Well folks, I'm back shooting! This year, I'll take my 4th deer in the last 4 seasons. Why the confidence? Well, I'm a mighty hunter before the Lord! Anyway, for the last month, I've been observing with my scope instead of shooting my bow, as I had sore shoulders from shoveling this winter and spring. Even after a layoff, my shoulders were so sore, I couldn't get my 30 pound Hoyt quite to full draw for my first shot. I kept at it, and pretty soon I was laying them right in there without shoulder pain. I'll shoot nightly now, for two weeks, and then I'll go to 45 pounds and finally to the Bear TD at 47 pounds. I had no trouble with holding at full draw and even made that promise I mentioned before, this time that I'd hold for 7 seconds, and I did it. The Lord is slow to anger and quick to forgive, but you never know, lol! Anyway, it worked again.

Sounds like you are well on your way my friend!!! I know how hard health issues can effect shooting and how amazing it is when you get healthy again! I dealt with a broken hand all winter and when it healed it was like meeting that old friend against for the first time in years!

If you were shooting a Widow instead of that Bear, you'd already be in the chips!

Well, I guess the Mouthy Minnesota Munchkin has finally got his eye plucked away from the telescope. You know, it’s really sad when your goal in life is to be able to shoot a junky, mechanical, inefficient , rattle trap 47# non trad bow. Good grief...

To think it all started with this cover photo of C.R. Learn and a longing for that A handle TD he was carrying. I've come full circle!

I miss C.R. Learn and his contributions to the magazine. Back when people actually did 'how-to' in the field, and bow 'field tests'. The old Bow and Arrow Magazine was well balanced in all facets of archery. The mag risers are great bows as well.

Better start squirting some oil on that squeaky stool of yours. Give it time to soak in. .nothing wrong with being confident in your ability.

From: RymanCat

With gas going up Joe If I had to be you I would line the deer up standing along road then drive over as many as I could at one drive over.

What say you guys? LOL

Why would you want to hold a bow back for 7 seconds? That is a good way to aggravate your shoulder injury. The full moon is messing up viewing this week, along with the heat, Tstorms and humidity, but Scorpio will be in a timely early evening position when the moon gets out of the way. If you are up late enough, mars is showing itself. Of course, if you need to get bed earlier, Jupiter is still good.

From: Frisky
Date: 29-May-18

I only held the bow back for 7 seconds to prove to myself all evidence of snap-shooting is gone. Now I can return to my regular shooting. Right now, I'm practicing form at 10 and 15 yards. Form came back fast last night.

I've been observing and sketching the moon and Jupiter. All of my favorite globs are washed out by moonlight, as is the Ring Nebula. M4 is also hidden, but as soon as the moon is back on the wane, I'll be adding M4 to my glob list. So far, I've found M5, M10, M12 and M14. saw Saturn's Cassini Division too! Clear as a photo.

I was amused of spying on my neighbor by her sister. I said,'with that scope at this range anyone would be upside, backwards and fuzzy' She said, "Yep, that's her.'

From: Frisky
Date: 29-May-18

LOL! I told the next door neighbors I wouldn't be spying on them, as my scope focuses from 50 yards out.

Do you ever have trouble finding Uranus?

Now we're getting like YouTube trolls. A sad situation indeed!

Welcome to the new star gazers forum. Our resident expert is the marvelous Minnesota moon watching moron. Equipped with a new take-down telescope that is gazer friendly and very easy on sore shoulders, he will be keeping us amazed with his reports of our vast universe. I would probably rather play with a telescope than shoot that worthless new loser TD bow.

Joe fly me out and put me up for a week but keep them Cats away from me you could end up with less around . Anyways feed steak and Lobsta and I will educate you on the finer acts of a killer.

You will get your deer but you drag it out not me. I will teach you as much as I can fit in while I am with ya.LOL

Hec's hoping I am good enough by then but if not then we can still run over a deer and I turn away. Its your deductible at the body shop anyways. LOL

I will help you with the deductible and talk to shop owner to save it just because you gave the body shop a job.LOL

Frisky ,the master , snap shooting? Say it isn’t so. Stick to Michelin ‘s. Easier on your shoulder

It's best to get all the jealousy out of the way early, as I'll soon be getting my deer hide, and I plan to post a photo.

Joe

From: Brad Lehmann
Date: 30-May-18

Frisky-it is so dry here that the deer are coming to the roads in droves. So many are getting hit by cars that you shouldn't need that bow at all. You can have your choice of whitetail or axis but you have to get 'em quick as they spoil fast on the hot asphalt.

From: 4nolz@work

If I could only shoot one a year I'd take up golf.We are blessed with liberal bag limits and lots of game.

