I'm Just wondering how good a guy could actually get with trad gear, if he really worked on it. So whats some of the tightest groups at the furthest distance either you or someone you knew could consistantly pull off. I'm talking with hunting bows.

Interpret what you mean by "tightest groups, and what is YOUR definition of "traditio0nal" gear, and what do you cal a "hunting" bow?

An archer with a solid aiming system and shot sequence, shooting a bow of moderate draw weight can be effective (based on group size required to kill big game) way further than the standard 20 yards.

There are so many terms in your question that encompass very broad definitions that it would be very difficult to some up with a clear answer. And group size is not a completely satisfactory way to determine your effectiveness. As Frank indicated there are plenty of hunters making consistently successful kills beyond 20 yards. But just because you can consistently shoot a particular sized group on a target range doesn't mean you can depend on it in a particular hunting situation.

Just my two cents.

On a reasonably good day, I can group into a foot wide at 65 yards.

Of course, I'm still working out my point-on, etc., so those groups can be 12 feet tall.... but I'm working on it.

Somewhere around here there's video of Jimmy Blackmon popping balloons at 100 yards in enough of a crosswind that the average 8-year-old would need some rocks in his pockets just to stay in one place.

And George D has a few vids of his long bombs as well.

I was reading the other night and saw where in the heyday of the ELB, a man who couldn't shoot 12 arrows per minute, hitting a man-sized target 12 for 12 at 240 yards "would be very lightly esteemed".

So no matter how good you think you are, chances are very good indeed that history is loaded with examples of how much better you could do if you were to make a serious effort... So JMO, never be satisfied. If you start hitting your targets consistently at X yards, back up another 5 and keep at it'til you stop missing. Rinse & Repeat...

3under are you asking because you shoot three under? Yes, that's going to kill your long range accuracy. Your bow or your fist will be in the way of the target. Depends on your gap.

Everything here seems to be a hunting issue. I have had three kill shots more than double the above stated 20 yards. That last sentance is constructed in that manner is because 2 were at the same animal. Back you your thread - it was a pretty good group for 40+yards, longbow, and wood arrows.

Can't say I would have shot two of those arrows if I had known the distance (I gap without knowing the distance). The third was just getting another arrow in a animal that was 'dead'. About positive I'd never shoot at a whitetail at that distance. Not that I couldn't make the shot, but because it might not be there when the arrow got there.

Here's a simple answer, 15 yards with my self bow, 20 yards with a longbow or recurve, 30 yards with my compound, 50 yards with my Flintlock, 100 yards with my deer rifle. All distances are subject to change upon different circumstances.lol

Could not find the included template /templates/BTV/playvideolitestreamingwindow.cfm.

Note: If you wish to use an absolute template path (for example, template="/mypath/index.cfm") with CFINCLUDE, you must create a mapping for the path using the ColdFusion Administrator. Or, you can use per-application settings to specify mappings specific to this application by specifying a mappings struct to THIS.mappings in Application.cfc.
Using relative paths (for example, template="index.cfm" or template="../index.cfm") does not require the creation of any special mappings. It is therefore recommended that you use relative paths with CFINCLUDE whenever possible.
