my wood arrows prior to the event, but many probably would not. The all wood requirement would lower the number of participants and resulting revenue generated. I'm sure that was the consideration for it only being required in the finals. TLM

I think they should have a shoot for each type of arrow. say a class for 2114,2016,2017 etc. then everyone could get a trophy.

To "Know History" helps us understand the present. monkeyball thanks for reposting that and reminding people what this competition IS about and its origin. One thing I wish, "Those" that run ETAR would do, is post a sign at the shoot explaining the history for this competition yearly. There are so many new shooters who don't know, but need to know. This will make the 21st year I have gone to ETAR. This competition was going on before I started going. Dan McMahon was still sponsering it when I started showing up. When many of us "Old Timers" who know the competitions origins are gone, my fear is its history will be forgotten. DANNY

Monkeyball/linecutter, you are correct. I had a friend who witnessed that shoot off when the IBO was held here WV. Danny McMahon not only hit the orange circle stuck on the deer, but when he did, my friend reported to me, some guy in the crowd said "I bet he couldn't do it again" whereupon Danny's only response was to pull another wooden arrow out and repeat the shot...and then a third after which he just turned and smiled at the detractor. At least that was how my buddy related it to me. Knowing I am a stick shooter he knew I would love the story. So Dan McMahon continued the tradition in honor of the wooden arrow and its accuracy in capable hands.

I remember the first one as well, and I think this will make year 30...starting in 1989 if my memory holds correct. One year the fellow who won was using an all wood bow. Now you see all sorts of bows but still wooden arrows...which is the tradition of that event. It needs to stay the same, but I would like to see more of the pot go to the disabled vets.

George if you take away 30% of the shooters, you take away 30% of the money as well, hows that going to give more to charity ?? Come on your smarter than that.

BOWDAWG, no you don't. Do the math. All of the money would go to the vets, so even with 30% less shooters they would get more money and less whining...and poor me attitudes.

BOWDAWG, I should have been clearer. With all the money going to the vets, even a cut of 50% would equal the same amount going to them. I personally think you wouldn't lose 30% anyway, but that likely won't happen. Keeping wood arrows makes a level field, that's all.

Who is whining? Who is saying poor me? The OP just asked a question and a few people gave their opinions. Isn't that what this place is for? I look forward to this event every year, and it forces me to play with wood arrows, and that is good for the trad archery economy. The vets get half the money. It's a win win win. if you guys would like to see the vets get more then make a donation at the table. I'm sure they will take it.

As for my response, I was not complaining or whining. I was expressing an opinion that I like carbons because keeping woods perfectly straight is a problem for me. I always follow the rules as stated even if I would prefer something else. Getting wood arrows straight is not something I am good at. In any case, the Eagle Eye is a great event which I have enjoyed competing in, I hope it continues.

Well that is the whole point of using wood arrows. They want you to shoot a crooked arrow. Heck anybody can shoot a good straight carbon