From: Frisky
Date: 30-May-18

If they allow two deer this season, that'll be 5 in a row! That doesn't count a road kill tag.

Joe

Joe, it's going to take a while after all this time before you won't get the Buick jokes anymore.

Mr. Stout, I am surprised on that comment about Uranus,. it was funny though.

Good for you Joe, keep your head on straight and ignore the peanut gallery.

Now I'm not pushing for you guys to stop making these jokes because they are funny and a laugh is good for your health and by reading these posts, lately we all can use some help.

Just one buck a year in Pa. Always been that way. A doe with a permit based on allotments per WMA. Most people only get one permit except for far eastern and far western Pa.

From: Frisky
Date: 30-May-18

Yep George, one deer a year hunters tend to be superior hunters. We don't get many chances.

Ron- George is jealous he doesn't have a nice Meade LX70 R5 refractor to view the heavens with! Bowhunters of old were in tune with the night sky. You have Orion, the great hunter, and also Sagittarius, hunting the scorpion in the southern sky. A true bowhunter gets in touch with the night. That's why only a few emerge as legends.

Joe

From: dean
Date: 30-May-18

I stayed focused on one very large 12 pointer last. I did not get him, nor did I take a road trip to any of the doe tag counties to get my extra deer. This coming year i am not going to pass on any buck that more than a a yearling 6 pointer like last year, after that it will be road tripping to the extra doe tag counties. I did get a Henry 45-70 single shot for late gun season to get more deer in the freezer for this coming season.

From: Frisky
Date: 30-May-18

Here, the gun hunters have to use shotguns. You'd think they'd allow guns in calibers like the 45-70 and 30-30. Of course, I just need an old red osier arrow to get the job done. Real hunters can do that.

Joe

From: Babysaph Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member

Wish ours was one buck a year. Me and my family and my patients eat a lot of deer meat so one wouldn't do me. Besides I only eat the tenderloin.

From: 4nolz@work
Date: 30-May-18

Dean you can use that rifle during shotgun 1 or 2 now

From: dean
Date: 30-May-18

I know, but the first season is short and a bad weather system make it tough on us old farts. The second season is longer and usually there is no one out there during the second season. I have never shot at a deer with a gun, this will be a new experience for me, I know I am not as manly as I use to be, but i could still snapshot Sir Frisksalot under the Grand Table of Embarrassment any time I want to.

From: RymanCat
Date: 30-May-18

We who are killers salute you Joe boy for at least trying to get another deer. LOL

I'm going to get a permit that I can shoot from my truck.LOL

I been qualifying for a lot of things never thought possible I been learning about. LOL

I think I might have to reside to a gun also maybe?

I now have the disabled card.

From: Frisky
Date: 30-May-18

Ryman- Both you and Dean never really were hunters to begin with. I suggest you both resort to the tools of the devil and leave the real hunting to us purists.

Joe

From: Longtrad
Date: 30-May-18

Frisky, you should trade in that old junker bear TD and treat yourself to a bear minuteman, which is superior in all ways, plus the riser wont get dinged up as bad going in and out of your car.

My time of hunting and playing is done that's for younger guys. LOL

Now its just killing you have to get to that point Joe don t you.

Hurry up Joe its lonely up here just killing.LOL

Now we have to worry about CWD whats next bird flue? I'll just line up 2 at a time and banggoe.LOL

Its ok being a purist when young but when you get older its like is it over yet.LOL

Worn out but not out yet at least I tink.LOL

I just waved to 3 does on my lawn couple days ago at 7:30 am going into their beds after eating honey suckle. I thought ok gots to get better and bushs trimmed up the snow knocked my bush down this winter. Get my mineral blocks out and perking and cameras up to see whos in dodge. I have a 3 way trail behind my fence thats death row. Maybe I should fly you out so you can get your deer if ya can't get her done at your bush.LOL

It all sounds good don't it? LOL

One never knows what tomorrow brings a man these days.LOL

From: Frisky
Date: 30-May-18

I don't need salt blocks and food plots and leases to get my 4th straight! AND remember, I hunt warier deer than in any other place on the globe.

Joe

From: dean
Date: 30-May-18

Oh yea, my telescope is bigger than your telescope.

From: Frisky
Date: 31-May-18

However, my scope has the best optics!

Joe

From: dean
Date: 31-May-18

No, not really, I have the same mirrors as an Obsessions. I wish I that I had a 20" Obsession, but I may have to settle for the 16" Orion.

From: Frisky
Date: 31-May-18

Just get a 16" Meade Lightbridge and be done with it.

