It's been awhile since I've built some wooden arrows... The only finish I've ever used has been gasket lacquer... Never had a single issue with it on cedar shafts. Douglas Fir is a different story... it's like the lacquer goes on parts of the shaft but not the others... any advice as to what it could be? The lacquer is around 2 or so years old... Thanks and I hope everyone is having a wonderful day!

Hopefully you can see in the below pics that the lacquer took and is shiny on some parts and then it's like it has nothing on it...

Sometimes it will get thick while setting for long periods and needs to be thinned. Acetone will thin it, I like mine pretty thin and dip them 2 times. You may try wiping the arrow off with a acetone soaked rag also.

Ok. Thanks

DF sometimes just soaks up lacquer and needs more to stay on the surface.

If you do need to thin lacquer, the obvious substance is lacquer thinner. (I'm thinking you don't need to thin it, which might make the problem more severe.)

Rusty like you, I have had great luck with gasket lacquer. I use it on both douglas fir and cedar without any problems unless the gasket is worn out. I think I would thin it a little with acetone and try again.

Looks like it just needs more coats.

I've thinned it a little to much and the easy solution on Doug fir was just to dip them twice more over my normal three or four dips. They look great and wear well and it only took a few additional minutes. Mine looked just like yours before a couple more dips.

Switch to min wax poly, it is fail safe. I got tired of so many gasket lacquer problems.

I've never had any gasket lacquer problems but you do need to replace your gasket periodically. When they ware out, they will cause the problem you're having.

Watco Danish oil and dunk tanks made from pvc. Submerge a few days, revove, wipe, allow to dry . Easiest thing ever.
