What would be a good setup up for a 40lb longbow (reflex deflex)
Center cut riser 175 grain tip shooing split finger release at 28.5?
Just wondering what a good starting point would be

With 175 grains tip plus insert I would start with 500 spine or 35-55. Start full length and cut as needed. Just watch what the shaft manufacturer calls 500 spine. I ran into this with Victory shafts. To them 500 spine is 30-50. Gold Tip used to say 35-55 is 500 spine. I know some folks use 600 spine for specs you wrote but with 175 gr. points even cut to say 29” you might show a weak bareshaft. Maybe get a couple of each from Lancaster a try.

Its hard to guestimate arriw with a predetermined tip weight. When i shot a 40lb cut to center lb i was shooting full length gt600 with 125 gr tips. I guess you could trim the shaft lil by lil untill you hit your desired tip weight. Most folks tune the arrow to the bow, which tip weight ends up being a result, not always whats desired.

700 spine at 30" and about 125/145 tips. With a quality low stretch you may be able to use a 600 spine at that length with about the same weight or a little heavier.

The 28.5" , is that your draw length? If so you are pulling a little more than 40#. And you will probably want 29.5" min on the arrow length. On similar recurves I use 30" 600's but with only 125-145 gr points. So if you really want 175 gr points may need a 500 spine.

500 will be too stiff even at 30 inches...even with 175. This is a longbow cut at center, which means his arrows will be their diameter off center. He needs flex, which carbon resists more than any other shaft. A 500 would work maybe at 32" and 200 up front. A 600 with 175 and 30" may be flexible enough, but may still take a little more tip weight.

Agree with George, I went this route about three weeks ago. .600 spine full length with 175 up front. I split a rawhide lace to half the thickness and placed it behind the strike plate to give me a little more adjustment.

I had a bow at the exact specs u are talking about. 40@ 28" and I drew 28.5. 600 spine at 30" long with 175g tip is exactly what I settled on.

If you're shooting black eagle 34" shafts, 500, but otherwise, 600. Another thing you can do is to foot your arrow for a couple inches, this will shorten your arrow in effect and increase the dynamic spine a little bit.

I shoot 600's and draw 29.5. However you could use 700's and go with a lighter point and be as fast as the big boys. If you are sold on 175 points 600's might work fine if your bow is pretty quick. good luck >>>----> Ken

I shoot full length .600 spine Gold Tips with 225 grains up front out of my 40# Bear Montana. I only draw 27”...so you should be able to come on down towards your 175 for point weight and get them to fly pretty good with your draw length.

.500s will be too stiff. .600s may work, but i believe you'll find .700s to give you a bit of room for tuning and work great for you. I see too many guys shooting arrows that are too stiff for their bows. In .700 i like the heritage 75s I'd like to try the axis .700s someday. Best of luck!

Shoot 145 grain heads with screw in insert you still have 165 grains up front. With that, gold tip traditional 600 spine full length will net 400 grain arrow. They are fast and fly like darts out of a tuned 40# bow like yours. I shot that arrow combination through a nice buck with my 40# recurve at 21 yards last year. I draw only 40#.

I shoot full length Easton epic 600s out of my 40# Darton recurve. I am shooting 200 up front, but have shot between 180-220 and they still shoot good. My draw is 28”

With one of my bows I shoot 28.5" 600 spine carbons from a ~41# at my 26" draw r/d with 175gn heads and they shoot very well for me. Since you draw longer and your arrows are likely to be longer you may or may not need 500 spines which is what I use on my heavier bows in the 50-55 range.

I have 26" draw.i am currently shooting a 64"straight limb longbow 38-40# @ my draw. 29" gt blems.600 with 175 tips fly great. with 145 tips slightly stiff but much flatter trajectory past 20 yds. I'm thinking about trying some .700 cut to 28" with 125-145 gr points just to see how they do. But I think the .600 with 175 will be my hunting setup. Hope this helps you

At 28.5" to the back of the point .700's or .800's are the proper spine.
.700 is 45lb. AMO spine. ,800 is 38lb. AMO spine.

Half the team is advocating stiffies, the other half wet noodles, the silent majority is scratching their chins. All I know is that 175 gr plus a standard 25-30 gr insert up front of a 30"+ shaft is a lot of payload for a 40# bow. You'll be at or close to 11 GPP, so nothing smoking off the line.

lots of ways to skin a cat
think about this
a 31" 500 shaft with 175 grain point has nearly the same dynamic spine as a 31" 600 spine with a 125 grain point.

You don't know anything would be to stiff till you shoot the arrow. The scales are BS and fake news.
All arrow combos need to be tested to verify you just can't swing on theory!

600s as long as they are 30.5” long should get it with a 175 head. If by chance you have a really slow string with 10lbs of poof balls hanging off it you might be a tad stiff.