Joe

From: dean
Date: 31-May-18

I played with one of those, I did not like it. The Orion is stiffer and has lots of features that can be gotten on the Obsessions, but at a cheaper over all cost. I keep the archery simple, but the eyes and back ain't what they use to be. It is is easier to share a scope that has tracking capabilities with other people. I am pretty good at star walking, but a basic dob at high power is pretty much a one man's hands on game. I predict when that moon thing goes away we are going have a wonderful drought with no clouds and no annoying stratifications in high atmosphere and low dew points so things won't get all wet. I don't have any anti dew heaters on my scope.

From: Frisky
Date: 31-May-18

I too am awaiting the exit of the moon. Who needs a stupid moon lighting things up?

Back to archery- Didn't shoot tonight, as I'm a little sore. However, tomorrow night will be archery night for me.

Frisky, is MT Quiver still around? Wish he would chime in and tell us what is really going on in Austin.

From: RymanCat
Date: 31-May-18

Joe do you tell the deer that you are the Legend so stand still. You know while I run over you or hopefully have enough time since I hold so long.LOL

I think you are confused with holding and playing with it now. LOL

From: Frisky
Date: 31-May-18

LA- MT took off with a bow-shooting lady friend and hasn't been seen or heard from since. Sickening if you ask me. I think he's trying to get out of deer dragging duty for this season.

As for the rest of you- No comment!

Joe

From: Lost arrow

The Minnesota jumping bean. Jump away from the telescope to the new TD and try again to get the limbs on. No, so back to the scope. Hmmm, ant seen that star before. Man, wish that bottom limb would fit. Dang it... I’m going to shoot my good bow. Oh, now my shoulders hurt. Think I’ll look through scope some more. Wait till I tell the guys on the LW what I just saw. Wish I could get that bloomin limb on. Oh well, not going to fit. I’ll ponder on it while I look at the stars .

From: dean
Date: 31-May-18

Where does one need to go cruisin' for babes to find ones that shoot bow and arrow? Or does one just need to keep circling the Hormel plant?

From: RymanCat
Date: 31-May-18

Now Joe if you can't take the heat stay out of the woods man. Stay in truck with AC I am. That's one good thing now I can get a permit to shoot from Truck.

I'm going to saw down couple trees leave in back sit on back gate and that's my blind.LOL

Don't be upset with him because he might? Have a woman now and you don't.LOL

Plus I guess you can always go back to Cat lady Joe and she can serve you tuna casoral which is probably Cat food anyways.

You Cat nipped up you can't find your arrows.

Reason why I say arrows didn't you have that last one you say you shot have a couple holes in it like Swiss cheese? LOL

From: RonG
Date: 31-May-18

Now since guns are being mentioned, I am building a Pennsylvania flintlock longrifle, I used to have a Hawken 50 cal. flint that I hunted with, but it wasn't reliable enough.

Since then I have made a kit and now this one from scratch, even assembling my own lock.

In Florida this will get you into another chance at a deer.

I hope I have the strength to hold it up to aim.

Frisky, I know what you mean, I can tell you what time it is within ten minutes by using the sun, the night time is a little different, but at night I don't get lost.

You can use signs around you to tell what direction you are going, like the MacDonald sign and Mobil oil sign........Ha!Ha!

Makin a funny.

From: dean
Date: 31-May-18

The reason that they can only shoot one deer around Austin is because Joe shot them all. They have a star party out that way, which i find hard to understand, with all of the lit up billboards along the highway the area is lit up like Las Vegas. Joe needs to move south to the Promise Land so he can shoot more deer every year.

From: Frisky
Date: 31-May-18

Don't laugh. I've gotten temporarily turned around in this area at least twice.

Joe

PS- Goose feather molt has begun! I collected 2 feathers. It won't get into full swing until around June 3rd or 4th though.

Joe

From: dean
Date: 31-May-18

You can roll around in cat nip, but don't smoke it man. You'll be climbing the curtains and marking territory. I can just see it, Joe going around the house, psss 'this mine' psss 'this mine too', psss 'all this stuff is mine'. We planted cat nip in the garden one year, our damn cat chased my wife away from it, every time he saw her get close to it. Late at night other cats would fight over it.

From: Frisky
Date: 31-May-18

I'm putting up a catnip video tonight on YouTube.

"Do you ever have trouble finding Uranus?"

Funny. Timeless. How can one not chuckle at that?

From: dean
Date: 01-Jun-18

Uranus is not much to look at through a telescope or binoculars. I have never seen a bow named Uranus, the magician https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FK_QkS6uZeE or Mars, its myth warrants a bow named after it. Mars bringer of war, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0bcRCCg01I
