What grit sandpaper are you bowyers using for fine wood veneers under clear glass? Richard

Same as the cores 50,60, 80. My veneers are ready to go when I get them and are .019 to .021 so I'm not looking to alter the thickness
What kind do you have? What wood? How thick?
Did you grind them yourself?

Grind them all myself, but today I worked on some Bubinga and Zebrawood that looks like a finer grit might bring out the character of the wood.

Oops, sorry. I use 36 grit to shape the lams but it looks much to rough when working with certain dark woods. ( Rosewood, Bubinga)

Worn down 36, or switch to 50 :-) better thickness control with 50 grit. JF

Thanks, Jeff, I have 23 risers ready to go, waiting patiently for limbs. Went to the lumber store yesterday and bought some Padauk and Zebrawood, and then spent all afternoon cutting and grinding veneers: Zebrawood, Rosewood, Bubinga, Myrtle, Bocote, Actionboo, and a few more I cant't pronounce. The 36 grit is fine for rough shaping, but I think I'll try 80 grit for the veneer surface that will show under the clear glass. Richard

For veneer surface that will show under clear glass I wouldn't finish with anything more course than 120.

Richard, I've seen some of your bows and whatever you have used in the past looks great! I personally use 60 grit for all my laminations.

X2 what bodyman said. As long as they are not too rough to make a good glue joint they should look fine.

36 grit wood to wood and 100 grit under glass. The finer grit makes the grain stand out more . 100 grit is a good compromise between rough and smooth.
