Two 4'x6' horse stall mat, to make 8'X6' back stop.

before you ask.

YES, I NEED IT!

I am supremely bad shot. :)

all honesty, this allows me to start taking 50yds shots frequently without worrying about losing arrows.

I've overshot my previous back stop of 4' high, and while it happened RARELY, when it did, it was PIA to go look for them in the woods.

also, I wanted to be able to hang a bag target at my eye height... which is about 5ft or so off the ground. having 3 foot of backstop above that, TO ME, is comforting.

...and here's main reason I did this.

someone is gonna come to my house in June to shoot his Japanese YUMI in my back yard.

He isn't greatest of the shooter either, and HIS arrows costs $25!! per arrow.

he shot my arrows few month ago, and lost 4 in 10min... so I wan to make sure that the chance of that happening is going to be lower...

Look's like a good job to me. You can even bring the kids out to fling arrows and not worry about stray ones!

I like it! Peace of mind is great! Plenty of room to play with swinging targets and stuff as well! Job well done!!

Yes I like it. Can you hang the bag from it as well or does the bag have supports? When you get it all set up show us another picture. Thanks, >>>----> Ken

I'm patting myself on the back for putting this together. cause it wasn't easy! -ted

Rooty, is it "netted" back stop (sold as back stop)? or is it something else that you are using as back stop?

I've thought about netted back stop, but it was little too pricy for me.

if you know a good deal, please let me know for future reference.!

Date: 22-Apr-18

Yes its netted. Got it from the manufacture it's a prototype for compound bows. Works great for traditional. It's like chain mal material. He may have a few left. I leave it up year round just waiting for the frost to get out of the ground. Rooty

That's a dandy backstop.

From: GF

If I could shoot 50 or 60 yards without leaving home, you can bet your butt that I would have one just like it!

I was out earlier this evening, lobbying shots from 65 to 80 or so, and I missed PLENTY! It would be a lot nicer to drop those shorts into a stall mat, rather than the dirt. But I work with what I’ve already paid for!

From: ga bowhunter

do the arrow bounce off or stick in? are they hard to pull out? nice job!

From: Dao
Date: 23-Apr-18

Ralph,

stick in or bounce off

it depends on the strength of the bow, and distance.. with that said, there's raised "dimples" on the underside of the mat to keep it aired out (in it's intended use), those area will be thicker, so if arrow hit the thick area, there's better chance of bounce off.

pulling out is easier than hard foam target. at least with me shooting anything from 45 to 66# (these can stick in).

That oughta do it! Nice clean look too.

Very solid backstop.

From: Dao
Date: 23-Apr-18

I took 50yd shots, and wow, the confidence level is waay up.

I have no problem setting my trajectory high, knowing that I won't overshoot my back-stop!

it makes it easier to keep shooting at that distance.

love it so far. -ted

Thank Ted think I'm gonna do the same thing

From: Crash

What did you use for the frame?

From: Dao
Date: 23-Apr-18

hi Jarrod, I used pressurized weather treated pine 2x4.

10ft for sides and 6ft for top. 2ft of vertical sides are burried (leaving 8ft above ground) and it has support extended forward. the frame is also being held by the fence behind it.

everything is held together by the stall mat.

From: Crash

Thanks Ted, that looks nice. Really let you get some interesting shots going without worrying about lost arrows.

From: Dry Bones
Date: 23-Apr-18

Good job Ted. I use one mat at my place, and hung it from the short side at the top. I don't shoot my traditional bows that far, just not my thing. So far 1 mat at 30 and up has worked. Has the red stick made it to you?

Before that I hung a bag target from a hockey net...doesn't everybody?

see, that "net backstop" is the way to go. I know this as I've seen it stop pretty high powered shots at close range...

oh, but the price. :)

I envy you!

...although, horse stall mat does stop broadheads.

anyway, this will be my last photo.

someone asked if there's place for me to hang a bag, and yes there is. there's 2 hooks at the top. I'll hang lightweight bag, just enough to stick the arrow as backstop will do the rest.

Thanks for your kind comments!

The nets come in different ratings. My heavy bows are no match. Sharp Sticks is the manufacturer of mine. The make many versions and some are called the Wall available at 3 rivers. Rooty

From: Dry Bones
Date: 23-Apr-18

Ted, Hope you find as much happiness in yours as I have in mine. I have had lots of bows in my hands in the last few years, but none compare with the Freeman.

BTW, The stall mats do stop MOST broadheads, but not a sure bet, trust me....

Helps build confidence did the same thing myself. Still have a good sized backstop not needed nearly as much as before but nicefor that slip up once in a while.

From: Bryce Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

How did you attach the mat to the wood? Screws with washers 6”apart? Great job! Congratulations

From: Dao
Date: 24-Apr-18

Bryce

just screws. although about 4 inches apart. fully at the top, and 2/3 of the mat for sides. using washer is a better idea.

although since bottom mat lasted few years hanging by thin nylon rope on two places, and had no problem, I'm thinking this will be ok.

From: Dry Bones
Date: 24-Apr-18

Ted, the screws work fine. That's the way I hung mine, and only from one end. The washers are a better idea, since it would take a lot less. There is probably a lot of ways to hang one.

I guess mats are cheap when you look at the price of lost arrows. Good deal.

Great backstop Dao, and should last a long, long time!
