I came across these shafts and am looking for some information/history on them. They appear to be the same manufacturer, one marked Resco and the other Snell. Both brands are tapered as I tried to show in the picture. They seem like they would be pretty durable (for fiberglass) as they have a thick wall on the point end. Does anyone have any knowledge or experience with these shafts?

Thanks. Doug

When I did a google search I found a Rick Snell who made a Silent Stalker bow. Were there inserts with the shafts?

Ron, There were no inserts with the shafts. I did some quick checks with some inserts on hand and determined there will be an aluminum insert that will fit. I am not sure about the nock. I have not looked too closely at that end yet. Arrows seem identical except for the name. I am thinking the Grizzly nock will fit.

I am beginning t think I should just send these shafts to the Smithsonian.

I must admit, I've never seen shafts like them, and I was around back in the day when fiberglass shafts were popular. I would think they would be some good shooters if you can find point and nock inserts to fit.

I don't feel that these are old shafts. The color reminds me of the shafts (Thunder something) sold as kids arrows at Walmart etc?

Ron, there are a couple of these marked 12 and 13. If nothing else, they would make good fence posts or musky rods. They are pretty stout! I don't think they are kids' arrows, at least the heavier ones. They spined over 100#s. LOL

I think they are now out of business.

If you don't have nock inserts you may be able to find a wood shaft that will slip inside the nock end. If so, nock taper the wood shaft, cut to two inches and glue it inside the shaft. Same works for the point end.

Maybe he had them made just for heavy weight bows. I've never seen tapered fiberglass shafts in all my years. May have been a regional thing at the time. I doubt it's a coincidence that they have the same name as Rick's bows. Likely a special run by some company that was capable of that. 12 and 13 in standard fiberglass shaft jargon would equate to 65 to 75 pounds. Spine them on a 28" span with a 2# weight and see what deflection you get.

A town about 45 minutes from here had a fiberglass shaft maker, Everly, Iowa. They did some experimental stuff with shaft tapers, they ended up with three weights of straight walled shafts. The extra heavy shafts were really good. I cannot remember their name.

I remember seeing tapered fiberglass shafts in the FS Arrows catalog out of California. The shafts were black and tapered, which was unusual for a fiberglass shaft. This was in the early 90's.

I don't know if they're connected to your shafts, but I do remember tapered fiberglass existed. They were offered only two years and then phased out by carbons.

I wish I had gotten some.

Thanks for the info and ideas so far guys.

George, the heavier arrows spine well over 100# on my Sheib spine tester. These are some serious shafts.

I plan to make some up and see how they shoot. Not sure I have any bows heavy enough for them. I might have to send some to Rick Barbee to test for me. Lol

Did you try to call the person that Jaz mentions? Sounds like the guy.

The contact information Jim provided was from a 2004 post on Archery Talk. I called that number and it is no longer in service.

But, that is a starting point. These shafts appear to be well made. I plan to find out.

Thanks for the info guys.
