I'm looking seriously at a Schafer one piece. How many here have one or at least shot one. I know that I need to try myself, and I intend to. Looking for opinions on this bow. Both likes and dislikes if any. Thanks. Arrowflinger.....

I have a three piece and it's amazing. The draw is unbelievably smooth. Very accurate. I am also thinking about a one piece. I'm sure the quality will be top notch. I can't say enough about how happy I am with my takedown.

Iv'e had several one pieces and Dave's takedowns. I preferred the one piece. Smooth drawing and shot great.

As long as the grip suits you, there's not anything bad to say about them. If the grip doesn't suit you....you'll have nothing good to say about them.

The limb design is from the Deathmaster.

I have a one piece and love it. I just sold my three piece and will hold onto the one piece. I think the one piece may be a bit smoother and in reality I don't need a takedown.

I have a couple takedowns and a one-piece. The takedowns are a tad heavier in the hand and the option of multiple limbs is a plus. That being said, I get the impression the one-piece has a slight edge in performance. I am not a chrono guy, but that is my perception after shooting thousands of arrows through both.

I have a original Paul built 1982 1 piece 60 inch 69#' Silvertip, it is by far my quickest recurve , but it does take some getting use to. but would never part with it.

x2 Old Shortstop... I also own both TD's and 1 pieces by Dave and agree totally with his assessment. You won't be disappointed with a Silvtertip 1pc... they are as good of performers as they are nice to look at. Plus, you won't find nicer folks to deal with than Dave & Beth Windauer.

Is the FF worth the upgrade?

When you open Schafers web site that is my bow laying on workbench with whiskey box. Shooting machine, I also have a 3 piece takedown.

That's definitely a nice bow Jack, definitely an attention getter, mine is a little farther back in the take down section, Rosewood Dymondwood Macassar flare with Compass inlay.

That's probably a personal preference, but for only $70 upgrade I don't know why you wouldn't do it as it allows you to shoot either FF or Dacron without any worries.

As far as performance, I prefer fast flight and see a significant speed difference on my Silvertips with FF. BTW, I shoot FF on all my Silvertips regardless of whether they were built FF compatible or not... never had a problem but also use well constructed strings with padded loops.

You won't be disappointed with a one piece!

The Schafer one piece is one of the few you rarely if ever see on the Classifieds.

Put your order in to get on Dave's build list, then you'll have 10-12 months to decide on wood combinations!

I am fortunate to own both 1pc and 3pc recurves made by Dave. The 1pc is 60" & 62#. I also have a 62" 64# 3pc.

The grip is a bit shorter on the 1PC and it is physically lighter than the heavier 3PC yet performs similarly.

As said before, you will be disappointed about nothing when working with Beth and Dave on a bow.

The one piece I own is one of a pair I purchased as a graduation gift for my oldest son. The bows are pictured on the website.

No dislikes from anyone they are the best available, buy one.

I've shot the one piece, and I own the takedown, and if I didn't travel and fly (sometimes in very small planes) to hunt then I would own the one piece.

Great looking bows with many accolades from those who own and shoot them. What numbers would one expect with a 55l lb one piece at 28" draw, with a 10 grain per pound arrow and 160 grain broad head? Any independent tests done in the past that are available. I hope to shoot one sone day, but don't see them often in my neck of the woods. Thanks! TLM

I have had the pleasure of owning and shooting a number of 1 piece Silvertips. I found them a joy to shoot. I preferred the 58" over the 60" version. Incredibly quick, very accurate and silent on release. The draw weight always felt about 5# heavier than stated to me anyway. I do not have one currently but it will be the next bow I order new from Dave and Beth.

I own 4 originals and 2 of Daves (plus 11 other take down originals and from Dave). My go to is an original one piece original. Lights out shooter and you’ll be pressed to find a better bow (Paul’s or Dave’s) - period.

The Schaffers' I think originally were modeled after the Howatt Hunter. I might be wrong on that but I'll say this the sight windows look like every Hunter sight window I've seen save for being more refined. I do know that the Silver Ghost marketed by Schaffer and sold through Screaming Eagle were made by Howatt. The Good Medicine I own now, the sight window looks pretty near identical to the Schaffer so there must be something said for a classic design that works.

I had one, and like an idiot, sold it. The only bow out of 50 or so I regret.

I would buy any Schafer bow made by either Dave or Paul without even shooting it they are that good. Although we often think a Schafer onepiece is a recurve the fact is Dave is a superior longbow builder. Mine was an oldball 62 inch one. I would have to believe a 64 or 66 inch Schafer longbow would be a great one.

Easykeeper what are the woods in your beautiful bows you posted?

I have and love my 3pc Schafer and will never part with it. Hopefully will have my Custom 1 piece bow with in the next month. I will post pictures when it arrives.

Bryce - The main riser wood in both bows is cocobolo. The curved accent in the TD and the stripe in the one piece riser is figured koa. Both bows have highly figured koa limb veneers and rough sheep horn overlays, horn overlays on the limb tips too.

The koa limb veneers have a very deep and three dimensional look, especially in sunlight. They are by far the prettiest limb veneers on any of the bows I own or have owned.

And of course both have the Silvertip checkered grip.

Both bows are made from the same blocks of cocobolo and koa so in a way they make a matched set.

The one piece is a 60" bow and is 50#@29". The TD is a 62" bow and is 45#@29".

I got one off a trade a few weeks back. I absolutely love it. Enough that it is already back in Daves hands getting checkered having the quickey quiver bushings plugged, and the original owners name taken off!

I too feel that it is harder hitting than the takedown I had in the past and a bit smoother. I have been shooting 3piece bows, or longbows for the past 15 years, and honestly think this may be my go to bow this year.

What dimension are the new one piece recurves cut to center? Is this customizable?

Digging up an old thread here, I was able to get an original one piece Paul made Sivertip, numbered #803. Any way to know how old the bow is.

Give Beth Windauer a call (406-892-0580) or send her an email ([email protected])... she may be able to give you an idea on the year it was built. Paul's serial numbers went to about #2023 until his death in 1993. I have #1704 which Paul built in April of 1990.

Which recurve bow is close to the Shafer the most? Tall Times?
