Damm. What a great guy. He was at our UBM festival couple years back and signed three pics of one above for us then sat with us couple hours. All the greats are starting to leave us. My prayers are with his family
It saddens me to hear this. I owned a shop/lanes in the 60s70s in Illinois & remember this well. On the edge of Peoria, Illinois is where he took the world record & on the ground with his recurve b/4 compounds. Prayers for his family.
Great guy. I remember the first time I met him I had my state record buck at a show and he came up and set down with me asking about my hunt. We talked about 30 minutes and decided to get a snack. I asked him his name and I about fell over when he told me his name. He sure made that 27 year old kid feel great. He was a credit to bowhunting. A good man for sure. Glad I got to spend time with him over the years. We are losing the legends. God bless his family.
I'm very sorry to hear that. My sincere condolences to the family.
I met him for the first time at the Pope & Young convention in St. Louis last year.
It was a quiet hour and I was by myself looking over the big game exhibits. He and a friend that was pushing Mel's wheel chair happened to come up at the same time and Mel struck up a nice conversation with me. I didn't know who he was until I read his name tag. We spoke at length.
For the rest of the convention every time we ran into each other he was very friendly and talkative with me.
...."Babysaph" ... Mel Johnson was a friend. He loved bow hunting and talking to bow hunters. Mel holds The Typical Whitetail Deer World Record (1965) and taken from the ground in Illnois with a left handed Damon Howatt (Martin Archery) recurve and a fiberglass arrow tipped with a Jack Zwickey broad head. Mel gave the bow away and Gail Martin had it and Jack Swickey has the complete arrow that Mel gave him....I myself doubt Mel's World Record will ever be beat! (not with a 'recurve' anyway) .... -}}}}}}}}------------>
I read the story about the buck in outdoor life or north American whitetail can't remember it's one of those stories that I never forgot and I relived it from time to time never met him but man that story and buck will live on forever!
I remember reading the story of Mel's buck shortly after he got it. I later met him at a P&Y Banquet and many times thereafter when he attended the Compton Rendezvous yearly.
My Condolences to the Johnson Family. Mel was a Good Man. He's been a Mentor to me since 1967. I feel fortunate to have had so many conversations with him over the years and call him a friend. I will sure miss our visits at the Compton Rendezvous. Thanks Tony for getting him there. Mel told me if it wasn't for you he would have never been able to get there.
