I know that this has been done before but I would like to see what peoples opinions are on these bows. Which do you like better and why?

Completely different designs so you have to go on fit...pretty much. I like both, but they are different, and the Super Kodiak fits me much better. If you haven't shot them, then you need to since it is apples versus oranges.

never shot the martin hunter but i have a 70,s damon howatt hunter and a 1964 bear kodiak.for over all speed, smoothness of draw performance, and fit the bear is my choice. you can not go wrong with either find out which one fits you the best.JMO

Both are excellent bows but the Super Kodiak has a better feel to me. It just fits my hand better. I like the Grayling Super Kodiaks the best. I own two 1972 Super Kodiaks.

I personally like the Super Kodiak best. My 1970 is my favorite one I have owned. If buying a Super Kodiak I would buy a used one not a new one.

I will say the grip on the SK fits me better. I have two, a 1972 I bought new and a mid 2000’s I bought used. Only downfall with the newer one was the shelf was to high. So I did a “Fred Bear” modification. I have noticed the newest SK’s have grips more like the 72 SK I own. I have shot a few of the Martin bows, old and new and performance wise it’s a toss up for me. I know guys who will argue that with me but that’s my experience.

I've owned both, still have the Howatt Hunter. Just personal preference.

What's your draw length?

I’m gonna bet that Viper will recommend the Howatt if the OP has a longer DL, but mine is 27” - 27 1/2” and the 62” length has never troubled me in the slightest. Not in a treestand, not on the ground, not kneeling ... Not at all. And I’m pretty damn short.

The only “Bear” I’ve ever shot is one of Nemah’s excellent reproduction of an early ‘60s Kodiak Deluxe at 60”, so I can’t compare the two. I can just tell you that I’ve been shooting the same #55 Hunter for over half of my lifetime now with nary a complaint against it.

I don’t know about current production “Martin” bows; not sure the jury has come back on them yet. But target bows are longer than hunting bows for good reason, and most of the Bear bows are just too short to look inviting to me.

Best bet is to shoot both; chances are real good that you can’t go wrong with either, but hey... Blonde, Brunette or Redhead? Ford, Chevy or Dodge? Martin or Bear? You’ll just have to decide for yourself..

28". Does draw length make a difference with one of them?

28 inch draw you will be fine with either of them. My draw is little over 29 inch and I have no trouble with either. It will come down to which one you like best. Both good bows.

I have had both, only have a Hunter now and slightly prefer it. But, if I only had the Super k, I would be fine with that too. 2 of my favorite bows, matter of fact, the only bow I have shot that I might take over one of them is a Bob lee.

Both great bows and both are no longer the same overall quality as in years gone by.

Martin Hunter by light years. Better designed bow from the ground up. The Hunter has solid laminations down the back adding a huge degreee of stiffness, theregore performance to the bow. The laminatins themselves are better designed. The lesser degree of reflex akes the bow better.

Yes, at 28", either will be fine. The Hunter can start stacking around 29", and the Bear might give you a little more draw length. TYPICALLY the 64" Bear will be smoother on the draw (the 60" isn't terrible either), while the Hunter might be a bit quicker. I like the grip on the Bear a little better, but that's a personal call.

Viper out.

I have both of them and they are both great bows.I tend to favor my Hunter's a bit more,I like the lower grip they have and they way they shoot. They are a 1998 and 2008 Hunter's,so they are FF capable which are the type of strings I prefer to shoot. My Super Kodiak is a 1971,a classic bow and just love the looks of it.It shoots just great. My buddy had a newer Super Kodiak grayling green,I loved it and they way it shot.Would loved to one day get one of the new Super Kodiak Black Beauty, that is a beautiful bow in my opinion.

Both great bows.

Can't choose between them.
