Can you guys give some pointers on how to line up a fletching jig so that the feathers sit flat? I always end up with the tail of the feather rolling up off the arrow. thanks

You have to adjust the jig, how will depend on the make of jig. But basically place a feather in the clamp set it on the jig and adjust it until the feather quill lays flat, with alittle offset at the leading edge.

Just do a dry run or two while adjusting the fletcher. It's really pretty straight forward.

Pay attention to edge of quill when setting offset. Do a dryrun first to get edge where you have no overhang. When you put your feather in clamp leave about 1/8" sticking out the bottom the full length. Sit clamp down on arrow at nock end the tilt forward and push down. I hold mine up to light and if i see any gaps i push the feather down with a knife blade. For stubborn areas just slide the tip of a toothpick between the quill and the clamp and leave until glue sets up. Don't be in a hurry for glue to dry. Good luck.

Make sure you don't push the quil up against the clamp

I also sand the quill down so it has a thinner base. Lays and looks better. I do this after I put the feather in the clamp. Takes seconds and makes for a better look.

If you can get both the front and back end of the quills to align with the very center of the shaft, you will have feathers that sit flat. This is true for straight, left and right clamps. A Bitzenberger Jig with its Allen wrench micro adjustment capability makes that process quite easy. Read the directions or download them and you will find it a very easy process.

The Bitzenburger is probably the most adjustable fletching jig there is. Like everybody else said...take some time to adjust and check before adding glue. Just like a good carpenter .. "measure twice, cut once"
