Got my Toelke whip in today 60" 42 @28 and am very happy with it. Can't say I am surprised, as I went with Toelke based on the many great reviews. Dan and Jared were great to deal with and the whole process took all of 26 days from order to delivery. Fit and finish are great, Dan cut it past center a bit as requested and picked me out some nice bocote. Just wanted to let anyone considering Toelke that I had a great experience with em and look forward to shooting this bow.

Been shooting today. What a blast, I am definitely a novice so many of the gains are most likely lost on me. But this is a totally different experience than my bearpaw slick stick. Lots of fun, Dan told me he cut it as deep as he could without causing torquing issues with the bow not sure how to measure how past center it is. Not that it really matters it shoots much better than I do.

Hi Carter, Yes...Cocobola riser w/ Mango limbs 64" 46#

From: OhioSteve
Date: 17-Jun-18

It's been awhile since I've shot my whip, but when I stop and think about the accuracy, I recall having to put a firm grip onto the riser with my hand, when I shot it. Different then a recurveon grip. It could just be me, but once I was firm w/ my grip, she became a killer!

Carter - I do like the fact that Dan was able to cut into center for you pretty good. I didn't even think of having that done..Steve

From: Bowguy Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member

Wanna comment on the grip. I personally love it. I do not use a firm grip on any bow. How can you torque it more w less hand to move it. I do not heel any bow either to be clear so perhaps there is some difference I don’t know. Not discounting anyone’s advice but the advice I’d give you is a not a firm grip. Firm grips and improper hand position lead to torturing. To be clear, if you were firm and correct everytime you’d torque nothing. Only going into this cause you said it was new. Not sire if you mean bow or trad

From: OhioSteve
Date: 17-Jun-18

I would agree with Bowguy on the clarification of the grip, but in my personal experience of shooting recurves and a few longbows, a firm grip would allow for my arrows to kiss from my whip.. I know it is not typical, but hey, it worked. It might just be the whip design, and my hand. Gripping for me prevents torque on this bow for some reason. Not white-knuckle grip, but rather pressure of a handshake (normal/form control)...ya know what I mean...

Recurves get a lighter touch w/ palm push from me...

For new guys/gals to the hobby, I would say to try many styles, and techniches...you will be better in the end.

From: Temujin
Date: 17-Jun-18

That is one beautiful bow! May I ask what the differences are in shooting compared to your Bearpaw Slick Stick?

From: carter
Date: 17-Jun-18

Temujin,

Thanks, My slick stick was a recurve, so to have this thin elegant little whip sling a arrow out just as fast as the recurve but with no shock and stupidly quiet, its just a much more enjoyable experience. The Whip craftsmanship is much better of course, but there is a large price difference as well I did enjoy shooting the slick stick but even with my limited experience I don't feel like the 2 bows are in the same league.

From: Temujin
Date: 18-Jun-18

Carter,

Thank you for the reply. Wow! So the Whip really is that good!Oh no. My wish list just got bigger. Enjoy your new bow and may it bring you great archery and hunting (if you hunt) success!

Dan and Jared build the finest bows on the planet. They are great folks and I'm thankful for their friendship. Carter, you will enjoy your new Whip--- i have one close to the same specs--42@28, 62". Feel free to PM me if you need any help tuning. Ive got a couple of their Pikas also and between them and the Whip have taken my share of whitetails and squirrels.

From: deerfly

I bought a new t/d Pika back in April and have shot a chinook and whistler in the past couple weeks that my buddies ordered after seeing and shooting my Pika.

Actually, 4 new Toelke bows were purchased in my little circle of friends after seeing and shooting my Pika, but I've only had my hands on two of them. All were finished under 30 days.

Dan and Jared are a pleasure to talk and deal with and of course they make some really fine bows.

A Toelke bow is always a good decision. They are one of the bow makes that sets the standard in tradland IMO. They are among the quietest, well mannered, and easy to tune bows you will find.

