I keep losing my dang limb protector on my lower limb of my longbow. I buy the rubber one that slips on the limb. Anyone want to share their secret of keeping them on.

I think I had one of those some years ago. I didn't care for it. Fit too lose on the limb.

And I have cut a hole with a hole-puncher in the rubber ones and used it in the same fashion.

What olddogrib said. I believe Black Widow sells a light weight one with a hole in it.

I have a Wes Wallace Royal with antler tips. I use the black plastic tip protector (small). I first cut it down and apply it it fits best sideways. Then I cut a slit to allow string to fit. Only time it comes off is when I remove it. I gave up on tip protectors when I had my straight limbed (Hill style) bow. Tried the leather kind but the hole split from the string angle and it’s somewhere in the CA. foothills.

I have never lost one but usually get or make them to fit. Baby Bottle niples fit quite well on a lot of tips and then if you lose one it would be no big deal anyway.>>>----> Ken

You only need to cover the tip and maybe 3/8th inch for protection. That shouldn't be an issue with the string. I quit using them altogether. Rubber ones create heat and moisture and can cause sweating and damage to the tips more than the occasional bump I give it. I just check them when I come in from hunting and clean any dirt off the lower tip if needed.

George, I agree to disagree. Here in the desert we have gravel and rocks that pass as “dirt”. I don’t intentionally set any of my bows on the ground but it happens. I have a banged up Super Kodiak to show what happens when you miss a step coming off the upper hill range. So I will continue to use them, pain that they can be.

Buy some liquid electrical tape made by Gardner Bender, it is like plasi dip. It is put on with a small brush attached to the cap. It dries like rubber and can be easily peeled off if desired. It works very well on my skinny Uukha limb tips. I think I bought the stuff at ACE hardware.

I make my own out of leather and stitch them with artificial sinew. I leave the tag ends long enough to tie around the string.

M60gunner. Arizona air is dryer than a popcorn fart, so you should be good to go. I still would check them now and then to make sure you aren't having any issues. Ain't that hard to check them. ;)

Like olddogrib; I use a hole puncher, however I punch holes on the side of the tip protector then work it on with the string through it, rather than following the flat side of the rubber tip protector :)

Fully agree with Rusty oldogrib and reb. Blackwidow. Hint, once removed ensure you replace the protector the same way, otherwise you will stretch it. good luck!

No need to spend close to 5 bucks for the black tip protector. I use little plastic screw protectors you can get at most big box hardware stores (Home Depot etc..). They are cheap, fit tight so they stay on and easily removed to check the tip for moisture and are small enough so they don't interfere with the string. You usually can get a little bag of three of them for under a dollar. I have found the 1/2" size fits most lower limb tips and the 3/8" size fits bows with very small tips. Here is a Griffin I used to own that has the 1/2" inch size one on the lower tip. Best of Luck! Steve

I've used the Kwikee and the Saunders bow tip protectors for years and never had a problem. Some of my bows have had the same tip protector on for years. The Saunders would be harder to lose since it has a slot the string goes through.

I use the ones from BW.They come with a hole and I trim them to just meet the string groove. If it's damp or raining I pull it off to dry when I get indoors.

What's the use of antler tips if they are hidden? Like the rubber nose bra on a Porsche that tells the world the driver is a silly, small man.

oh tip protectors? I use the black ones from 3Rivers and they never come off actually....item 4029. I have also used the leather versions, 6211 and 6210 where string goes through hole in protector and they dont come off either. I prefer the rubber black ones for fit and protection...I just remove after hunting in heavy rain or if used my longbow as walking stick crossing some water to steady me.
keep em sharp,

One note of caution. Remove the tip protectors periodically to check the limb tips. I heard of rubbers protectors collecting moisture inside that have caused limb laminations to separate.

I have a leather tip protector for my recurve. I got it to prevent bottom loop from falling off the bow when unstrung and having to retwist the string for desired brace height. Trouble is when I put the bow in the bow sock the protector slips off. A real pain! Rubber is much better but collects moisture..

I used to use the Saunders back in the 60's and 70's. Once I quit hunting from tree stands I just stopped using them and never had a problem with damage. Twice though I dropped my bow while not paying attention when in a tree stand. Luckily both times there was brush to catch it.

I usually use Kwikee tip protectors. However, some limb tips are to small to get a nice snug fit with them. When that's the case, heat shrink works very well also.

Homemade leather have to be sized to fit correctly or can be noisy. I sold a bow and put the leather protector I made for it on a Sage limb tip but didn't shoot it for awhile. When I did I thought something had let go then remembered the protector was new. I now use the plastic one without the hole - guess it is a Kwikee - but find trimming to cover just the tip beyond the string nock works best best for not trapping moisture but still protecting the most vulnerable portion with a tight fit.

Make ur own out of thin leather. It's there to protect the limb tip when you're stringing the bow the way a man does (step thru) and to protect it when ur using the bow briefly to get up when ur down.
If ur using a bow stringer for ur longbow u are missing the point.

When you guys use the plastic handle dip do you have to do anything special to the tips before you dip them?
Also, when you peel it off has it had any effect on the finish or anything?
