Kabobs to hit the grill next. Been cutting deer meat all day. Jerky to hit the oven tonight. Steaks tomorrow night. This year has been unbelievably busy. 5 deer in the deep freeze. No way l’ll gettum all done today. We have ate almost all the backstraps and tenderloins. We have only eaten a couple hindquarters. 8 more to go. Got five done today. 3 more to be done tomorrow evening. I’m ashamed but getting it done over the next few days. Work can wait.

I went looking for mushrooms at a new spot this morning, only found a couple chanterelles, but got into a great patch of red and black raspberries and spent a couple hours there picking. Just had some venison chili with paleo berry cobbler for desert.

I took the boys to the range yesterday and saw three fawns. Two were not much bigger than Harley Boy. I'm digging into some Good Stuff. The pie is coming, it needs to cool down some.

Man it all looks fantastic. Anybody here just like big slabs of grilled vadalia onions on the grill? About half an inch thick, 3 or 4 of them right next to some tenderloin or chops. Nybubba

In comment to the original post, I had that happen one year. 3 shots at a buck in a matter of less than 8 minutes.
Was hunting on the ground off my Waldrop, Bob Lee "Natural" laying across my legs.
7 o'clock work whistle just went off in town at the Forge, and the sun was rising right on schedule.
And so were the deer, I could see a couple pair of legs coming up the trail. They would cross about thirteen yards in front of me if it all worked out.
A nice buck was shortly standing there, plenty of antler and a blocky body. Mind and motion went into automatic pilot.
I made a perfect vital hit on a White Pine that was behind where the buck stood.
He spun and collected the others, and went back the way they came from.
I sat in the Waldrop looking at that Pine......well, you know the feeling.
I hear a "snap", behind me and to my left ,and as I turn my head slowly I can't believe this buck is coming back again to see me.
I scramble to get another arrow out of my Cat quiver as this is happening very fast, and he is just getting almost to close, when I turn sharply to my left and take the shot.
The Zwickey hit a branch and dived into the leaves, the buck spun, and back he went.
Talk about a head held low.
Licking my wounds I sat there wondering "How many times do you get two shots at a buck on the gro........" when here he comes again.
Really having a hard time getting another Zwickey clad carbon soldier out of his resting place now. This buck is coming fast and I can not screw up again.
He is almost going to hit my scent stream when I come to full draw. Caught him right in front of the left foreleg and angled back into the opposite shoulder.
Helen Keller could have tracked that one and would have found him about 60 yards away on the trail. What a morning!
I left the first shot in the tree. I walk by it every now and then as a reminder as to what can happen when your out there. You never know.......

Craig, at least your story ended with you getting him. I should not tell this BUT, my first season to have Jeff's bow (second year with traditional gear) I had a really nice buck stop and rub the tree right in front of me I shot over him twice before he walked away only to come back and let me shoot under him the third. I should never had let the third arrow go. I was way to jumpy. That was the first deer I had the chance to shoot at with a longbow and by far the biggest. Barber, I suppose we will have a Freeman bow success list come fall?

Got to get a new cooker next year, suppose. This old cast iron wash pot I've used for grilling and smoking everything the last 45 years from cabrito to brisket has rusted out beyond fixing up anymore. Just grilled some hamburgers with pecan wood chips this week for its final use.

This is the old cast iron pot I was referring to above. Left it out of the reply above. Think it needs some help - and I need another cup of coffee.