From: carter

Patrick, Regarding pictures, I don't think you can beat natural sunlight. Something about sunlight makes a finished wood really come alive. I believe Dan finishes his bow's with many coats of Thunderbird, followed by a hand polish than an over spray finish to give a wonderful matte finish tailored for hunting/glare reduction. I personally like a more glossy look as to show the richness and depth of different woods. In the posted picture you can see the difference between the original post and this one after a few minutes with a towel and a high quality buffing compound (3M).

A Dan toelke story. We as in my son and I were at the cedar river shoot back when Garrett was in 6th grade.Hw was shooting his 20 lb bow. He dragged me over to the tolke booth. Dan had this great 41lb . bow and my son could shoot it. He was drulling. I only had $50 in my pocket for gas home. Dan gave the bow and said pay me when you can. As soon as as I got home I sent him the balance. Very nice bow. My son has shot it and now wants to bring it to his Frat house in Poleman/WAZU WA. I said no to that one.

Quite fond of my Whip; 62" and 42@28, classic grip. Service was outstanding, as usual.Extremely well mannered bow. Mine definitely shoots best for me with a very firm grip thumb and forefinger. Rest of my hand just relaxes and lightly touches the grip (that part's not deliberate, just the most natural feel). A different Whip, with a different fitting grip, might like something different, I guess. Oh, and it's myrtle limbs, bocote riser... and very pleasing to the eye. Again, as usual with a Toelke.

Beautiful bow. Seems like I have "aged a lot" in the past three years, and a #42 Toelke would be a joy to shoot. I just spent the past week shooting hours daily my 55# hunting bows and couldn't look over my right shoulder for a few days :)

From: barebo2
Date: 13-Oct-19

I have to once again add that I'm actually in awe as to how quick and flat shooting the 42# Super Static I recently got is. I don't hunt anymore but have no doubt that this bow would pass a well placed arrow through a deer with ease. Razor sharp broadhead of course!

I talked to Dan today. I basically picked his brain about his bows that would be a good fit for a long draw guy like myself. The conversation was different than any I’ve had before when considering a bow. He listened to me babble on about my traditional journey. Then basically told me what he thought would work best for me and my hunting needs. He actually suggested that I drop some poundage and explained his grips and how each one wanted to be shot. I still have to figure out woods and colors but I think it’s going to be a 64” Whip T/D.

7pt Fl public land buck, 54" T/D Pika (same bow from pics above). Really great bow for hunting the thick swamps I frequent most often and hanging from a tree saddle too. The bow points really well in the hand. I sent Dan my hand outline so the grip is literally perfect. Butter smooth drawing bow at my 27.5" draw. It stays together most of the time but I love the take down option for mountain biking and canoeing etc. It became my go to bow very quickly after getting it this April. Taking a deer with it now is more icing on the cake...

I’ll bring this back up. I talked to Dan again yesterday about a Whip. 64” take down. Elk and whitetail are the intended targets. The conversation went well enough that I think I’m going all in and ordering one tomorrow. I was going to go to Kalamazoo and choose after that trip. The Whip seems to check all the boxes when I began this search. I’m just trying to decide on limb woods if any, I know the riser will be Micarta. Dan told me what he thought the arrow choice and weight should be. My draw is 31” and he also advised me and what weight I needed for elk and what weight I didn’t need. I was going to try one of his inventory bows that wasn’t quite where we decided I needed to be spec wise, just to see if I liked the grip etc. He suggested I let him make one instead, saying that it would save me return postage. I like that kind of confidence in the product. Confidence like that only comes from experience. Good experience. So if you guys have any suggestions on limb veneers to compliment the Micarta or any other intel you’d like to pass on, I’d be obliged. Thank you. Happy New Year.

From: Slowbowjoe
Date: 01-Jan-20

Chain, I got a new Pika a few weeks ago, with Micarta riser. Mine's got dark myrtle veneers (I gave Dan an idea of what I liked, and let him choose) which I think look really nice with the Micarta... Next time around, I think I'd go with Bocote. "Course it's all personal preference.
