My daughter turns 2 in August. Want to get her a bow she can shoot hopefully with some arrows that are matched and a little back quiver. Anybody on here making a turnkey kit that will get me from 2-5 years old or there about? I realize at first she will need assistance shooting it, but its better than having her shoot my 68” longbow with 8” brace.

I have a Black Rhino for my granddaughter, set it up with finger savers. Not sure where to point you for the arrows and quiver. The arrows you get though, concern yourself with light weight versus proper spine etc and sharp points are kind of important, if their arrows are just bouncing off the target, they get discouraged! So it's almost a better idea if you carry their arrows to they get bigger!

St Joe River Bows,Stalker Stickbows also makes some great bows for youngsters.

Black Rhino - Chuck posts here as Okaw.

Chuck helped me set up #2 son when he was a (very petite) 5-year- old, and he shot the same bow 'til he was 11 & change. This one is a 48 Lite.

OldGoat is correct about arrows - Chuck has those, too.. and a belt quiver.

I started my son off with an Elk Ridge Archery Pilgrim Squirt. We still have that bow. We grew through two more Elk Ridge bows, they have a trade in program. Son is now shooting a Black Rhino. Have a Maddog that's 37@28 waiting for him when he is ready. Maybe latter this year or next. Have handled the St. Joe River Bows also. They all are usable quality bows.

For looks Elk Ridge For color St. Joe For cost Black Rhino For teen years and beyond Maddog

Just my $.02

2X Oldgoat! Could see disappointment in my grandsons face, his arrows were bouncing back at him. Went from 1416 to 1516 arrows now sticking, can't discribed the smile on his face.

2 is pretty young. I have a 2 yr old and there is no way she could shoot a kids bow. I recently made my other 2 kids ages 6 and 10 glass longbow. for my 6 yr old when she was 5 I just got a red oak board and kept shaving it down till she could halfway pull it back. i think it was 36" long and it was so light it wouldn't even register on my bow scale. that's what I would suggest instead of going glass at this stage.

From: bodymanbowyer
Date: 17-Jun-18

I've made some ASL 36"-56"

From: Whauburger
Date: 17-Jun-18

I'd say it depends on the kid and parent depending on age. I let my kids at 2 hold and pretend to shoot. By 5 They were "shooting" at like 3 yards into Styrofoam blocks....I just bought a Martin youth longbow that isn't made anymore but sometime the Martin sliver or quill pop up on eBay or classifieds.

From: Mountain Man
Date: 17-Jun-18

At 2yrs old in my opinion a good stick bent to a D with a shoe string and some selfnock sticks are a great way to start

Mike, at Maddog Archery would be my suggestion too. He built one for my Fiancee's 7 year old daughter. It is a beautiful bow and Mike builds them at a fantastic price. I cannot imagine you finding a better quality bow for the money. He is a pleasure to deal with as well.

Always a heart-breaker to see these pop up in November/December, because these things don't come out of vending machines!

The Pilgrim Squirts are great starter bows. They are available at 3 rivers and they are great looking and good shooting. My son is about to graduate to a new bow, but he has had his since he was 3 and loves it.

Good luck!

Nice to see Mr. Freeman getting due props!

And don’t forget our friend Nemah (R.K. Korte) - if you’re a fan of the old Bears, his reproductions are simply stunning... And he makes them pint-sized as well...

From: George D. Stout Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 20-Dec-18

They are going to grow out of them fast so I would find some cheap fiberglass bows and use them until you see if they are interested enough to stay with it. Buying a custom bow for a two or three year old doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Kids have a way of growing quickly and often.

From: Bxrecurve15
Date: 20-Dec-18

Give Jess Stuart at Sierra Blanca a call. He makes a great bow and he’s great to deal with.

From: Mike Mecredy
Date: 20-Dec-18

George I have lots of respect for you and usually things you post are loaded with wisdom. But "find some cheap fiberglass bow" isn't one of them. In 2006, I saw a kid at a 3/D shoot with a cheap fiberglass bow and he wasn't having any fun seeing his arrows bounce off the targets. It was the next day I designed the Maddog Pup longbow. Yes kids will grow, but they'll have their bow to pass along, and they'll have a better chance of sticking with the sport if they are shooting bows that are enjoyable to shoot. Same goes with things like musical instruments, guitars and such, buy them junk and they'll not want to stick with it.

Got to agree with Mike on this one. My 5 year old grandson wanted a bow like his papa's. Just the other day My grandson Jacob won a Mad Dog pup donated by Mike on another Trad site. I was prepared to buy one this spring. A nice made bow whether for kids or adults can be passed on. The smile alone is worth the cost.

As a former teacher and coach, I have a special place in my heart for kids. I've made dozens of bows for kids ranging to simple longbows to fancy recurves based on Bears' Kodiak model. I've also taught several kids to make their own bows, and most are still shooting and hunting many years later.

Here's a 48" recurve I just finished today...18#@26"...for a student I had in class in 1976. Now she's a grandmother and she wanted a nice little bow for her grandson..age 7. How can I refuse a request like that? I highly encourage you, if you're able, to make a few bows for kids, or teach them to shoot, or make them a few arrows. Not only your kids, but anyone young one who is interested. You will be richly rewarded! Merry Christmas to you all! Richard

I got mine a St. Joe Rivers this year. Haven’t used it yet since it’s for Christmas. I can say it is a nice little bow for fit and finish. You also can’t beat the grow with the bow program also.

Excellent service too I might add. The one I wanted off their website was out of stock. So they put me in touch with one of their suppliers that had one, and got me the one I wanted.

I have always believed in getting a good, usable bow into the hands of our future archers. I’ve heard from literally hundreds of parents about the disappointment their kids had when trying to shoot a cheap, plastic bow, and having the arrows bounce off the target, or not being able to even hit the target.

That is why We have always offered a 75% credit on our kids bows when traded in on a new bow. That takes away some of the “sting” of upgrading, and makes it easier to get the right bow length and draw weight without overbowing. Don’t make the mistake of getting a bow that the kid will “ grow into”.

Maddog for sure, if they grow out of it , it's there for the next generation, grand kids, neighbor's kids and such. My kids wanted a bow just like dad's.

From: GF

See what I said about Nemah’s bows???

Wow!

Still appreciate Chuck helping me get hold of that 48-L for my younger son about 8 years ago already... He’s outgrown that one, moved up to a Bobby Lofton and now he wants something with more pop to it, but the other day he was grouping about 8” wide close to 20 yards, even though most were dropping short...

Better shooting at 13 than a lot of adults I’ve seen at shoots. Don’t think he would’ve gotten there on a cheap glass job.

I have 2 Little Bears and a Little Wing..all 48” The Little Bears are wonderful bows. One is a girls bow with a Michigan Maple riser and bright yellow Bearglass limbs. The other Little Bear is a Bubinga riser with combo gray and green Bearglass limbs. The Little Wing is a rosewood riser with gray limbs..looks like a mini red Wing Hunter. The best kids quivers are from Sue Dwyer.
